It is said that a writer's worst enemy is the blank page… But is the blank page really the enemy? I would naturally want to agree with that notion. At least, it provides me something to blame for my inability to have these blog posts ready until the publish date. I would often spend the entire week (or weeks, depending on the idea) ruminating over the idea but not getting anything tangible on paper (screen actually)....

For today's blog post, I planned to write on something from my list of preconceived ideas. I sat at my computer past midnight trying to put the post together. After going at it for a while, my mind abruptly wandered off and perched on a thought that instantly got me in my feelings. Hey fam!❤️
Happy New Year to you and yours!🥳

A new year is a brand new slate and another opportunity to achieve all the amazing things you have always wanted to achieve.

As exciting as this might be though, it is also possible to go through the year, look back in retrospect, and realize that you barely accomplished any of your wonderful goals.

This week's post looks to address one of the ways we can guarantee positive results as we tackle our goals for 2021.

Hey fam!❤️
Compliments of the season to you and yours🎊

Been a minute in here:)

It's been an unusual year to say the least, and as we prepare to bring it to a close in a few days, I think it is necessary to do a little check-in with families and friends to know how we are all faring. This happens to be the focus of my latest blog post (link below).

https://twocentsjournal.com/how-are-you-doing-really/

A little about THE BLOG...

Back in November, I decided to bring to life a desire I had put aside for the longest time – starting a blog.

I had experimented a bit with a few posts here on this page back in 2018, and after giving it some thought, I decided to go all out on it.

TWO CENTS JOURNAL is a little space where I share my TWO CENTS on varying subjects, ranging from trends to personal experiences, with emphasis on the positive aspects of each topic in a bid to at least inspire someone somewhere or at barest minimum entertain you while you are on there... (More on the about page - https://twocentsjournal.com/about/)

Over the past two months, I have been taking baby steps in developing the blog site and I feel it is time to integrate this community and share the journey with y'all.

Currently, a handful of posts are up already and I hope you enjoy reading them as much as I enjoy sharing them.

Check them out here - https://twocentsjournal.com/

PS: Your feedback and comments are highly welcomed.

Wishing you an amazing 2021 in advance!🥳

In a society that expects us to be strong at all times and makes light of our weaknesses, it can be difficult to express our true emotions as this means exposing our vulnerabilities at the risk of having them dismissed or undermined.

END OF THE YEAR TIDINGS

On a reflective note...

Few hours to draw the curtains on a year that like any other, has certainly not been perfect and has come to different people in different ways - to some, the best yet and to others, the worst ever. The year hasn't been without its ups and downs, we've had wins and we've counted losses. It brought us smiles and tears, happiness and grief, varying in proportion from individual to individual, but in all of this, one thing is constant... Every one wants a better 'next year'.

No matter how good this year turned out to be, it is no argument that we all hope for more victories in the coming year. We all desire better days in 2019. We've all got those things we'd like to achieve or experience while it lasts but the plot twist is - just hoping isn't strong enough to get the job done. Mere hope is too little to create the days we desire to experience in the coming year. The fact that we greatly desire something doesn't automatically activate it for us. We've got to do more than just hope. Best guess is we'll start the year with high hopes and finish with hopes too but this time, lesser that the initial level.

Don't get me wrong, hope in itself is necessary but a reaction cannot proceed with just this one constituent. Other factors have to be introduced and maybe even a catalyst would be needed for the reaction to go through. Same as our dreams and hopes for the new year. They have no capacity to process themselves to give the desired results. Like every other known substance, they'll remain in a state of inertia until something acts on them.

And what are these other factors?

Well, there are a lot of things ranging from the right mindset to a preparedness to take on opportunities as they come, not forgetting the place of hard work and commitment. But personally, I believe the most important of them all is Proper planning.

Might sound cliche, but failure to plan is equivalent to a plan to fail. The importance of planning cannot be overemphasized. Have you written your goals for the new year? Mustn't be accurate, might be blurry, but at least, have an outlook on your coming year. If you don't count your costs early enough, you'll probably not notice the opportunities when they come by, let alone take them. Proper planning helps you decipher what route to take at every junction you encounter along the way, because there's an end goal in sight. Be elaborate with your planning. Be extravagant, but realistic. Be intentional. Set high limits and watch how your mind strives to meet them. Everything might not come to be, but as they say, shoot for the moon, if you miss, you might end up landing on the stars.

Trust me, I'm not a pro at this either, but the more I implement it, the more excited I am to try again. Approach 2019 differently. In reality, you've got nothing to lose and a whole lot to gain.

