Madison is one of the main original characters from the ‘my scene,’ (2002-2008) digital series and toy line. my scene dolls were released as a tween-catered fashion doll under Mattel. Though they could fit Barbie’s clothes, they had their own exclusive cyber universe accessible with purchase of a doll.
The website was part of Everthinggirl.com, which featured many sites for other doll lines by Mattel such as Barbie and Polly Pocket.
Madison, the first Black my scene character prior to special edition character, Jai, introduced in the “Jammin in Jamaica” movie. Mattel released three my scene films between 2004 and 2005.
Designed to compete with popular Bratz line of the early 2000s, the my scene dolls took on similar look of slim bodies and large heads. The New York Times described their features as “exaggerated lips and bulging, makeup-caked eyes.”
At one point in 2005, competing toy company, MGA Entertainment, filed a lawsuit against Mattel for its my scene brand, alleging duplication of Bratz dolls’ multi-ethnic looks, fashions, and packaging. The suit further accused Mattel of “engaging in acts of unfair competition and intellectual property infringement intended to damage its market share, confuse consumers and trade on the company’s goodwill.”
Mattel ceased selling My Scene dolls in the US in 2008, but continued to sell the dolls internationally, until Mattel ceased production on the My Scene line as a whole in the year of 2011. The official my scene website closed in 2014.

FRIENDSONFILM presents “BLUE.”
- “Who is friendsonfilm without friends? Social distancing forced me to have to answer that question. It was necessary in order to grow creatively and emotionally. So, instead of exploring the identities of other people in the outside world, I tasked myself with exploring my own.”
Inspired by Pablo Picasso's blue period, Annie Lee's "Blue Monday" and the "Rokeby Venus" by Diego Velázquez. “blue." (pronounced "blue period) was originally apart of the "A Different World" exhibition at MINT Gallery in Atlanta, GA. The featuring exhibit focused on the role of vision, perception and truth pertaining to the paradigm shift of year 2020.
“Blue." chronicles the emotional cycles of human misery by visualizing scenes of repression, reflection, and depression. Over the past couple of years, the confines of my room have become my new world.
These images represent a culmination of my thoughts fueled by substance abuse, doubt and isolation brought on by social distancing.

“Determined, social, self-involved” come up as terms to describe the character, Whitley Gilbert (Jasmine Guy), a fictional but foundational Black girl on TV who gave a new dynamism to the “one dimensional pretty girl” trope. In this Season 3 scene from A Different World (NBC, 1987-1993), Gilbert self-affirms the way she knows best — with her clothes. Adornment was a big theme for this character, and often became a point of strife between others on the fictional Hillman College campus, where she was widely regarded as bougie and “stuck up” for her projected exterior. We see here that for Gilbert, adornment is an armor, something leveling her through the new, overwhelming world of young adult transition. Jasmine Guy @iamjasmineguy and director and showrunner Debbie Allen have both discussed this character profile at length, and affirm that Whitley was fashioned to present a sometimes unlikeable but authentic Black girl who not enough people had seen in mass media before. Taking a cue out of Ms. Gilbert’s book today to “relax, relate, release” and not bend to the comforts of others. Wear the fur with the sunglasses. From @charactour - Personality... determined, social, and self-involved. Whitley is used to getting what she wants when she wants. She never backs down from a challenge, and she is willing to fight dirty for it. She may present a tough exterior, but the walls she builds around her heart are what keep people from seeing it.
