FT: Club Brugge 1-0 Villa

Farcical goal to concede, but another lethargic & passive display. In an extended rut now over past week or so, poor results but manner of our performances is more concerning. Lacked rhythm, control, quality & intensity. Lot to sort out.

Almost look as though we're playing within ourselves to conserve energy & lost our way with what got us here to an extent & now confidence is dropping. Again, lack of intensity, aggression & losing duels just adds to frustration & is the hardest part to accept.

Without that energy & intensity in our play, feel there's less movement off the ball, no speeding up the tempo of our passing as we move into the final third to shift opposition around & break their shape. Slow and predictable, & leads to lack of quality & mistakes. Was expecting a reaction tonight, have to show more on Saturday. UTV.

Reintegrating Boubacar Kamara now a crucial task for Unai Emery.

The Frenchman's ability to pair shielding the backline with his tactical intelligence, awareness & positioning with his technical quality & composure in possession will make a key difference.

Villa have been excellent defensively in the Champions League, but having conceded 15 goals in 10 Premier League games so far, not sustainable if we want to climb higher. Kamara will have a fundamental role to play in that.

With Matty Cash picking up a calf problem having been forced off in 2nd half yesterday, it likely won't happen, but really hope we stop bringing in Diego Carlos and therefore have to shift Ezri Konsa across to RB.

It has worked brilliantly at times, but more often it looks a vulnerability and can have a negative impact on our play in possession.

Kosta Nedeljkovic is still inexperienced, but for the sake of balance in the side, we surely have to try it & give him chances to mature and develop. Think he's done well when he has featured, need to find out if he's a viable solution.

"When you're losing you have to try & get one step forward to try & change result. We know how difficult it is vs Tottenham. 4-1 is a tough result.

"We started the match like we were planning. At HT, plan was to try to keep it. We accepted the result.

"We have to try to be consistent. We had our chances in our transition & set-pieces. But they were clinical today."

FT: Villa 1-2 Palace

Bitterly disappointing as our Carabao Cup run comes to an end. Didn't do anywhere near enough in 2nd half to grab control of game & build on strong finish to 1st. Priorities lie elsewhere but with our depth/desire for silverware, expected more.

Major positives seeing Tyrone Mings & Boubacar Kamara back, crucial for them to get back up to speed & go on to make a key contribution this season. That could prove to be bigger than this result, but similarly to last season, so disappointing to go out early again.

Not a criticism, more so just an area for improvement still. Morgan Rogers & Jacob Ramsey have been brilliant so far this season, really positive signs from the pair. However, next step is being more clinical & consistent in front of goal. Consistently threatening. create openings and critical to us playing with rhythm and fluidity, but they'll be a key part in us becoming more ruthless.

🗣 Unai Emery: "We played a fantastic match, against this team was very difficult. We imposed our ideas. We created chances to scored in the first half, we had one goal which was not because the ball was out.

"We improved even in the second half and for 35 minutes we played fantastic. We created chances, we stopped them, and we scored the goal. But we knew before how we needed to be always ready for everything, because they are a team who are always going forward when they get the ball.

"At the last moment we didn't control the match. For the last 10 minutes we didn't control. Of course we deserved to win, but we have to accept it. It's painful but we have to accept it.

"We are being very demanding and we want to be in the top position in the league. But we have to accept that we are continuing. We are having a fantastic start in the league and Champions League and we are of course frustrated because we want to win."

On Villa's disallowed goal: "VAR is clear, of course. If VAR is telling us no goal it's clear. For me the referee was fantastic today. It was not a goal because it was out, through VAR."
