The Liberian government has declared that stringent security measures will be in place to ensure the safety and integrity of the democratic process during the forthcoming presidential election.

MONROVIA, Oct. 4 (Xinhua) -- The Liberian government has declared that stringent security measures will be in place to ensure the safety and integrity of the democratic process during the forthcoming presidential election.

Speaking to the media in the national capital of Monrovia Monday, Minister of Justice Frank Musa Dean warned citizens of the West African country against fomenting troubles during the election process.

"Notwithstanding law enforcement's willingness to work with the public in preserving the peace, no one has the right to disrupt the peace. Anyone or group thinking otherwise must reconsider," Dean said, with just one week remaining until the presidential election scheduled for Oct. 10. "We caution members of the public not to test the resolve of the joint security. Any attempt by anyone to disrupt the peace will be met with the full force of the law."

This comes amid rising concerns about the potential for election-related tensions and disruptions. At least two people were killed in Liberia's Lofa County on the weekend following an alleged violent clash between supporters of the ruling Coalition for Democratic Change and the opposition Unity Party.

While confirming and condemning the incident, Dean said the country's security agencies "shall be robust and prepared to do anything and everything legally permissible to protect the peace," pledging that a reasonable and proportionate force shall be used where required.

He said the Liberia Immigration Service has also been ordered to heighten security during the election period while ensuring that the country's territorial borders and boundaries remain safe and secure.

"In the event the police and other law enforcement officers are overwhelmed, the military will be called to quell any situation of unrest," he added.

VIOLENT LEADER: Why Is Boakai Not Strongly Condemning Any Such Acts?

As Liberia goes to the polls next week, an element of violence is being enabled by some leaders.

Why is Joseph Boakai not one of them wishing a peaceful process? Come on, sir. No Liberian should lose their lives to elect their leaders.

"We caution members of the public not to test the resolve of the joint security. Any attempt by anyone to disrupt the peace will be met with the full force of the law."

FEEBLE BOAKAI: Confidence Of Weak Man Amounts To Nothing

Opposition Unity Party standard bearer Ambassador Joseph Nyumah Boakai has told local journalists in Gbarpolu County that he has explicit confidence in the National Elections Commission (NEC) to perform the tasks they have been assigned.

“The seven commissioners of the NEC took an oath to serve their country, and I have confidence that they will do so honorably. They too are Liberians who want to see a better society. They have a duty to fulfill, and we trust that they will do it.”

In response to questions about the possibility of his party achieving a resounding victory in the October 10th poll, he stated, “It is possible because the UP support base consists of genuine people who are motivated by their convictions, not influenced by any benefits. We can feel and trust that they are determined and ready for change. I am not deceived by what they are doing because I know it is genuine.”

Boakai also issued a warning to the ruling party regarding any attempts to manipulate the elections, saying, “Let me make it abundantly clear that any plans or attempts to thwart the will of the Liberian people by rigging these elections will be forcefully resisted by us, the people of Liberia, and the international community, which has invested so much in the peace and stability of this country.”

He continued, “We will leave no stone unturned in working with international prosecutors to expose and arrest those who would promote electoral violence and jeopardize our hard-won peace. I appreciate recent statements by some of our partners, including the United States government, regarding safeguarding the integrity of these elections. Preserving the sanctity of elections is of paramount importance in upholding the principles of democracy and ensuring that the will of the people is accurately represented.”

“While we welcome the imposition of sanctions on those who attempt to undermine the will of the Liberian people, we call on ECOWAS, the United States, the European Union, the African Union, and organizations such as the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) to fully, thoroughly, and actively engage in the process now to avert any threats that may undermine these elections. This involves acknowledging and understanding the significance of identifying and combating any attempts to undermine this fundamental aspect of our society.” Please note that I made several changes to improve the readability and coherence of the text. If you have any specific questions or need further assistance, please let me know.

Cummings has a long history of philanthropy and supporting his home country Liberia, globally; supporting funding for water projects and providing students scholarships in Liberia, and donating to various causes including the African Methodist Episcopal University’s Innovation Center named in his honour.

Presidential candidate Alex B. Cummings, mingles with the crowd as he tours West Point neighbourhood with his wife Teresa. West Point was a hotbed for Ebola during the crisis.

In 2011, President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf conferred on Mr. Cummings the distinction of Knight Great Band – Humane Order of African Redemption; the medal is one of the highest honours in Liberia and is awarded for humanitarian work in Liberia, for acts supporting and assisting the Liberian nation.

BOAKAI IS SICK: His Frequent Travels Tell It All; He Can't Sustain The Rigorous Duties Of Presidency

Liberians go to the polls next month. There are those who think Unity Party president Joseph Boakai should take over. But President George Weah had done pretty well to continue the journey.

