Research shared by News Medical, states, "Experiments in hamsters recorded over time revealed that downregulation of olfactory neuron receptors persisted after short-term changes that might affect the sense of smell had naturally recovered. The authors say this suggests that COVID-19 causes longer-lasting disruption in chromosomal regulation of gene expression, representing a form of "nuclear memory" that could prevent the restoration of olfactory receptor transcription even after SARS-CoV-2 is cleared." https://bit.ly/3Gx9evU

Researchers have discovered a mechanism that may explain why people with COVID-19 lose their sense of smell.

New research from American Heart Association shares that healthy living could alter the risk of heart disease in patients. "Ideal adherence to LS7 recommendations was associated with lower lifetime risk of CHD for all individuals, especially in those with high genetic susceptibility. In Black participants, adherence to LS7 guidelines contributed to lifetime risk of CHD more so than current PRSs. Improved PRSs are needed to properly evaluate genetic susceptibility for CHD in diverse populations." https://bit.ly/3rrrSB5

Background: Understanding the effect of lifestyle and genetic risk on the lifetime risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) is important to improving public health initiatives. Our objective was to quant

Researchers from the Boston University School of Medicine discovered a protein that facilities entry of into human cells. "Severe endothelial injury, vascular thrombosis, and obstruction of alveolar capillaries are common features of severe COVID-19. Identification of vimentin as a host attachment factor for SARS-CoV-2 can provide new insight into the mechanism of SARS-CoV-2 infection of the vascular system and can lead to the development of novel treatment strategies." https://bit.ly/3HcF8iw

Researchers have identified extracellular vimentin as an attachment factor that facilitates SARS-CoV-2 entry into human cells. Vimentin is a structural protein that is widely expressed in the cells of mesenchymal origin such as endothelial cells and a potential novel target against SARS-CoV-2, which...

Jing Sun, MD, MPH, PhD, of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health told Healio, "Persons with immune dysfunction still have a substantial risk of COVID-19 infection even after their full vaccination. Therefore, continued use of nonpharmaceutical interventions — eg, mask-wearing, social distancing, avoidance of travel and crowds — and alternative vaccine strategies — eg, additional doses or immunogenicity testing — should be recommended in clinical practice." https://bit.ly/32lVXs9

Although vaccines reduce the overall risk for COVID-19 regardless of immune status, patients with immune dysfunction are at a “substantial risk” for breakthrough infection versus those without, according to data. Specifically, the researchers found that patients with rheumatoid arthritis...

Dr. Cynthia McMurray from Berkeley Lab is working on the development of a test that could detect early Alzheimer's. "This is an integrated technique, which is a much better method for looking at states. We are not following a molecule in that cell, we are looking at this integrated signature that tells us the average of what that cell is doing. If it is in the disease category, it is a signature of disease." Hopefully, this method will become a baseline for Alzheimer's diagnosis, allowing treatment options to broaden and begin earlier. https://bit.ly/3GvtPBH

Results from a study conclude that myocardial injury due to increases the risk of hospitalization. "The presence of ongoing COVID-19-related symptoms at 6 months was more common in patients with cardiac injury compared with low-level positive troponin and undetectable troponin (56.4% vs. 30.7% vs. 12.8%, respectively), but the difference did not reach statistical significance." The U.S. Multi-Society Task Force made updates to screening recommendations, based on recent data. “Because precancerous lesions are not reportable to regional or national health agencies, we have not had this degree of information to guide our recommendations.
