The Passage

Against vividness in glitterati sheen,
Where tone of splendour greeted machine,
Attention it says without any sound,
A statute of figure the frame captures round,

Rough stitched decorative warming in tow,
Lapel ornate symmetrical wooden in glow,
Clumsy dash of colour dishevelled sullen grab,
Smaller lessened details frivolous with drab,

All for a figurehead in one journey to flesh,
From bright delicious fortune to humanity's rest,
Arrogant self-serving expressions and mind,
Balanced by grooming and wandering near blind.

Introduction

See them lined in these scavenger halls,
The victor defines a moral discourse,
Blind in the eye for the efforts in mirth,
Between generations a land of own birth,
Yet weapons of our justice in the stark pacing yard,
Pinpoints and prickles awakening fault in their hearts,
Where hurt and in fright play puppetry to passion,
And ghosts of the crooked grant this temporary ration,
The living commanders propped like dignified lights,
Upon the eve of the bombing raid the fortress is in flight,
These cheaters these brokers of a damn beggar's recall,
Those scoundrels of bunching treachery and prophets to fools,
These lashers and shameful pock blighted crumbs,
Torn between honesty and the old righteous amalgams,
A conjuror of devilment and convincer of the poor,
These woeful prisoners on trial after the war.

Inside My Eyes

I see the shadow side,
The problem in the fix,
I focus on the things you hide,
A colour in the mix,
Continual and relative,
To the negative I have learned,
A web of stretched elastic,
Ready to snap whenever disturbed,
I carry aloft a fortune,
Of dishonour and discontent,
You must all take caution,
It will push me into a vent,
If you had any idea,
Of the difficulties I have endured,
You would not be so revered,
And you would be more respectful for sure,
Oh yes I am angry,
I'm glad that you can tell,
If you had had any experience of me,
You would be raising hell,
It's all too much to control sometimes,
Too much to keep in my hands,
I'm righteous in my emotion,
I'm a powerful and articulate man.

This final volume in the series is called Dealing With Me. It explores the difficult work needed for complex trauma survivors to relearn how to think and act. The brain is changed with every experience and during complex developmental trauma the individual learns coping mechanisms based on a distorted reality. Unlearning this at a biological level requires the continual and persistent reinforcement of balanced behaviour.

There's Something Unkind

It's just the way it is,
It's always been like this,
A nuance in the tension,
Edginess we daren't mention,
Ambient ghost of terror,
A subliminal boiling pressure,
Tender to the touch.

Slightly afraid at bed time,
Slightly afraid at lunch,
Slightly afraid for breakfast,
Like a bruise from a punch,
I know you can't feel it,
You would have to stay a while,
When you eventually see it,
You too would be scared to smile.

A whisper in the corridor,
And tip-toes up the stairs,
Gently push the bedroom door,
To fetch the toys and bears,
Piled up in the basket there,
With the playthings and the games,
Is shame.

I Don't Know Why You're Here

There's something cosy in comfort,
Something nice with sharing vices,
Chatting crap and slapping backs,
For being crooked and funny you see,

And in my heart of hearts,
I know better was meant for me,
And it's a waste of skill,
To associate with this ilk,

But something about you calms me,
No more indefinite ladder of improvement,
No more critical voice in my ear,
Just me and you with none of our fear,

The tension in the staleness of our air,
Shared as spiny protruding sticks,
Move an inch and inward they prick,
Beyond the realm of bearable frost,

This enchanting seclusion of thought,
In venues and street corners,
Dissecting international borders,
On paper with little plastic soldiers.

What do you mean cope?
Manage and elope?
Don't you understand,
It was out of my hands,
So little,
So afraid,
No-where to turn,
No better made,
How did I grow,
How could I learn,
Taken to corners,
Exaggerated stern,
Blamed for the hardship,
Blamed for the pain,
Blamed for the ridicule,
Blamed for smiling again,
No way to make amends,
Nothing in my control,
So this all now depends,
On hiding from them all.

Little me,
Unimaginable world,
Doing what I'm told,
Unless I forget,
Then it's a mess,
All of my self-assurances,
Kicked out of the nest,
Little me,
Huge wide world,
Doing what I'm told,
My only hope to fit in.
Listening,
To criticism,
Shame, pain, ridicule, the same,
Protect me from their games,
Subtle, intense and relentless,
Adjustments to my self,
Continual growth,
Denial of feeling,
Acceptance of demeaning,
Little me indeed.

Addiction

I love you,
This feeling I have,
What would I be,
Without what you give?
Here I am in an insane world,
Making sense of the stories told,
One page at a time,
See this shade of mine,
Need for a hand-hold,
Identification as the subject of you,
Love in the abstract,
Love in the pure,
You are what I always aim for,
You are where I find near peace.

In some dreary moment,
And you are not there
I succumb to quakes of fear,
Lose sight of what is dear,
Just to find my way back to you,
Lusting for release,
Making sinister plans to form,
A journey to the safest place,
I know,
If you could only see it too,
You'd understand me.

Avenues of freedom walked,
In imaginings of bravery,
Such distant relations with life,
No explosion of the guilty,
Feelings in darkened rooms,
This inward negative reversal of me,
The dress rehearsal falls short,
Because I love you,
And in this senseless reality,
You are all I really have.
