Rewind to 1981 with Casey Makes a Mixtape!📼
Director Blake Calhoun didn’t just set the film in the 1980s. He wanted it to feel like it was actually made in 1981. Vintage furniture, classic cars, an authentic 1981 jambox, big hair, thrifted outfits, and a whole lot of Farrah Fawcett inspiration all helped build a world that feels straight out of the early Reagan era.
On the tech side, the film was shot on a RED Komodo with extra shots from a Sony a7S III, Blackmagic Pocket 4K, a DJI drone, and an iPhone 15 Pro Max. Using CineMatch and FilmConvert Nitrate, the team matched everything in Premiere Pro, added Kodak 5207 film stock, Super 35 grain, and a touch of halation to give it a warm, analog glow.
The result feels like a lost teen movie from the early 1980s that someone has just dug up and put online. Casey Makes a Mixtape is now streaming on Amazon, Apple TV, Fandango at Home, YouTube Movies, and Google Play.
Blake skillfully uses modern cameras and tools to recreate an authentic 1980s look, pulling you back in time from the very first frame.
