“China’s approach to the Balkans is determined by its geostrategic position and its rivalry with the USA. The region is only a part, but a strategically important part, of the Belt and Road project, which is part of a broader Chinese plan to strengthen and project its power within its strategic rivalry with the US. The conflict of the West and East, i.e., a new, multipolar division that became increasingly visible after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, will shape this process and the future actions of China and the USA. In addition to being a gateway to Europe, the Balkans is a politically turbulent and unconsolidated area, which makes it significantly easier for China to expand its soft power” says Marko Babić in the article “Realism and Multipolarity in the XXI Century. Challenges for the Balkans” published in issue No. 3/2024 of scientific quarterly “Studia Europejskie – Studies in European Affairs” (https://journalse.com/).
