OpenAI Jumps Into Text-to-Video Fray With Sora, Challenging Meta, MidJourney and Pika Labs.

OpenAI today unveiled Sora, a new artificial intelligence model that can take text-based instructions and create long, captivating videos. Well, one-minute long videos.

It’s currently a closed beta that's available only to invited developers, and represents a somewhat late entry by the global leader in AI. Text-to-video isn't exactly uncharted territory. Companies like RunwayML and Pika Labs have been in the game for a while and currently dominate the scene with models capable of creating stunning visuals in seconds.

But there's always a catch: these videos tend to be short, the story losing focus and coherence the longer they run.

With Sora, OpenAI aims to achieve consistency, generating highly detailed, minute-long videos that can seamlessly flow and evolve. It’s not a simple goal, as AI models effectively improvise every frame from scratch. A tiny flaw in a single frame can snowball into a cascade of hallucinations and unrealistic imagery.

OpenAI seems to have made headway though, with Sora demonstrating smooth, captivating visuals that are so far unmatched by current players in the space. Example videos were posted online by OpenAI, and some have been republished unofficially on YouTube.

Crypto: The Game' $100K Winner Skipped Strategy, Wrote Poems for Rivals!

Players of the smash reality TV series “Survivor” have employed various techniques over the years to outsmart and outlast rivals. But have any of the contestants ever cruised to a win by penning poems for other players and generally being so darn wholesome?

That’s the approach taken by pseudonymous player MFL in the first season of Crypto: The Game, a “Survivor”-inspired experience that captivated the crypto industry with a blend of real-world scavenger hunt elements, online gameplay, and strategic shenanigans. And it propelled him to victory in last Friday’s final.

MFL’s unique approach won him a prize pool of more than $115,000 worth of Ethereum (41 ETH), at the current price—but to hear him describe it, his genial behaviour was no conniving tactic. He was just enjoying himself and wanted to savour the experience. MFL also doesn’t speak English, and says he’s based out of a small town in Japan.

SEC Delays Decision on BlackRock's Spot Ethereum ETF Application

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has delayed a decision on BlackRock's spot Ethereum exchange-traded fund application.

A Wednesday filing shows that Wall Street's top regulator "finds it appropriate to designate a longer period within which to take action."

BlackRock, the world's biggest fund manager, applied in November for a spot Ethereum (ETH) exchange-traded fund (ETF).

The idea, if approved, is that the investment vehicle would give people exposure to the second-biggest cryptocurrency by market cap, ETH.

BlackRock CEO Larry Fink said in a CNBC interview last week that he sees "value in having an Ethereum ETF," adding that the approval of such funds "are just stepping stones towards tokenization."

BlackRock's spot Bitcoin (BTC) ETF was approved on January 10 and started trading on the next day.

The iShares Bitcoin Trust has been the most successful of all 10 ETFs now trading and has $1.7 billion in assets under management.

Popular stocks that give investors Bitcoin exposure have continued their slide as the leading cryptocurrency’s price plunges following the highly anticipated launch of spot crypto exchange-traded funds (ETFs) in the United States.

The major stocks of public companies that hold Bitcoin—such as MicroStrategy, Tesla, and Coinbase—are down significantly over the past month.

Such equities allow investors to have skin in the crypto game—without actually buying and digital assets themselves. But since Bitcoin, the largest and oldest digital coin, has taken a beating this month, so have crypto stocks.

Hackers Target Crypto Email Lists, Send Phishing Attacks Netting Over $700,000!

Email service provider MailerLite was the victim of a phishing attack, and the target was the crypto market, the company notified Decrypt on Tuesday.

According to an email alert from the company, the attack happened after a support team member clicked a deceptive link, entered their Google credentials, and confirmed the second-factor challenge—giving hackers access to Mailerlite’s internal system.

“Upon gaining access, the perpetrators executed a password reset for a specific user on the admin panel, further consolidating their unauthorized control,” Mailerlite said. “With this level of access, they were able to impersonate user accounts. The focus was exclusively on cryptocurrency-related accounts.”

Are Mt. Gox Creditor Gears Turning? Rumors Rattle Bitcoin Market.

Bitcoin fell after reports emerged saying Mt. Gox has started to repay its creditors—dragging the rest of the cryptocurrency market with it.

The long-defunct cryptocurrency exchange Mt. Gox is reemerging from the dustbin of crypto history, with scattered reports that its custodians have begun confirming the Bitcoin addresses of creditors to make repayments. This repoted movement in the compensation process for those impacted by the exchange’s collapse ten years ago, however, is having an impact on the crypto market today.

“The rehabilitation trustee shared your details with the cryptocurrency exchange or the custodian," reads an email reportedly sent to former Mt. Gox users. "In the future, it is anticipated that the Exchange will accept your subscription of agency receipt indicated on the System to receive repayment in BTC/BCH as your agent."

Jupiter Launching Solana Meme Coin With An Airdrop Even Bigger Than JUP.

