MEDIA STATEMENT
Tuesday April 18, 2023

(Report by Police Media Officer Constable Sylvester Wemuru.)

Five men were arrested by police in Port Moresby for stealing a mobile telephone worth more than K5,000 from the managing director of a security company and later attempted to extort K500 from the executive for the return of the phone.

On Monday, April 10, 2023, at around 12 noon, Mr Anthon Kaupa, the Managing Director of Kuima Security Service was at his office in Taurama with one of the suspect and others when his mobile telephone, an iPhone worth about K5,000 went missing.

On April 11, the suspect and his accomplices allegedly called Mr Kaupa and told him that they had his phone with them and asked him for K500 for its return. They told him to meet them at Bautama, in the Central Province.

Mr Kaupa called NCD police and informed them of the call. Police Officers from Sector Patrol 104 Unit quickly hatched a plan to capture the suspects.

A policeman in civilian accompanied Mr Kaupa in his vehicle to meet the suspects whilst other policemen followed in another unmarked vehicle.

The five suspects were rounded up and apprehended and the phone was recovered and given back to the owner.

Mr Kaupa is pleased with the police officers who he said did an excellent job planning their operation professionally and recovered the phone and also arrested the suspects.

STRONG SUPPORT FROM FINANCIAL MARKETS FOR PNG'S IMF PROGRAM

“PNG’s program with the International Monetary Fund is lifting confidence in PNG’s economy. With confidence comes stronger prospects for growth, investment and jobs. This international engagement improves the transparency of our economic management – we are a long way from the “fake” budgets of several years ago. The program is following PNG’s own economic reform priorities of a better economy and better government. This includes on-going budget repair, reduced corruption, and fixing PNG’s foreign exchange shortages despite the record level of foreign exchange reserves. The most recent analysis of the program by JMP Securities confirms these benefits for PNG” stated the Treasurer, Ian Ling-Stuckey.

“In a detailed 33 page analysis of the program released on 11 April, JMP Securities, robustly dismisses the social media claims suggesting PNG is going broke. To the question “So … are we going broke?”, JMP Securities states “The JMP Securities house-view is a confident NO!” The analysis highlights that the total level of the IMF loan are not a significant concern with the total level of IMF financing being only 6% of PNG’s debt and less than 3% of GDP. The analysis highlights ”the overall debt burden of GoPNG peaked in 2021 at 52.1% of GDP” and is then falling. The IMF considers PNG’s debt levels are sustainable, based on the announced 13 year program of budget repair. We are expecting further good news in this area when the Final Budget Outcome is released shortly.

“The analysis also highlights the conservative growth assumptions in our budget forecasts. This is in-line with international best practice to not incorporate new resource projects until the Final Investment Decision.

“This is another useful piece of analysis of the IMF program. I do not agree with all of the comments, and consider there was not enough emphasis on how

PNG THINK TANK GROUP INC CALLS ON MARAPE TO SACK HIS TREASURY MINSTER
"""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""
The Papua New Guinea Think Tank Group Inc. (PNGTTG) has called on Prime Minister James Marape to sack his Treasury Minister.

Former Governor of New Ireland Province and businessman Ian Ling-Stuckey occupies this critical office of the Treasury of Papua New Guinea.

Both Prime Minister James Marape and Mr Ling-Stuckey could not be reached over the weekend.

Chief Executive Officer of PNGTTG Inc. Mr Samson Komati has made an urgent call over the Easter weekend for Mr Ling-Stuckey to be sacked because of the state of PNG’s economy.

PNGTTG Inc, is made up of thousands of PNG Intellectuals across the country who debate and contribute ideas and solutions towards critical development issues affecting PNG’s spiritual, political, economic, and socio-cultural Issues, pertaining to PNG’s national development goals.

“The State of the PNG economy is in a total mess. Treasurer must be sacked by Prime Minister James Marape, “Mr Komati told the Pacific Herald.

In a statement released over the weekend, Mr Komati expressed grave concern that the 2023 Budget is in grave danger because of the out-of-budget commitments by the Prime Minister in the last three (3) years and eight (8) months and that it has reached over K5 billion.

