A reminder that the “Public Day” for the Animal Behavior Society, Saturday, July 30th, is FREE and online, starting at 8 AM Eastern. The focus is on stress, and the talks look great, including a perspective about stress from Melissa McCue-McGrath you might not have thought about, helping pets cope with stress from Kristina Spaulding, and a veterinarian’s perspective on preventing stress in our pets. And surely you don’t want to miss how to decrease stress in capuchin monkeys! No registration is required—just go to this link for more information about the talks and how to get CEUs for participation.

Don't forget, I am speaking at this year's PPG Geek Week. The time will be 4pm Sydney time, midnight US time, and 5am UK time on Day 4 (17th of November). See the link here for session times: https://petprofessionalguild.com/Geek-Week-Sessions Make sure you double-check your time zones and dates!

My talk skims whimsically over optimism and pessimism in animals, short and long-term emotional states and what influences them and how, and then takes a dizzying dive into avoidance learning and how it impacts emotional state in animals both short and long-term. It's an interesting ride, it'll make you think, and I'm hoping for a lively discussion afterwards.

If you missed it, in our latest podcast, we talk about why training or behaviour modification might not be going according to plan and what to do about it. The live Q&A we have posted here on this page is a chance for everyone to ask us anything at all about this or anything else animal behaviour related.

The doctors discuss reasons why behaviour modification strategies might seem ineffective and what we can do about it. More basic strategies for creating positive behaviour change.Instead of saying - how do I stop my dog from doing something I pref...

A VERY interesting ethical dilemma brought up by this new paper, which showed that chimpanzees preferred artificial nesting materials (shredded newspaper) vs natural ones.

What should we do when zoo animals prefer enrichment that doesn't look natural, or when they show behaviour that isn't natural, but still promotes positive welfare states?

Are their contexts where zoo animal welfare should be compromised to ensure that the public doesn't experience false learning or perceptions?

This is a very relevant (and difficult) discussion as some zoos already prohibit non-natural enrichment items.

Basic strategies for creating positive behaviour change.Instead of saying - how do I stop my dog from doing something I prefer they didn't, first consider how to create an environment - to make the "right" behaviour easy to offer, reliably.