Solana decentralized finance (DeFi) aggregator Jupiter is set to airdrop its own JUP token on January 31 for nearly one million eligible wallets. But the platform will test out its launchpad before then with an airdrop for a meme coin—and the aggregator’s founder says it’ll be an even larger drop than for JUP.

Jupiter’s launchpad will debut a token this week from Ovols, a “DeFi meets NFTs” protocol on Solana. The coin wasn’t created by Jupiter itself, but the protocol will use its technology to debut the meme coin before attempting to launch JUP to the masses.

We knew that Jupiter planned to help launch a meme coin before the JUP airdrop, but otherwise the details were unclear. We didn’t know whose coin it would be, or who would be eligible for the drop. But now we know that the airdrop is planned to be even larger than that of JUP itself.

SEC: Fake Bitcoin ETF Announcement Caused by SIM Swap Attack.

Two-factor authentication on the SEC's Twitter account had been disabled since July 2023, the regulator revealed.

The fake Twitter announcement of a spot Bitcoin ETF approval from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) ahead of the real announcement was the result of a SIM swap attack, the regulator revealed Monday.

In a statement, the SEC provided details of how its SECGov Twitter account was "compromised," throwing the crypto market into turmoil as it posted a fake announcement that the long-awaited spot Bitcoin ETFs had been given the green light.

Bitcoin Ordinals 'Quantum Cat' Sells for Over $250K at Sotheby's

The “Genesis Cat” Bitcoin art by FAR fetched 6.31 BTC at Sotheby's, with the wider Ordinals sale bringing in nearly $1.1 million in total.

A Bitcoin Ordinals inscription from the Quantum Cat project has sold for more than $250,000 at Sotheby’s, the famed auction house announced on Monday.

The “Genesis Cat” Ordinals inscription by digital artist FAR received over 50 bids, according to Sotheby’s, with the winning bid hitting 6.31 BTC, or about $254,000.

Earlier this month, Taproot Wizards announced the Quantum Cats collection of Bitcoin Ordinals inscriptions. The project of 3,333 images cost over $66,000 to create on the Bitcoin blockchain. The sale for the wider collection is set to take place on January 29.

Crypto Casino Rollbit Sponsors FaZe Clan in Multi-Million-Dollar Esports Deal!

FaZe Clan, a popular esports and gaming organization, announced a multi-million dollar sponsorship deal with crypto gambling platform Rollbit on Tuesday. The sponsorship will support FaZe Clan's Counter-Strike 2 team, which currently tops developer Valve’s world ranking.

The organization did not specify a precise dollar amount for the deal when asked by Decrypt, nor would it say how many years the deal lasts for. However, the deal is specifically focused on sponsoring the team’s activities outside of North America. Rollbit is not available to United States users, for example.

“We believe this marks one of the largest sponsorship deals in the history of Counter-Strike and esports, as brands like Rollbit look for new ways to connect with large, highly engaged global audiences,” said FaZe Clan President Erik Anderson in a release.

Terraform Labs Files for Chapter 11 Bankrupty in Delaware!

The firm said that the bankruptcy filing would enable it "to execute on its business plan while navigating ongoing legal proceedings." Terraform Labs, the company behind the LUNA and TerraUSD (UST) cryptocurrencies, has filed for voluntary Chapter 11 bankruptcy in Delaware.

In its January 21 filing with the state's bankruptcy court, the company listed assets and liabilities of between $100 million and $500 million, with between 100 and 199 creditors.

In a statement, the firm said that, "The filing will allow TFL to execute on its business plan while navigating ongoing legal proceedings, including representative litigation pending in Singapore and U.S. litigation involving the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC)." The firm also stated that it would continue to expand its Web3 business.

Brazil Stock Exchange to Open After Hours Trading, Give Bitcoin a Boost.

Bitcoin was the only asset besides the country’s own Ibovespa index approved for late night trading sessions. Brazil's main stock exchange, B3, will launch night trading sessions later this year featuring Bitcoin ETFs and Ibovespa futures. The move will see trading hours extended to 9:45 PM local time (which is 12:45 a.m. in London and 7:45 p.m. in New York), a response to the increasing demand from individual investors for more flexible trading options.

Besides Bitcoin, B3 will open trading for Ibovespa ETFs—the country’s equivalent to the U.S. S&P 500.

"There's a significant number of people who wish to trade at the end of the day. We perceive a certain pent-up demand for such an operation,” said Gilson Finkelsztain, President of B3, in a Thursday press conference. However, he noted, “This is a test. It increases cost, increases risk. We need to test whether it will be good or bad for liquidity."

Elon Musk’s xAI Raises $500 Million: Report

The AI start-up is eyeing an up to $20 billion valuation, according to Bloomberg. Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence venture xAI has secured $500 million in new funding, Bloomberg reported on Friday, amid an apparent showdown over the technology's place at his electric car company.

In December, Musk’s AI startup notified the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission of its intent to raise $1 billion in funding through an equity offering. Documents showed that Musk had already secured over $134 million at the time.

The Bloomberg source said that xAI is eyeing a $15 to $20 billion valuation, but the terms could change over time. Musk has not yet commented on the raise.
