This might be late 🙏 Looking back at my goals for 2023, I never would have imagined that last year would have been such a whirlwind. It's been a rollercoaster ride of career successes, relationship growth, and even quitting my job to prioritize my well-being. There were moments when I felt like I was just floating, unable to process everything happening at once. But amidst the highs and lows, I found an abundance of peace - knowing that no matter what, God's love for me remains constant. Last year may have been a wild journey, but it's also made me braver and more grateful than ever. So here's to you, 2023 - thank you for the lessons, the growth, and for reminding me to always trust in His plan 🙏🏼💛

And yes, 2024 has been treating me well 😇

Sleeping Beauty Mountain near Tinglayan in Kalinga province. The mountain is called as such because the silhouette of the northern ridge resembles a sleeping woman. It is usually best viewed from the west near the municipality Tinglayan in the Chico River valley, but it can also be viewed from the east near Tanudan.

There is a folkloric legend regarding the mountain, passed on for several generations. The tale is one of Kalinga’s most loved bedtime stories popularly sang in the native ballad called Ullalim. The tale of two lovers ended by a tribal war has different versions, depending on the tribe where the story originated, the name of the protagonists are different, but with only slight variation in the story. One version of the story is about Lubting and Mawanga; one, about Dinayao and Binsay; and the other, Edonsan and Banna - all ending with the female protagonist resting on Patukan, in despair, after the loss of her loved one.

I told myself that if I ever got my first tattoo, it would be by Apo Whang-od with her signature 3 dot design, which is the only tattoo she does nowadays. Apo Whang-Od is a tattoo artist from the village of Buscalan within Tinglayan, Kalinga, Philippines. She is often described as the "last" and oldest traditional Kalinga Tattooist in the world.

With my friend Ken, we drove from Tabuk, Kalinga, to Buscalan Village at 4:00 am. We basically slept on the way as we had strenuous activities the day before, strolling through Tabuk Village. Thanks to Dave, who drove carefully and safely.

We arrived at almost 7:00 am and were greeted by a local tour guide named Horsan. We hiked for almost 40 minutes; the hike was great, and I loved how steep it was going down and up to Apo Whang-od's house. This will be another adventure I will never forget. At the top, we passed by a souvenir shop and an eatery, where we asked the owner if she could cook something for us. (No food was ready yet, so we had to.) We enjoyed our breakfast with barako coffee. Apo Whang-od was still sleeping, so we had time to enjoy the mountain views and rice terraces while drinking our cup of coffee.

While waiting, our tour guide Horsan got the traditional sharp bamboo stick for Apo Whang-od to use for "pambabatok". We were on our way to her house and were greeted with "Naimbag a bigbigat" by the locals, an Ilocano which means "Good morning"

Seeing the legend in the flesh was one of my bucket list items, and sharing a laugh with her on our first encounter was memorable. As seen in my first photo, I had the privilege of talking to her in my dialect. Unlike the majority of Filipinos, she does not speak Tagalog or English. She only speaks Kalinga, her native language, and Ilocano, a lingua franca of Northern Luzon. She even asked me if Ken is my husband; it seems like the legend has an eye on him. She was famous of touching a man's p***s 😅

Getting the dots took only five minutes to complete and has been described as more painful than the larger pieces done by Whang-Od’s protégés. But what is pain, or the risk of a small infection, when you’ve made it all the way here to see the living legend in flesh?