Just felt I should share this with y'all. I hope it makes someone's year the best yet!😊

Wishing you a blissful 2019!🎉🎉

A GRATEFUL HEART

Ever been gifted a brand new car or a thousand dollars? Remember how you felt? I've never received a present of such value, but I can only imagine how ecstatic I would be at such gesture. I'd probably go on thanking the giver the whole day. Such gratitude and more we are willing to offer for rare gestures.

The human nature by default has a tendency to appreciate uncommon gestures and neglect the common good we come across everyday. Those who flaunt their 'big deeds of goodness', at times for selfish reasons, are honoured while those that do the little they can with all their hearts are rather ignored. We have learnt to complain more and appreciate less. Greater value is placed on temporary material things rather than on the numerous priceless gifts around us.

Take a break and engage your imagination. How beautiful would life be if we reacted to things differently? What if rather than rant about the one thing that didn't work out, you recount the blessings of previous victories? What if you stopped complaining about how gloomy a rainy day is and appreciated the petrichor that comes with it? What if you grumped less about a failure and be grateful for the lessons that came with it? In every negative occurrence, there's always something to be grateful for. Rather than whine about the much you don't have, be grateful for the little you have. They're a million and one things we can be grateful for. We just never take out time to notice them. From little things like a good night rest to that brightly colored tree right outside your window, to bigger things like the genuine friends in your life and ultimately, the gift of life. Priceless, yet freely given. The air we breathe as well. There's no measuring the amount we consume individually daily but then no charge is placed on us. How gracious!

Learn to appreciate people irrespective of their strata. Greet that old lady that cleans the hallway at school. Be polite to the young man that walks up to you trying to find his way around. Appreciate that friend that sticks around through thick and thin, you don't find such often. Never take people for granted.

Being grateful has a magical way of setting everything right. Your thoughts are redirected from negativity and focused on the good side of things. Everything just falls in the right place.

WHAT IS YOUR MOTIVE?

What are the unseen purposes behind the things we do?

Our present world is characterized by all forms of evil. The hearts of men have become graves of murdered consciences and wells of mischief. The quest for survival and the desperation for means have influenced human minds to harbour negativity even towards their own kind. Given the world's system, it is no surprise that any act of good deed attracts numerous appraisals from observers and is held in high esteem.

But is every 'good' really good? Unfortunately not. Not all acts of goodness are actually borne from good intentions. Some generous acts serve as camouflage in achieving selfish goals. They may seem good from the outside but the purpose to which they're done is far from positive, ultimately annulling the action and giving it a negative resultant. "For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he". Genuine goodness is first in the heart, before it is manifested in the open. Good done with an ulterior motive is evil!

The issue is you can't always decipher the motives behind things people do as to categorize them in either good or bad. But the good news is that you can judge your own motives over anything you do regardless of what it seems to be on the outside. Ask yourself genuine questions like 'why am I doing this?', 'what's my expected result from this action?', 'is this really gonna benefit the person it is meted out to or does it have a boomerang effect such that it still boils down to my selfish gain in the end?'. Ponder on these things and make sure your replies are positive before you take action. Let not your conscience be silenced, let not your good be corrupt.
Get your motives right. You might end up taking the same action, but for different reasons.

Motives aren't only applicable in differentiating good and evil. Motives are also significant in actions and results(reactions). The motive behind every action we take, every decision we make should be borne from who we intend to become. The difference between a professional chess player and a novice is that there's a specific motive for every move the professional makes on the board and a specific goal attached to it, meanwhile the novice is likely to move random pieces around as long as he's safe. There's no hope of victory for the novice with such strategy except for a rare fate of luck. Same thing applies to life. You don't make random moves and expect to achieve the same results as someone with a strategic reason to every action he/she takes. I mean, we see this in our everyday activities. It's no parable.

Don't do things because everyone does them or because you're expected to. Be specific with your actions. Have strong reasons for every move you make and stick to them throughout the process. Be intentional.
Get your motives right. You might end up taking the same action but for different reasons.

02/04/2018

Incompetence. A feeling that can be related to by many. A feeling that has inhibited the expression of creative minds and the realization of great ideas, and ultimately dilutes –or in some cases, extinguishes– the initial passion towards the task in question. A feeling that has left ‘geniuses’ stuck at mere wishers rather than exploiting their full potentials. A feeling that arises with any mega idea that pops up in our minds, any desire to try something new, any urge to get out there and do something significant. A feeling that is mainly birth from the fear of failure as the human mental system is constructed to caution us against uncertainties, most times even against the very cravings of our hearts.

Ironically, I might not be in the best position to discuss this subject, as I feel incompetent to address it, but I’ll just go ahead and do it anyway – as that has proved to be the only way to surmount this negative factor.