“If he continues to pledge, promise and commit at this rate, he will reach K10 billion very soon. That is apart from the national debt of K57 Billion now and deficit budget at K6 billion and K11.8 billion in DSIP/PSIP to Members in 5 years, and all other outstanding bills of Government yet to be paid to all contractors and services providers nationwide, ‘ Mr Komati told the Pacific Herald.

Mr Komati pointed out that the government has failed in its efforts to decrease debt per year since 2011.

“Debt repayment must be scaled up to decrease debt per year. This has not happened since 2011 to 2023. Our debt is not decreasing annually; it’s increasing at a faster rate annually and that’s enough reason to sound alarming calls from everyone and deserving nationwide protests from all concerned politicians, public servants and citizens.”

“The rate and trend at which this Government is running the affairs of PNG is extremely scary and some of us reasonable thinking PNG citizens predict that if Prime Minister doesn’t discipline his Ministers from running down State institutions their systems, processes and procedures, NEC and Parliament will continue to remain a rubber stamp for cargo cult leadership for politician survival, expediency, and convenience,” Mr Komati said.

PNG politicians and government have gone mute while people are crying out for leadership as economy is at brink of collapse: Government must give answers.

Prime Minister James Marape's Easter Message

Blessed Easter to you, my people.

Easter is a time for all of us, Papua New Guineans, to come in fellowship to remember our Lord and saviour, Jesus Christ, who died on the cross of Calvary to forgive us from our sins over 2000 years ago.

Jesus Christ became the redeemer to forgive us of our sins. This season is a time we remember this great sacrifice our Lord made and translate the acts of forgiveness and healing into our own lives in the way we treat each other.

As the nation of Christians, we must practice the act of forgiveness and become agents of healing in our beloved nation.

As the Chief Servant of your country, I want each of you all to truly embrace each other as Christians should.

I know our nation is facing many challenges in public services and Law & Order. For this, we can all assist ourselves and our country heal by practicing Love, which begets forgiveness and care for each other.

God, through Jesus Christ, paid the ultimate price, acting on our behalf. Surely, we can practice some of those values for each other to make our lives better for ourselves and our country, which I know each of you love dearly.

As I close, let me assure you all that your Government is here and working for you.

May God bless you all.

UPNG hosting a debate for the PM Hon. James Marape & Opposition Leader Hon. Joseph Lelang on the pressing issue PNG is facing right now.

Since the social media flatform has been contaminated, it is fitting to host life debate talkshows so that an appropriate dialog are created. As a result, the right information are fed to the public from the actual people who're responsible for the topics of discussion.

Here we are looking at the PM addressing the nation through the forum hosted by the various universities in the country and it's a privilege to actually hear from the horses mouth.

Thanks to UPNG SRC team and the others universities to taking a different step in the right direction so that the people are fed with the currect information that they deserve.

Witnesses said people required medical attention and dozens of houses collapsed
Korogu resident Colles Pinga said three houses had collapsed in his village, north of the epicentre
The Natural Disaster Centre's Colonel Carl Wrakonei said the earthquake had impacted all six districts of East Sepik

The quake hit the remote Chambri Lake, south-west of Wewak, at a depth of 60 kilometres, just after 4am on Monday.

A spokesman for Papua New Guinea's Natural Disaster Centre said one person had died in Wewak, while two people had died in Angoram district.

A local councillor in Angoram district, Darren Mai, said the two dead were family members.

"One of the houses fell on [my family member] and her baby boy … they died instantly," he said.

According to early reports from villages in the area, people required medical attention and dozens of houses collapsed.

NGO Samaritan Aviation has been landing seaplanes on the Sepik River, where people have been taken to be flown for medical attention.

Korogu resident Colles Pinga said three houses had collapsed in his village, north of the epicentre, and families have been injured.

"Every ten minutes now we're experiencing shakes," he said on Monday morning.

"People are afraid … everything is very quiet."

"There's landslides along the riverbanks … it's quite frightening."

The Natural Disaster Centre's Colonel Carl Wrakonei said the earthquake had impacted all six districts of East Sepik.

"We cannot be able to cover the whole of six districts," he said.

"One of the challenges is mobility and accessibility, it's going to be difficult."

In a statement, Papua New Guinea's National Disaster Centre said it was conducting assessments of provinces to work out the extent of damage and casualties.

"The National Disaster Centre is currently awaiting the reports from the provinces and will provide a report on the full extent of the damage and statistics on casualties … as soon as the reports are received."
