Thanks to Katurix - the creator of the one-man undertaking called GALLIC HAMMER, I can enjoy the music from "Echoes Of Ancestral Battles" on both CD and tape. And it's good to have MC format, if only because it contains one more song than the digipak. I won't even mention the fact that the cassette edition is pleasing to the eye and the olfactory receptors. Besides, I have no complaints about the CD edition either. It all looks beautiful and without excessive pomp. I posted the appropriate presentation on a reel with the ceremonial unsealing from the foil a few days ago, so you can judge for yourself.
The EP presented here is the publishing debut of GALLIC HAMMER, although from what I read in one of the interviews, this solo project had been active since 2019 under the name TALES OF INVASIONS and left behind demo material. From this, as I will call it, legendary demo, two tracks were included on "Echoes Of Ancestral Battles": "Taiga" and this bonus, sixth track on the cassette "Fall Of The Warrior King". And it's very good that they were included here, because they fit perfectly into the whole, which is maintained in the style of Epic, Atmospheric Black Metal with a Pagan touch. The dominant medium tempos and monumental nature of the tracks full of epic musical motifs, bring to mind BATHORY or FALKENBACH, but there are also a few faster fragments here, that remind me a bit of WINTERFYLLETH and a bit of early SAOR. Katurix does not close themselves in a tight, stylistic drawer, reaching for symphonic and folk elements. The aforementioned before "Taiga" is just such a folk-ritual interlude on this release, the pagan atmosphere seeping here from every sound. Of course, one cannot ignore the fact that there are no shortage of references to Tolkien's mythology, as suggested, for example by the title of the song "In The Dephts Of Phurunargian". As an aside, it's a shame there are no accompanying lyrics. I'd love to look through them.
As a fledgling creation, GALLIC HAMMER has recorded very interesting and, it should be added, ambitious material. There is no question of any monotony here and the whole is constructed in such a way that when listening, one has the impression that it is a conceptual release. I can listen for hours. Very good start. I will follow further steps closely.
