The Evolution of a Floral Artwork

Capturing flowers is easier when you have a couple of end results in mind and also assess your options before taking the photo.

These humble clover flowers, which once graced our garden, are a testament to the boundless creative potential that can be found in the simplest of things.

Capturing flowers in brilliant photos begins with weighing up your options beforehand.

There are ways to capture flowers that offer more editing potential than others.

If you love experimenting with different editing methods, you’ll love the Flower Power workshop programme. It offers not only the knowledge needed to take brilliant flower photos but also the editing techniques and the tools to create artwork with them.

Somewhere in Iowa 🇺🇸

We‘re roadtripping through the US Midwest and loving it.
The Innerstates we’ve been driving along in Iowa were more like country roads, making it easy to turn off and drive down any of the dirt tracks at any time.
Iowa is either totally flat or an expanse of small bumpy hills. There are delights hidden behind every bump, like this beauty here.

This photo belongs to a whole series that I‘m creating for the upcoming workshop: „Landscape Photography“. To be released this month 😍

Do you enjoy landscape photography?

And it's also true in the case of art and photography. The photos you see and you think "I wish I had taken that" are already a part of you. Try to build the ideas you see in these photos into your own. In your own special way.

If you're interested in becoming a brilliant photographer with your own unique style and would possibly like to earn money with photography then you'll be delighted to hear that I'll soon be opening the "Girls with Cameras Photography Academy".

What has become of the common photo? Hast Instagram turned into TikTok?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Congratulations to both of us if you see this photo in your feed 😂
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I've just been scrolling through my Insta feed, something I do a couple of times a day and was shocked by the mass of Reels I encountered.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Is it just me, or did you also sign up to Instagram to see photography? I'd love to learn your opinion about your experience with Instagram. Leave a comment below if you like 😍
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This photo was taken in my brother-in-law's backyard yesterday evening.
The settings:
f1.4
1/400 sek
ISO 320
Camera: Fuji X-S10
Lens: 35mm fixed lens
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
You may ask why the ISO is so high and the shutter speed so fast - well, it's a trick of mine to make sure that I get even more blur than I would if the shutter speed was lower without compensating on the amount of light.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The photo was edited with the preset "Klara" and the Overlay "Morning Glory" from the "Flora Art" Preset Set for Lightroom (coming soon).

May is the most magical month for me. Who cares if it's too cold and that the weather forecast has give 10 days of rain.
When everything turns from brown to lush green then my heart opens with gratitude and I'm over-joyed about the forth-coming abundance of spring and summer days!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This is one sight that I look forward to most. When the yellow Dandelions pale and become gentle and fragile.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When photographing them I like to focus on the "odd-one-out" and love playing around with the aperture.

Now that the second month of 2020 has begun I would love to know what you would like to accomplish as a photographer by the end of the year.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Maybe you'd like to travel somewhere and capture the feeling of that place with your images.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Maybe you'd like to start earning money with your images.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Or even something simple like getting of automatic mode (yes, it really is simple - don't be told otherwise).⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Last year I finally traveled to Japan to do photography. It was a lot different than I expected, especially Tokyo. On the whole not a pretty to look at from above or out of a train window, but each and every square foot excelled in its own beauty. A bustling city with a population of 38 million and still a multitude of little spaces where you can take a deep breath and find peace. This is one of them. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

I took this image a couple of weeks ago on a Sunday. It was the first Sunday in months where I'd taken (more or less) the whole day off. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
(Don't worry, I do have free days off when I'm on holiday and in 2019 I went on holiday quite a lot).⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I thought this would be the start of something new. I just love my work so much that I get really caught up in it and my day always starts either with a coffee and an already open lap top in bed or with a coffee at my desk. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
My brain works best straight after getting up, I just sometimes forget to stop. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The highlight of almost all of my days is when I take my dogs into the woods, but I've told you that already!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Have a great Sunday! What will you be up to? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

You can look forward to my brand new creative photography guide tomorrow. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I'm not sure whether to call it: "The Art of Creative Sight" or "The Art of Creative Vision" - sometimes even the simplest english terms cause me hours of confusion. I don't have an abundance of time today though as all I want to do is continue working on the script, so I'll just explain what the guide will be helping you with and maybe you can help me with the title?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It covers:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
- why you are missing thousands of photography opportunities right outside your door + activities where you learn to find them⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
- why the ideas of photographers with the most experience start to stagnate and how to avoid that happening ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

I live at the edge of a forest and take our dogs, Cooper and Poni for a long walk almost every afternoon. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It's my meditation and exercise. I've been doing this for over a year. We have our own route and the dogs know exactly where we turn in and out of the woods. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Although some of the tracks are a bit muddy or sometimes even icey this is still my favourite time of your to be up there. We spend over an hour outdoors without seeing a single soul. Sometimes a hare or a deer, but usually no one and nothing. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The only sound you can here is our feet rustling through the leaves of the forest and our breathing.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Even though we follow the same route each and every day we notice some slight change every day. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It really is the part of the day which I look forward to the most.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
By the way, I don't always hear the silence as I like to listen to audio books. I prefer them to music nowadays.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Here are a couple of my favourites:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The Sun is also a Star - Nicola Yoon (just finished this)⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Don't You Forget about Me - Mhairi McFarlane⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The Ruth Galloway Series - Elly Griffiths (start with "The Crossing Places")⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The Peacock Emporium - Jojo Moyes⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Little Fires Everywhere - Celeste Ng ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