Not only that, giving Boakai seven years of the highest office is a death sentence. The man is tired; he can't stand the pressures of political office.

Look at his absence on the campaign trail. So why should Liberians take the risk?

Since the start of political campaign activities for the 2023 general and presidential elections on August 5, the candidate of the former ruling Unity Party, Joseph Boakai, continues to come under the public spotlight for frequent travels outside the country.

At the time where candidates should keep close contacts with voters, the purpose of the frequent travels by Boakai remains unknown, but at least two reasons have been widely believed to be prime reasons for his frequent travels.

It has been widely believed that the UP candidate is not in a very good bill of health with reports that one of the main reasons for these travels is to continue to seek medications.

Recently the Unity Party announced that Boakai had gone to the ECOWAS region for meeting but the outcome of that meeting was never made public while he was said to have gone for urgent medical treatment.

The man is unwell and should retire.

EMPOWERING RURAL WOMEN: President Weah Gives Margibi County Women L$ 5 Million

Commerce Deputy Minister Wilfred Bangura, on behalf of President George Weah, presented a check of L$5 million to the Margibi County Chapter of the Rural Women of Liberia.

During the event, Minister Bangura fulfilled President Weah’s promise to the rural women of Liberia, as he handed the check to Madam Kebbeh Monger, President of the Rural Women of Liberia.

“As you can recall, the ‘talk and do’ President backs his words with action. He promised two million dollars to benefit four categories across the country, including market women under the Liberia Marketing Authority, the Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLA) operating in the counties, rural women engaged in agribusiness such as farming, and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs),” Minister Bangura stated.

He added, “In fulfillment of President Weah’s promises, Madam President, we want to inform you that the program has commenced, and the funds are being disbursed across the country through your various structures.”

“Today, we are presenting a check of L$5 million to the Margibi County Chapter. Madam President, as you are aware, each district in this country will receive one million United States Dollars for rural women and one million Liberian Dollars for VSLAs.”

“We are pleased to present this check to the Margibi chapter of the Rural Women of Liberia. As your motto says, ‘When rural women speak, great things happen.’ We have no doubt that great things will happen as you speak, and the President believes in your ability to bring about positive change,” Minister Bangura said.

Bangura emphasized that this initiative aims to empower rural women across Liberia, recognizing them as a significant and powerful structure within the country. He reiterated the President’s commitment to consistently support their programs.

He stated that the initiative’s goal is to ensure the vision of the Rural Women of Liberia becomes a reality.

Madam Monger, the President of the National Rural Women of Liberia, expressed her gratitude to President Weah for his unwavering commitment to the Liberia National Rural Women Structure. She commended the President for fulfilling his promise and pledged her support for his re-election bid.

SOLEMN: Morocco Vs Liberia Match Cancelled Due To Earthquake

Following the earthquake that hit Morocco hard on Friday night, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has agreed to postpone the match between Morocco and Liberia in the 2023 CAF Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Last night, Morocco suffered one of the most tragic earthquakes in its history. More than 800 people lost their lives in a magnitude 7 earthquake that struck several towns in the country.

The Moroccan FA then made an official request to postpone the match against Liberia, which was due to take place on Saturday evening (21:00 GMT+2) as part of the African Cup of Nations qualifiers.

This request was heeded by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), which reached an agreement with the FRMF earlier today, as announced by the Moroccan Federation: "Following the earthquake that has affected certain regions of Morocco, the Royal Moroccan Football Federation announces the postponement of the match that was due to take place on the evening of Saturday 9th September 2023, between the national team and its Liberian counterpart, in the final round of the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers - Cote d'Ivoire - until a later date, in agreement with the Confederation of African Football."

"After this serious injury, the national football family offers its most sincere condolences to the families of the victims, and wishes a speedy recovery to all those injured," concluded the statement.

EARTHQUAKE IN MOROCCO: President Weah Conveys Deepest Sympathy

Monrovia, Liberia - The President of Liberia, H.E. Dr. George Manneh Weah has conveyed his deepest sympathy to the government and people of the Kingdom of Morocco following the death of more than 800 people in a large earthquake that occurred on Friday night near the Southern Moroccan city of Marrakech.

The President said he is in solidarity with his counterpart, King Mohammed VI, as he spearheads efforts to save the lives of hundreds more who were injured and trapped under rubble. The magnitude 6.8 earthquake is reported to have been followed by several aftershocks, which led to the collapse of buildings, including centers of worship.

In recent years, the bilateral relationship between both Liberia and Morocco has grown from strength to strength, which has culminated in visits by President Weah to the North African nation as well as his backing of Morocco's bid to host the 2025 African Cup of Nations.

