My buddy Giancarlo Bertozzi is featured on this podcast. Gian is responsible for luring me from Cali to Jax Beach 🏖️ where I live now. He is also a super regular at DOS (Duval Ocean Swimmers) Duval Ocean Swimmers - DOS, swimming almost every day from Jax Pier. Plus, I’ll be part of his Catalina Channel Crossing Marathon Swim this fall. 23 miles at night from Catalina Island to Los Angeles county. I attempted it a few years ago solo. It is tougher than the English Channel for many. I successfully crossed with Merpeople 🧜‍♂️ 🧜‍♀️ 🧜 double tandem relay as a stand in invited by Katherine Horvath. HOW TO VISIT MAUI WITH RESPECT IN 2023:

• Stay out of any affected areas. Lahaina is off-limits.
• Take a day to volunteer. Ask a concierge or host.
• Be mindful of people’s feelings. We all feel it.
• Consider donating to Maui Humane Society, Maui Strong Fund, Maui Food Bank, Maui Mutal Aid & more.

West Maui is currently closed. Keep an eye out for updates, and things are changing daily.

If you have plans to come in the next few weeks or soon, please postpone your trip. That being said, do not cancel it. Maui businesses will need your support more than ever, and the majority of the island is still great to visit. Priority needs to go to rooms, food, & supplies for the displaced.

DO NOT DRIVE TO LAHAINA! Have respect for the victims and their families. You’re not welcome right now. The only people that should be heading to Lahaina are emergency personnel, organized volunteers, and residents that need to be either reunited with loved ones or checking on their homes/businesses.

AirBnB, VRBO Owner?
• Let your guests change the date for another time. Then use the units to house the displaced temporarily. We still have thousands in shelters… Don’t be greedy. Show that you have Aloha and belong here as business owners!

Have reservations at a large hotel or resort?
• If they aren’t housing the displaced, GIVE THEM HELL! Most of these mega-resorts are owned by giant mainland corporations, and they don’t feel the Aloha quite the same way we do. Let them know their responsibility!

The recipient of the 2019-2020 MSF Service to Marathon Swimming Award, recognizing outstanding contributions to the sport in a non-swimming role, is Phil White. Phil has organized many swims in his home state of Vermont, in Northeast Kingdom, on Lake Memphremagog. He organizes many sporting events including the Dandelion Run (which we learn about how all this madness started in this interview), Kingdom Swim, Vampire Swim, Tour de Kingdom bike race, and my favorite, Memphremagog Winter Swimming Festival held usually in February by cutting out a 25 yard pool with two lanes for a two day swim meet in freezing water, literally freezing!
