What are your main priorities in life? What do you really value?

When you are 90 years old and looking back on your life, what do you want to remember?

If you had to make a list of these things, what would be on that list?

This week on the podcast, I’m sharing one of my MVP episodes, “Top 5 Things in Life,” where I am walking you through one of the most powerful exercises you can do for yourself.

After a recent loss in my family, I’ve been thinking about the important things in life, and this episode seemed poignant to share again.💜

🎧So grab a pen and paper and go listen to episode 215, “MVP Episode [Top 5 Things in Life]”!

We are going to change it, one doc at a time.

One doc at a time, gaining the awareness of how medicine conditioned them to think in a way that is harmful.

And then that doc choosing to stand up and say “I’m not ok with this.”

Because we deserve better.

Sunday Scaries Suck.

I know a lot of us physicians struggle with this increased anxiety the night before the work week, or the night before call.

Sunday Scaries are a result of our primitive brains telling us that we need to be worried about the next day in order to protect us.

(Thanks brain....but not helpful.🙄)

But here’s what I tell all my clients who experience this:

The first step to getting rid of these Sunday Scaries is identifying the thoughts you have about the upcoming day.

Because our thoughts are what is causing this feeling of anxiety or restlessness.

And then we eat or drink too much, try to zone out with Netflix or scrolling our phones, don’t sleep, and don’t enjoy our downtime.

Then, the next day, we feel like crap and the day does suck.

So start looking at what thoughts you are having on Sunday nights. It might be as simple as “I don’t want to go to work” or “I hate Mondays.”

Or it might be something like “I might not be able to handle what comes in.”

These are the thoughts causing all that dread and anxiety, ruining the last few hours of your weekend.

And then remind yourself that most of the time, nothing bad happens on a Monday. You’ve made it through all the Mondays up to this point. Because you are a badass doc and you’ve got this.

Is your brain losing its s**t this week?

Here in the US in the aftermath of the election, many of us are afraid.
Many of us are angry and shocked.
Many of us are grieving.

And it can be very tempting to shove all those feelings down and avoid them. Or live in the anger and overwhelm of it all.

But in times like this, when your brain is panicking and convinced that it knows exactly what’s going to happen next, managing our minds is crucial.

In episode 214 of The Happy Gynecologist Podcast, I’m sharing some practical advice on how to manage the anxiety you might be experiencing right now.

You are doing your best, and the only one that thinks that isn’t good enough is YOU.

We criticize ourselves.

We judge ourselves.

Imagine what it would be like to ban the Mean Girl talk.

To not spin out in shame when something goes wrong at work.

To not criticize yourself for not accomplishing everything on your list today.

To not beat yourself up for missing the school play.

Because you don’t have to accomplish anything else to be an amazing Doc, employee, mom or person.

You are doing your best, and the only one that thinks that isn’t good enough is YOU.

You get to decide what enough is.

So decide you are enough, as is.

While you’re at it, ban the Mean Girl talk for good.

Even if things go terribly or there is political violence in our country, we have to carry that quiet confidence that we will figure this out and that we are strong enough to get through it.

So take care of yourself today. Be kind to yourself today.

And if you find yourself feeling anxious and spiraling in the what-if scenarios, take a few deep breaths and remind yourself that no matter what happens, we will figure it out. 🐝

01/11/2024

“Ugh why can’t I be consistent?”

I think all of us have thought this at one time or another (or several dozens of times).

We usually say this while beating ourselves up when we aren’t able to do something perfectly, like keep up with that weekly workout plan, or that commitment to journaling 3x per week you made to yourself.

When we aren’t able to follow that plan perfectly, we make it mean we are failing. We make it mean that it won’t work because we aren’t being consistent.

But I’m challenging you to replace that word consistent with a new one, with something that matters so much more than following your plan perfectly- being PERSISTENT.

Go listen in to episode 212 of The Happy Gynecologist Podcast, where I’m diving into the difference between these two words and why it matters so much in how we take care of ourselves.

Ever notice how it’s easier to focus on what did NOT go perfectly in a shift rather than all the things that went right?

Or how easy it is to be filled with rage when a patient decides to ignore your advice because of a video they saw on TikTok? 🤦‍♀️

This is your brain’s hardwired Survival Mode coming into action.

Go listen in to episode 211 of The Happy Gynecologist Podcast, “Negative Bias Burnout,” where we are diving into the science behind why this happens, and how it relates to burnout.

In this episode, I break down how our primitive brain and prefrontal cortex play a role in how we experience stress and burnout, and why awareness is key.

📝I’m also sharing a free guide in this episode to help you spot where negativity bias might be showing up in your life.

This guide will help you work on those areas and get the most out of what we’re discussing.

You don’t have to earn rest.

Read that again.

If you struggle with feeling like you have to earn your rest or feeling like all tasks come before your own needs, I get it.

I’ve been there too my friend.

We are conditioned to believe that we should spend our time being productive.

So when we finally do rest, it feels uncomfortable. It feels wrong.