"Images from the affected region are deeply disturbing," President Weah said. "The Liberian government," he added, "stands ready to offer its assistance in any way Morrocco deems necessary during this difficult period for them.'

Marrakech is situated west of Atlas Mountain, where the quake is reported to have occurred. The city is one of the largest in Morocco and a center of tourism.

RE-ELECTION BID: Weah Launches Re-election Mission

Liberian President George Weah, who is standing for re-election, launched his campaign for the 10 October presidential election in Monrovia on Thursday in front of several thousand people, who will also be taking part in parliamentary elections, an AFP journalist noted.

Wearing a blue boubou and cap, President Weah, 56, was cheered in a Monrovia stadium by his supporters dressed in T-shirts bearing his image and that of his running mate Jewel Howard-Taylor, ex-wife of former president and warlord Charles Taylor, sentenced to 50 years in prison for crimes against humanity and war crimes committed in neighbouring Sierra Leone.

"I am extremely pleased that you have placed your trust in me to lead this country for the past six years. I owe my ascension to the presidency to the hard work and perseverance of my supporters," said Mr Weah.

"During our first term, we laid the foundations for peace, freedom of expression, macro-economic stability and the restoration of confidence in the national education system. I can guarantee that the years 2024 and beyond will be better for all Liberians", he said.

The supporters were also wearing red caps, the colour of the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC), the party of Mr Weah, a former international football star who has turned to politics. He was elected president in 2017 and took office in 2018 for a six-year term.

In the crowd, Victoria Kpahn, 19, was preparing to vote for the first time: between two slogans shouted in praise of George Weah, she told AFP that she was sure of a "victory in the first round".The campaign officially opened on 5 August and is due to close at midnight on 8 October.

President Weah faces 19 rivals. Ellen Johnson Sirleaf's former vice-president Joseph Boakai (2006-2018), businessman and party leader Alexander Cummings and human rights lawyer Taiwan Gongloe are among his main rivals.

The National Elections Commission has accredited 46 parties. More than 2.4 million voters are registered for the presidential and legislative elections to choose 73 members of parliament and 15 senators out of the country's 30 senators.

The election of Mr Weah in 2017 raised huge hopes in a country ravaged by civil wars between 1989 and 2003, and ravaged by the Ebola epidemic of 2014-2016. The country of around five million people was only just recovering when it was hit by the Covid-19 pandemic and then by the consequences of the war in Ukraine.

WITCHHUNT: Boakai Vows To Go For President & His Team

Former Vice President and Head of the Rescue Mission Amb Joseph Nyumah Boakia has kicked off his campaign Tour across the 17 districts of Montserrado County, making his first stop in Gardnersville Township including Barnersville Estate, Chicken Soup Factory, and Stephen Tolbert Estate.

At the Barnesville Sports pitch, partisans gave a rousing welcome to Amb. Boakai chanting, “We don’t want KUSH, we want Boakai. We don’t want KUSH, we want Boakai.”

Elderly Women spread their Lapas at the entry of the Bardnesville sports pitch to welcome Boakai and his entourage including Senator Nyonblee Karngar Lawrence, dubbed the Rescue Mother, Senator Abraham Darius Dillon, Chairman Rev. Luther Tarpeh, the political Leader of Movement for one Liberia Macdella Cooper, B**g County Senator Prince Moye and other high profile officials of Unity Party.

Speaking to residents of District Eleven 11, Boakai promised to run a government that would seek the interest of the common people and prosecute corrupt state actors that would damage his government’s reputation to the outside world.

“We gave those individuals six years to run the country but they messed up. They never had time to seek your interest. Instead of seeking your interest they and their officials stole enough of the country’s finance just to enrich themselves,” he said. “And I promise you that it will not happen in my government when am elected as president. I will prosecute any official who will steal from the government.”

He pledged to restore a new Liberia during the first hundred days of his administration and cancel the issues of tracking fees at the Freeport of Monrovia.

Amb Boakia, at the same time, boasted of being the only top-notch agriculturist in Liberia, saying agriculture will also be a key sector that will be re-arranged to contribute to the nation building.

“As far as I am concerned, no one in this country has Agriculture knowledge more than me and am serous about it,” he said.

Earlier, Senator Dillon Welcomed the Rescue Mission and rallied supporters to campaign vigorously to make Weah a one-term President come October 10.

Dillon also said that in the first one hundred days, President George Weah and his entire government will be audited if the Rescue Team is elected.

“We will make sure that Old man Boakai audit George Weah and his group of thieves. We will make George Weah a one-term president.”

ELECTION TROUBLE MAKERS: US Fires Warning Shots

The United States Government has threatened sanctions on Liberians who may be perceived as trouble makers during the country’s upcoming general and presidential elections on or before October 10.

