Police in Mponela have arrested at least 106 students from Dowa Secondary School for allegedly inciting violence as well as malicious damage.

Mponela Police Spokesperson Macpatson Msadala has confirmed the arrests which were effected last night.

The students had allegedly went on rampage after complaining earlier that they were being served breakfast late.

Before the incident the school's management called for a meeting with the students in the evening but the learners turned violent after noticing the presence of the police at the meeting.

Police had to fire teargas to disperse the angry leaners and arrested those deemed to be the ring leaders.

All the students will appear before court soon to answer their charges according to Msadala.

President Lazarus Chakwera is this morning having a breakfast with journalists from various media organisations as part of World Press Freedom Day celebrations.

The day is celebrated internationally on every 3 May, to raise awareness of the freedom of the press.

A number of activities have been lined up this week as part of the celebrations.

Tomorrow, the journalists will vote into office new office bearers for the Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA Malawi chapter). Golden Matonga a well known Investigative Journalist working for PIJ, is competing with established Journalist Wonder Msiska of Times Television for the Chairperson of MISA Malawi.

The climax of the celebrations will be on Saturday when journalists will have a freedom march, and later in the evening those who have performed exceptionally well will be given an award

A driver of a truck which carried bales of to***co has died in a road accident that occurred at Tchawale Trade Centre in Dowa District this afternoon.

An eye witness, Chisomo Banda, has told BBC News Malawi that at the time of accident, the vehicle was coming from the direction of Ntchisi heading towards Lilongwe.

He says upon arrival at the trade centre, the vehicle missed the road and hit one of the buildings before overturning several times.

The Office of the President and Cabinet (OPC), sponsors of Civil Service United, has appointed Edgar Chipalanjira as General Secretary of the club.

Chipalanjira, who is from the Department of National Public Events, has replaced Ronald Chiwaula who resigned following his election as Super League of Malawi (Sulom) Executive Committee member in February this year.

A man with albinism in Chiradzulu is nursing deep cuts to his head and body at Thyolo district hospital after being hacked by some unknown assailants last night.

District chairperson for the Association of Persons with Albinism (APAM), Bernard Makanga, alleges that Ajas Salimu, was ambushed on his way home.

Salimu was rescued by some community members after he screamed for help.

Law enforcers in the district say they are investigating the matter.

Police in Monkey-Bay have arrested a man, George Gomani, 43, for allegedly defiling and impregnating his 15-year-old biological daughter.

Monkeybay Police station spokesperson, Sergeant Alice Sichali, has told Zodiak Online that the incident occurred between the months of May 2022 and March 2023 at Mwalembe Village, Traditional Authority Nankumba in Mangochi district.

According to Sergeant Sichali, in March 2023, the girl, accompanied by her grandmother reported to police that at some point the father took her to a hospital for abortion.

"As if that was not enough, the suspect continued to defile her to the extent that she conceived again, despite her mother knowing the whole scenario and in March 2023, the suspect forced the daughter to abort the pregnancy, but she ran away and narrated the ordeal to her grandmother," said Sichali.

"The matter was reported to Police, and a pregnancy test result at Monkey Bay community hospital, indicated that the victim was 5 months pregnant, but the suspect bolted when the issue came to light, only to be arrested now after being in hiding for few months, She explained.

Man jailed for burglary and theft

The Makande First Grade Magistrate's Court in Chikwawa on Friday sentenced William Foster, 23, to 8 years imprisonment for breaking into a house and stealing items K250,000.00

Public Relations Officer for Chikwawa Police Station Sergeant Dickson Matemba said the court heard from Sub Inspector Amos Bruno Jobo a prosecutor from Ngabu Police Post that during the night of June 8, 2022, Foster broke into the house of a business lady at Sande Village where he stole the assorted items valued at K250,000.00

M1 rehabilitation funded by a loan from EIB

Government has borrowed €95.5 million (K98.7 billion) from European Investment Bank (EIB) to rehabilitate part of the M1 Road, covering a stretch of 301 kilometres from Lumbadzi in Lilongwe to Chiweta in Rumphi.

The Malawi Congress Party (MCP), Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and UTM have said they are set to participate in the August 23 by-elections in Karonga, Chitipa and Balaka.

The wards, Lupembe in Karonga, Wenya in Chitipa and Shire in Balaka, fell vacant following the demise of respective ward councilors.

Publicity Secretaries of MCP and UTM Reverend Maurice Munthali and Frank Mwenefumbo and North DPP Region Governor Ackim Mwanza said they will field candidates in all the wards and pledged a peaceful campaign.