Personally, I have come to understand that nobody is immune to this feeling but what differentiates the wishers from the doers is that while some folks have succumbed to their fears and remained in their comfort zone, others have learned to manage these feelings and ride on them to greatness. From my little wealth of experiences, I have realized that most often than not, there are more justifications for our restrains than there are condemnations. Our brains give us excuses as to why we aren’t taking the risks we ought to take. Sometimes, they come as genuine and quite convincing, but to every excuse we make, there are a-thousand-and-one reasons why we should actually get out there and act on that very thing that keeps on coming back as much as we try to run away from it.
In my own opinion, the most common excuse for not taking a shot at something significant is the sense of unpreparedness. The feeling of not being good enough. We withhold from taking actions, believing we aren’t sufficient for the job and we need to attain a certain level of readiness before we step out of our shells, but the truth is, there is no level of preparation that seems adequate. With each step you make in preparation, you uncover more height, and in your quest to attain the new maximum, more unfolds and you’re stuck at preparation with little or nothing to show for it. In the end, you’re either discouraged and quit the entire mission, or you end up wasting useful time that could have gotten you somewhere.

Now the big question is how does one get around feeling incompetent? The answer is super simple. Just do it! Yes. It’s that simple. Do it! Do it while the passion lasts, do it while the desire lingers, do it to the level your current preparedness can take you. There’s always room for improvement as we go further, but we would have a resultant of zero if you wait to ‘finish preparing’ and your view remains myopic as well as you can’t see beyond a limit until you approach the limit. Don’t be dissuaded by surrounding circumstances. There’s always a starting point. Work with what you have, build on it, and attain new heights. Don’t stop there either. Get new heights and work towards them as well. People who have mastered this principle are those at the helm of societal affairs. Yeah, it might not always work. We might eventually decide to quit somewhere along the line, but we can say that we tried. The old saying ‘there’s no harm in trying’ cannot be more correct. We're all trying.

Get up. Do something. Trust the process while at it.

19/03/2018

It’s 2:43 in the morning.
I’m seated right in front of my computer screen on a chair that has held my frame for the past four hours. A rather quiet night it has been with the only thing interrupting the serenity being the sound of wordless music filtering from a headset clenched to my ears through my earlobes. Its primary purpose - to serve as a source of the inspiration I need to get this one task over with, needless to say, it has not fared so well with that.
I’ve practically been rummaging my brain for the best way to get things started in here but in as much as there are a number of topics I would like to express my opinion on, none seems to fit for a perfect start. After a long period of contemplation, I decided to share something that has influenced my thinking in recent times, something that has made me see a lot of things in a different light, something that – in the real sense of the phrase – has lifted a burden of worry off me. And that is the concept of SEASONS.

Seasons here does not imply Summer and Winter or Rainy season and harmattan as we have back in my home country. No, not those. Seasons here represent the various phases we find ourselves in, intentionally or unintentionally, as we journey through life. I believe this concept applies to all spheres of life but I intend to look at it from a spiritual perspective. A perspective that is based on the written Word of God – The Bible.

“To every thing, there is a season and a time for every purpose under the heaven” – Eccl. 3:1. Further down the passage, the different times and seasons are emphasized on. There’s a particular timing stipulated for every phase of our lives according to God’s plan. His master plan has our timetables laid out and for every phase, there are requirements that must be met to instigate transit to the next. Each season comes with a purpose. These seasons are peculiar to different people but one that's common amongst brethren is the season of trials. It also stands as the season that many possess a crooked concept of or have ultimately given up in thereby hindering their progress to the next phase of their lives. Every Word we believe would be tried and only after they've been tried can they be considered as convictions – be it pertaining to salvation, finance, good health, divine blessings and what have you. Every vision you possess cannot be realized without adequate preparation. The value of gold is confirmed after it has been passed through fire.

Joseph was promised greatness, but in-between the promise and the manifestation, there was a season of trials, he was first sold by his brothers and became a servant in Egypt, he ultimately ended up in prison for being faithful in the face of temptation, but his conviction of the promise was unmoved. There was no room for compromise. David was anointed king but he didn’t assume the throne right after. His faithfulness was tried. Jesus was led of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil (Matt. 4:1). For every great assignment God assigns to a man, a season of trials is attached to it. A season that proves our readiness to handle the promise or the assignment handed to us. God cannot entrust certain tasks to people who aren't equipped to carry them out. Painful as it may be, the purpose of this phase isn’t to wear us out but to strengthen our weaknesses and equip us for what lies ahead. Don’t be broken, don’t lose faith, learn what the season teaches you and trust His Word.
“For I know the thoughts that I think towards you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you an expected end” – Jer. 29:11.

Good Morning.
