On Friday, Judge Tarvald Anthony Smith of the 19th JDC's Division A ruled that the redistricting map passed by the EBR school board back in April (SB 22) violated Louisiana law and will not be implemented ahead of the November school board elections.

Instead, as of now, the Ware-Collins 11 member plan will go into effect immediately, unless the school board can re-submit a legal map by Wednesday morning.

Hey everyone,

Thanks for being patient with us during our first year of official operation. We know we haven't published in a while and wanted to give you guys some exciting updates to explain our absence.

Beginning with our next issue, The Bayou Progressive is moving to a topical release model instead of a monthly one. This frees us from the arbitrary deadlines of the calendar and allows us to dedicate complete issues of The Bayou Progressive to deep & multiple-lens perspectives on the important political and government issues in South Louisiana.

Our next issue should really encompass what we mean: we're gonna focus on what's going on with the EBR public school system and whether it's being intentionally set up to fail.

You don't want to miss this one.

These are the two maps the EBR school board was voting between last week.

The first map would keep the board membership at 9 (despite public calls to expand the board) as well as ignore the demographic shifts over the past 10 years that would justify a majority Black school board.

The second map - proposed by board members Evelyn Ware-Jackson & Dawn Chanet Collins, MPA and was the only map with public supporting during Thursday's board meeting - took both into consideration.

The board - voting along racial lines - voted for the first, 9-member map that will reduce the board's Black membership from 4 to 3. https://bayouprogressive.com/2022/04/ebr-school-board-votes-to-advance-blatantly-racist-redistricting-map/
