Did you know that greyhounds are the fastest land mammal, right after the cheetah?

Greyhounds can reach a speed of OVER 70km/h within the first 6 strides from standstill.

This ability carries over from their racing days into their retired life. Don't be fooled by your greyhound's couch potato-esque 🥔 demeanor at home - they're still hunters at heart.

Retired racing greyhounds are hyper-aware of their surroundings when out on a walk - and you should be too! 👀 Therefore:

✅ Continuously *scan the environment* for things, your greyhound might be interested in chasing. This may include cats, rabbits, flying plastic bags, and more. Ideally, you spot these triggers before your greyhound does

✅ Use an *appropriate leash, collar, and/or harness*. Never use a flexi/retractable leash for your greyhound as the parts are not designed to withstand sudden high impact. You can hurt your dog, yourself, and passerbys if your dog gets loose

✅ *Read your greyhound's body language*. This will get easier the longer you live with your retired racer. Look at their ears, gate, and breathing to judge whether they're just having a relaxed sniff-around or are ready to take off after something in the next second

The Greyhound
is specially designed for sustained high speed running. While he is going at full tilt the dog's heart rate can rise to 300-360 beats/minute-this means that the greyhound heart can contract and refill with blood five times per second during a race allowing oxygen to be transported at a phenomenal rate to supply the needs of the muscles. His ability to reach top speed quickly is amazing. At maximum acceleration a greyhound can reach a speed of 45 mph (72km/h) within its first 6 strides from a standing start. No other land animal (except the cheetah) has that degree of acceleration.