Addressing journalists on September 8, 2023 in Monrovia, the Chargé d’Affaires at the United States Embassy near Monrovia, Catherine Rodriguez gave the warning during her First Press Roundtable conference

Below is the full text of Rodriguez’s Remarks

Good afternoon! Thank you all for being here today for my first formal interaction with the Liberian media. It is an honor to meet you and I applaud the vital work that you and other Liberian journalists are doing every day to objectively report and inform the Liberian public about the most important issues of the day. I look forward to answering your questions.

First, I have had a heartwarming reception since my arrival through my interactions with Liberians from all walks of life. You have a rich heritage of being the oldest republic in Africa and your people are extremely, and rightly, proud of this history.

Like other countries in the world, your citizens will soon be celebrating your democracy by flocking to the polls to choose your leaders and representatives. It is a solemn responsibility. It is important that the government must ensure that these are fair, free, and peaceful elections, and to hold accountable those that would attempt to disrupt it. Officials must also ensure that the government invests an adequate level of money, personnel, and organizational resources to protect its citizens, candidates, polling stations, and election workers from intimidation or harm.

The eyes of the world are focused on these elections and how they are managed. The United States, as a longstanding partner of Liberia, along with the international community, has been working closely with the NEC to make sure that all election observers have full access to polling stations during election day, as well as access to the vote tallying. The U.S. Embassy through USAID is directly supporting both international and domestic election observer missions, as well as our own mission observing the election process across the country.

The United States is also prepared to assist in efforts to keep these elections free, fair, and peaceful by holding accountable anyone responsible for engaging in activities to undermine the democratic election process in Liberia through additional measures such as sanctions.

On a lighter note, I want to talk briefly about two very positive experiences that reflect the great partnership between the United States and Liberia.

First, Peace Corps has returned! Just a few weeks ago, 12 Peace Corps volunteers were sworn in during a ceremony at Monrovia city hall. They will be working in the education and health sectors during their service. This is so exciting because they are the first volunteers to return after the worldwide evacuation of volunteers due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Peace Corps has been in Liberia since 1962, the year after Peace Corps began, and it is wonderful to have the newest cohort back, on the ground, and working in their communities. Almost everyone I’ve met in Liberia has mentioned their positive interactions with Peace Corps volunteers. This is a rich history, and one that shows the deep relationship between our countries.

Second, I had the pleasure to visit Mt. Coffee hydropower plant. This plant, under Liberian management, is a testament to the enduring relationship between our two governments. Mt. Coffee will serve as a reliable green energy resource as well as a gateway to further electrification of the country – a building block for Liberian sustainability.

Before I turn it over to you for your questions, I want to thank you again for the work that you do, the essential fact checking, and the writing of stories that highlight issues affecting your communities.

Thank you.

REAL CHANGE: Marketeers Hail Cummings

The Standard Bearer of the Collaborating Political Parties (CPP), Mr. Alexander Cummings, continued his tour of markets in Districts 12, 3, 7 and 15, of Montserrado County, rallying marketeers, street vendors, and community dwellers to support his “real change” agenda that will relieve Liberians of extreme suffering and poverty.

Cummings, accompanied by CPP stalwarts, visited and was taken on a guided tour of several major markets, including Duala, Caldwell, and Logan Town facilities, amidst huge jubilation by hundreds of marketeers, and chanted slogans saying, “Cummings is the man we want.”

Market officials lamented the many difficulties and challenges facing them, including rising cost of doing business, poor sales, and the deplorable and unsanitary condition of markets.

The marketeers hailed the visit of the CPP Standard Bearer and in separate remarks pledged their unflinching support to his Presidential bid, which they hope will transform Liberia for the betterment of all citizens.

Cummings expressed gratitude for the rousing welcome and urged marketeers to encourage their family members, friends and loved-ones, to not only participate and vote in the pending October 10 elections, but to elect competent, qualified and responsible leadership that will transform the life of all Liberians for the better.

Cummings assured Liberians that the CPP Government is genuinely committed and prepared to revive the ailing economy, attract direct foreign investments, and create a strong private sector aimed at massive job creation for the thousands of unemployed Liberians.

The CPP Standard said upon his ascendancy as President, he has earmarked a US$20 million loan scheme for Liberian entrepreneurs, including market women to sustain and grow their businesses.

He said the interests of Liberians will take precedence in all the CPP economic policies and assured that the Liberianization policy, which set aside certain businesses exclusively for Liberians will be strictly enforced.

The CPP Standard Bearer street-to-street, home-to-home, business-to-business and market-to-market campaign has taken him to nearly all 17 districts within Montserrado County, which according to the National Elections Commission, has the highest voting population.