I love all kinds of blur, whether movement (ICM) or the Monet-Look like here. They're the kind of image which I, personally, tend to look at the longest, whether my mind is full - in that case I feel relief that I don't have to think anything and can just dream or when my mind energised and looking for a task - this is when I start to imagine all the things which are happening in the scene.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This image was taken in NYC with the camera directed at the setting sun on East River. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

There's something about January which I love. It's the beginning of something new. The whole year is laid out in front of us and it's ours to plan and look forward to.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It's a tranquil month which let's our minds breathe after the Christmas chaos. It's an easy month to live in the moment, the past and the future.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I don't know if other people are like me, but each month has its own re-occuring feel. There again, in my world each day of the week and each letter of the alphabet has its own colour ......⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

How do you find January in general?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

This is one of my favourite iPhone photos. I don't think my dslr would have been able to take anything quite as good. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When I want to take a photograph of scenery like this, then I use the light / dark setting on the phone to reduce the exposure slightly. This reduces light glare and adds contrast and brightens the colours.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

25/01/2020

I take a slightly different approach to teaching photography than other photography coaches. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Instead of teaching by genre ie: landscape / portrait / street photography etc. I prefer to teach the absolut basics in the easiest possible way and then delve straight into unusual techniques and images looks. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Each new photographer should have the chance to take any kind of image and as each individual is unique so is their creative journey. I find it restrictive to delve too deep into one particular subject.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I've taken part in many live workshops in the past. I remember a macro course all too well. I came away with a shopping list of equipment which I needed to invest in so that I could take the images demonstrated in the workshop. I didn't want to delve that deep. I didn't want to invest all my money in one area of photography when there were many more interesting areas of photography.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I was sure I wasn't the only one who felt that way and one day I thought I'd better start doing something about it 😉 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

25/01/2020

I love any kind of intentional blur, so you'll be seeing quite a lot of images like this one.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This was taken back in the days when I took part photography excursions. I unfortunately grew out of them and nowadays like to try things out on my own. This is something personal as I'm the kind of person who gets totally distracted by what others are doing and always thinks they're taking images of things far more interesting than I am 😉⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Do you find photography walks inspiring or confusing? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

25/01/2020

I love blur and look for colourful backgrounds which compliment the main subject of the image. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Sometimes the background is even more important than the subject - it really can make or break an image.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This image was taken with a macro lense (Nikon 105mm)⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
How important are backgrounds in your images?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Girls with Cameras, my blog / online workshop business for female photographers, has been alive for quite a few years, however only in the german language.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It seemed like the most obvious decision at the time. I've been living in Germany now since I was 17 and ran my own English school for over a decade. During this time I encountered photography and I've never been as passionate about anything. I taught myself absolutely everything, because there just wasn't anything like Girls with Cameras anywhere.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I tried. And failed. I watched YouTube videos. Tried more. Failed more. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
And got really angry. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
And one day I finally saw an image in my mind and knew EXACTLY what I need to do in order to make that image happen.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
And I started taking quite good images. And people started noticing (well I was slightly proud and started posting them here there and everywhere).⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Then I started to sell the rights to my images. This was really exciting. Because I like a challenge I chose the most picky (and best paying) agency who only approve 5% of images offered to them.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Within two years I become one of their top 50 photographers.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
During that time people started to ask me about my "secret". ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
And I started to show them. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I organised Photo-Walks in my own town, but noticed that not everyone always had time when I did. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
And so I started creating online courses. Now people buy my courses every day. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
And I love it. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The courses are complete. I have a steady flow of incoming followers every day. And now I'm enjoying myself and communicating with my people.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But it's also time to move on! That's where you come into the scene ;)

This image was taken in Manchester in november and the light really was this golden. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We had just left the Manchester Art Gallery and an image in the foyer caught my eye - a scene in St Peter's Square. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It had a strange combination of blur and sharpness and I wondered if I could create something similar. St Peter's Square was pretty gloomy and grey and I got immediately distracted by the golden light in the distance.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I took dozens of images, but especially liked this one with the oncoming tram in the distance.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If any of you have ever visited Manchester you'll admit that it's a pretty magical city, even without the golden light. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Who is "Girls with Cameras" for exactly?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Possibly someone who:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
- has just purchased camera and hasn’t a clue what to do with it⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
- is possibly quiet by nature and feels intimidated by the tech-nerds⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
- had high hopes when she first bought her camera, but seems to be taking the same kind of images as when she was using her Smartphone⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
- was (or hopefully still is) wanting to use photography as a way to express themselves⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
- wants to escape the noise and stress of every day life⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
- is by nature a visual poet, but has slightly lost her way ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀.... or just a girl with a camera who loves taking pictures!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Do you find yourself in the list? Then don't forget to follow me, because there's going to be a lot going off here soon :)⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

You can do whatever you want with your camera. It's your artists brush.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Unlike drawing or painting photography is for the impatient. Within a millisecond it's possible to create a work of art. However what usually happens, at least at the beginning, is that you take a snap shot. Nothing special. Could have been taken with any camera or by anyone. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
An artist's style is apparent from the beginning. They use their favourite colours and and materials which they find appealing and work them all together. An amateur photographer on the other hand looks for things to photograph which will look good in an image, regardless of whether they find the subject appealing. Quite often they try too many things and start to lose their way.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Have you ever taken images which you feel detached from? Which kind of image do you like most? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
