Meet Our Last Intern of the Day: Eloise Rose Lopez ✨🌴
Eloise Lopez is a rising senior at Northern Marianas College. Eloise is currently pursuing her Associates of Arts in Natural Resources Management and Bachelors of Science in Rehabilitation and Human Services.
Eloise is currently the President of a school club called ‘ENRO’, known as Environmental Natural Resources Organization, which is an NMC-recognized student group that gathers themselves together to develop scholarly interactions and camaraderie, establish career contacts, learn organizational skills, conduct meetings and seminars, gain leadership and team-building skills, but most importantlyto showcases the impact in being aware and a part of the environmental change.
Eloise has also worked for the Division of Coastal Resources Management Program as a Division Environmental Quality Surveillance Laboratory Intern, where she learned how to collect and analyze water samples to determine if water is safe for drinking and swimming. She is also involved in the Healthy Oceans and People Empowerment, known as the Project HOPE Program where she is one of the Ocean Lovers Team Leaders where she educates 6th-7th graders on Ocean Awareness and the most wanted topic: The Marianas Trench. She is passionate when it comes to educating the youth about the ocean and she believes that the CNMI community can rebuild its ecosystem by creating a mentorship program for the youth on awareness of ocean conservation.
Eloise, a second-year intern, wanted to join The Sargassum Podcast because she wanted to see how she can relate all of the information she learned from her internship to a better and bigger perspective that represents back at home: Northern Marianas Islands.
One of Eloise’s hobbies is singing karaoke 🎵and going on adventures such as swimming by the beaches or barbecuing with friends and family! 🏊♀️

We talked to Dr. Ute Marx and Dr. John Roles who crunched the numbers on making crude oil from wild harvested Sargassum.
Great news: it will be competitive with cruedoil from fossil fuels, now they just need a partner (e.g. a Caribbean government) to help finance and put in place a pilot. They did this research as part of the Solar Biotechnical Systems Lab at the The University of Queensland in Australia