And this resistance results in the rest not being so restful…

So next time you hear that little voice saying “I should go do XYZ instead of sitting here,” give yourself permission to rest and not be productive.

After going through an unexpected ocular emergency this past week, I was reminded of just how uncomfortable we can be with discomfort (both physical and emotional).

We live in a society that teaches us to always be happy.

Growing up, we are told to “stop crying, suck it up.”
In residency, we are taught to not show emotion or we will be seen as weak.

But when we avoid any sort of emotional discomfort, it can lead to experiencing a completely different kind of discomfort that comes from not asking for help, not setting boundaries, and not taking care of ourselves.

This week on the podcast, we’re diving into all the ways in which avoiding discomfort can actually lead to more discomfort, and also breaking down how you can become more comfortable with discomfort.

Go listen in to episode 210 of The Happy Gynecologist Podcast, “Becoming Comfortable with Discomfort.”

Burnout comes from chronic, persistent stress that we haven’t dealt with. It’s the chronic stress of:

👉Just “pushing throguh,” thinking “Oh yeah, it’s just a busy week, but I’ve got this.”......But then you turn around and do it again the next week

👉The chronic trauma from activating the massive transfusion protocol or shoulder dystocias that require all the maneuvers.

👉The chronically missed sleep.

👉Not letting ourselves rest or recover once we are home because we are the type of people that get s**t done.

👉Not separating our worth as a human from the RVU or productivity goal we are given.

We go hard. We handle s**t. We lose sleep. We make money. We get s**t done at home.

Lather. Rinse. Repeat

This chronic stress leads to our brains functioning in survival mode, leaving us constantly overwhelmed, pessimistic, and anxious.

Pushing through Burnout doesn’t work because pushing through and ignoring our own needs only adds fuel to the fire.

So what does work? Dealing with the stress. Learning how to take really good care of yourself. Signaling safety to your brain.

Getting out of survival mode is how we overcome burnout.

When the world feels chaotic around us, we can be left feeling downtrodden and worried.

So what do we do then?
We can’t control the world, right?

When the world feels chaotic, let’s take a step back and realize what is going on in our brains.

Then, we can take EXTRA good care of ourselves.

While you and I may not have met, here is what I know about you:

Your job does not define you.

You are so much more than just a compilation of your accomplishments and your career.

Sure, your job is cool, but you are way cooler.

And when the shifts are long and the EBL high, just remember: You are NEVER alone.

Being burnt-out can make you feel like you are the only one struggling.

But I assure you, you are not alone.

I’ve been there, as have many of my clients.

And I have your back.

Because you are a Badass OB/GYN that deserves to put yourself first now.

The heart doesn’t wait to provide for itself until it has taken care of everything else. It doesn’t put itself last on the priority list, it puts itself FIRST.

Taking time to care for yourself is not selfish, it’s essential.

No one questions whether the heart should take what it needs to keep on beating, just as you shouldn’t question whether you deserve the time, rest, and attention you require to continue thriving.

Without you, there is nothing else.

Ever felt that deep, burning anger that you can’t quite put into words?

Like you’re just BIG MAD. 😤

Anger is an emotion we often try to avoid, because we are taught that we shouldn’t be angry, we shouldn’t be mad, and we especially shouldn’t be Big Mad.

In this week’s episode of The Happy Gynecologist, we’re breaking down the truth behind anger.

💥Anger isn’t something to shove aside and ignore, because it is typically an indicator that something is happening on a deeper level:

Like a boundary is being crossed or needs not being met.

Whether it’s at work or at home, your anger is trying to tell you something important.

Go listen in to episode 208, “Big Mad,” on Apple Podcasts or Spotify.

01/10/2024

Hey Doc, I see you avoiding those charts over there….

Ya know, those charts that seem to loom over you like a big dark cloud, a constant reminder of how behind and overwhelmed you are?

Well, I want to let you in on a little secret about those charts: Whether it’s 10 charts or 100, the number of charts you have is neutral.

Not good. Not bad. Just neutral.

One doc might see 100 charts and think, “No big deal,” while another thinks, “I’ll never catch up, I’m failing!” Same number, totally different experience.

Because the stress doesn’t come from the charts themselves; it comes from the story we tell ourselves about them.

👉It’s what we make that number mean that results in our feelings towards them…

Like when we make that number mean that we are failing, never going to catch up, or a bad doctor (which results in more procrastination and avoidance).

The best news is, we get to decide what we make that number mean for ourselves.

You can choose to think, “I’ll get in trouble,” or “I’m so behind, I must be a terrible doctor.”

OR, you can think “Okay, 100 charts. Not ideal, but I’m a badass doc that can handle it.”

Because you ARE a badass, amazing doc no matter the number. 👏

Those charts don’t define you—your brain just thinks they do.

So here’s a loving nudge: put down the phone, set a timer for 30 minutes, and see how many you can tackle. You’ll be amazed how much you can get done when you take the drama out of it.

💪You’ve got this, Doc!

❤️/Amanda
