the challenges in music are real and we all know them. the bigger challenge is overcoming them anyways!
figure out what tools are important to you and how to use them well. ignore the rest and enjoy your beautiful life!
mindset is everything ✨

some people are gonna hate me for saying this, but it’s NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE to get good services as an independent artist ✨ the truth is that any smart services people are looking for clients with big budgets (avg major label spend breaking an artist is $500k-2m), or they’re unable to offer the level of expertise, care and support that you really need because there just isn’t enough money to pay for the work it takes.
i actually tried to offer affordable services and literally refunded all my clients and closed up shop because it wasn’t sustainable.
but if you learn to do this stuff yourself, you can make TONS OF PROGRESS and get yourself to a place where bigger budgets make sense AND you know whether or not the people you hire are any good.
this is why i began focusing on education. i believe it’s the most scalable way for me to offer my expertise and skills to as many people as affordably as possible. and it’s why a lot of other people are moving in this direction as well.
i believe this is a good thing for everybody!
invest in yourself and your education ✌️

99.9% of musicians can literally ignore “the music industry” altogether ✨ so many people are independent now and we have beautiful micro communities all over the world! each community also has its own economy and you can find ways to make things work if you invest you effort into your own!
turns out the internet is a super tool for leveraging and building these communities, but it’s still not a necessity. many people can thrive solely off real connections and valuable services within their own community.
have a beautiful day ✌️

these are some of my favorite metrics to use when i’m interpreting how a conversion campaign is going ✨ there’s a lot more to it but the key is that you’re trying to identify opportunities for improvement:
1. is the ad performing well?
2. is the landing page performing well?
3. is the song performing well?
4. is the audience right?
once you identify where your bottlenecks are, you know what to focus on improving!

CONSISTENCY IS KING 👑 the thing about algorithmically driven tools like social media and spotify is that they need to know what you’re about in order to know who to show you to! the more obvious you make it for them (and for your audience), the easier it is for you to grow!
obv the ceiling for different projects depends on the zeitgeist, amount of interest, amount of competition, quality of what you’re giving, etc, but you don’t need billions of fans, you just need YOUR fans 👌
try to have fun with it, and if this sort of stuff makes you unhappy, just delete social media and enjoy your life and practice!

hot tip ✨ if you’re trying to figure out what countries to advertise in, check your spotify for artists audience locations and start with your top 20 countries and then whittle it down based on performance!
*group countries together in ad sets based on CPM (cost per 1000 impressions) so your ads get distributed evenly during testing!
have fun!

i just sent an email that opens with a pun… and then follows with another pun ✨ eeeep
marketing is all about experimenting. i think most people are afraid of looking not cool or whatever, but it’s pretty amazing how quickly people forget and how easy it is to learn from trying things and having them not go well.
conversion rate so far is 0 but only 1 unsubscribe. i’ll comment if it changes.
you can’t win every game you play!

influence your Fans Also Like on spotify ✨ so this one’s tricky because there’s a lot going into it, a lot of mystery, and only so much in your control… but let’s do it!
1. understand collaborative filtering! build STRONG associations with artists by choosing artists at your size and in your scene that fit with you musically
2. create playlists with you guys together, make sure they’re good, and promote them!
3. next level is actually playing and collaborating together to strengthen your connection further 👌
remember that there are 11 million artists and 626 million active listeners on spotify so it’s all about STRENGTH OF CONNECTION relative to the strength of other connections. it’s much easier to build strong connections with smaller artists that are stronger than all the other connections with that same artist!!

this is an advanced marketing video on how to maximize your monthly listeners ✨ the key here is strategically running campaigns to get as many songs into the spotify algorithm as possible. here’s some steps:
1. create a playlist of your songs
2. run a conversion campaign on meta to promote the playlist
3. reorder the songs throughout the campaign so as many get to 30 popularity as possible
4. hyper focus ads on specific songs if you need to
5. promote a niche genre playlist to make sure spotify also knows who to show your music to when it hits the algorithm
6. concentrate efforts in a 28-day window since this is mostly how spotify determines popularity
7. use discovery mode in tandem for a longer tail and some extra push
this is good for:
1. if you’re booking a tour
2. if you’re pitching to labels / publishers / etc
3. if you’re a nerd like me just interested in learning how all this works and trying to find fans
4. learning more general data about people who like your music
have fun!

blow up your new releases with meta ads ✨ this is the best way i’ve found to market your own music. the key here is that you have to set these campaigns up correctly (it’s VERY CHALLENGING without guidance) and you have to have enough budget to experiment and figure out what does and doesn’t work (this campaign was 30 USD/day).
there’s a ton of nuance beyond what i can cover in this video, but i highly recommend this if you’re looking for ways to boost listenership and connect with your audience rather than have people passively listen to your music on mediocre playlists
due to overwhelming interest from previous videos, i just launched a course where we cover how to set these up in insane detail — 170 minutes of videos across 19 topics with homework assignments and such. you know where to find it! 🔗

Welcome to Magic Nothing, this is our mission ✨ i make these periodically as we’re continuing to evolve and also because it keeps me focused on what we’re doing beyond the day-to-day.
Why: Traditional music services are not set up to serve the massive influx of new independent musicians.
What: Magic Nothing is an online ecosystem for independent musicians.
How: Education, Access, Resources, Community, Mindset
