We are four days into this deployment, and all I have to report is that this is really, really hard. My husband will be gone for six months. It’s hard to wrap my head around that amount of time when the last four days have felt like years. It isn’t missing him or having to get used to a whole new routine that’s hard. What’s actually the hardest is being unable to explain to my two year old that Dada isn’t here every time he cries out for him. I know it’s a good thing that he won’t even remember this deployment, and that he gets to see him on FaceTime, and he has a little picture frame of the two of them. But it’s still hard. And it breaks my mama heart that I can’t just make it go away.

This humongous life change is why this podcast has to slow down. I’m bummed that it I don’t get to work on it as much as I was previously able to, but I’m happy to keep it going. I’m currently working on three episodes and I can’t wait to get them recorded, edited and out to your lovely ears. You can expect the next episode to come out in the next couple of weeks.

Many thanks to all my listeners and supporters. Y’all are really wonderful and I am so happy you are here to share this fun project with.

Cheers!

Fun Fact Friday!! ⭐️ Well, it’s not a very fun topic, but it is interesting.

Seizure disorders and epilepsy are frequently reported medical comorbidities in individuals with autism. While a correlation between the two exists, how they influence each other has yet to be determined. Researchers are still exploring whether autism leads to seizures, seizures contribute to autism, or the two conditions coexist.

Epilepsy and autism may share similar genetic risk factors. Researchers have identified certain gene mutations that occur in both autism and epilepsy. Studies have found that siblings of children with autism are more likely to have epilepsy.

I can’t wait for this children’s book to come out. My guest from episode 23, Deniece Campos Landry and Dr. Joseph Talbet of are in the final stages of editing and releasing Puzzle Pieces, a children’s book about autism spectrum disorder.

Books like this are important, as it helps family members and friends learn more about ASD. The more we know, the more compassionate we can be towards each other.

I’m super excited to read this book! Have you read it? If so, what did you think? ...

Myelin is made by two different types of support cells. In the central nervous system (CNS) — the brain and spinal cord — cells called oligodendrocytes wrap their branch-like extensions around axons to create a myelin sheath. In the nerves outside of the spinal cord, Schwann cells produce myelin. Regardless of where it is in the nervous system, all myelin performs the same function, enabling efficient transmission of electrical signals.

Episode 22 - THE MIGHTY MYELIN SHEATH is now live!!

The myelin sheath is the protective, fatty coating surrounding your nerve fibers along the axon, similar to the protective covering around electrical wires. It allows electrical impulses between nerve cells to travel back and forth very, very quickly. Tune in to learn more about how the myelin sheath works, and what happens to our body when it doesn't work.

It’s time for Fun Fact Friday! Let’s nerd out about the rotator cuff, shall we?

Your rotator cuff is made up of muscles and tendons that keep the ball of your upper-arm bone (humerus) in your shoulder socket.

Muscle anatomy of the rotator cuff - best remembered by the acronym SITS
🧩 Supraspinatus - holds your humerus in place and keeps your upper arm stable. And helps lift your arm.
🧩 Infraspinatus - the main muscle that lets you rotate and extend your shoulder.
🧩 Teres Minor - the smallest rotator cuff muscle. Its main job is to assist with rotation of the arm away from the body.
🧩 Subscapularis - holds your upper arm bone to your shoulder blade and helps you rotate your arm, hold it straight out and lower it.

One of the most common shoulder injuries is a rotator cuff tear. A rotator cuff tear is often the result of wear and tear from daily use. Most tears are partial. You’re more likely to have this if you have a job where you need to move your arm a certain way over and over, like a painter or a carpenter, or you play sports like tennis or baseball. It also can happen if you fall on your arm or try to lift something heavy. It’s usually treated with physical therapy and medication, or you may need surgery.

Rotator cuff tears are the most common injuries in baseball, often seen in pitchers. Tears and ruptures can be prevented by practicing preventative exercises, taking pitchers out of the game after so many pitches, and body work post game to maintain structural integrity.
