One’s disability does not define them. PWDs are humans, just like you and me- they just happen to have a disability. Watch the video on how the ableist challenges PWDs face in their workplace affect them, and how you can play a part in eradicating these challenges.

The challenges that PWDs may face in the workplace can be classified into three main categories: stereotypes and biases, lack of accommodations and lastly, negative reactions by nondisabled co-workers and customers.

What can we do to minimize as much as possible the ableism PWDs face in the workplace? 1) Respect and understand that one’s disability is a part of their identity, but in no way encompasses them as a whole. 2) Speak up against non-inclusive and discriminatory company practices and policies. 3) Learn by practicing self-accountability. 4) Normalize being more mindful and sensitive towards others.

How have our surroundings growing up influenced the way we treat and view PWDs? Growing up in Singapore and in Asian households in particular, there may have been little done to change negative views and/or a strong avoidance of talking about mental disabilities perpetuated by others, leading to rooted ignorance and subsequently, fostered prejudice against PWDs. This all culminates in many carrying out acts of ableism in their workplaces when they interact with a PWD as fellow co-workers.

Ableism is defined as discrimination or prejudice against individuals with both physical and mental disabilities. Examples of ableism in the workplace include assuming and believing you know how a co-worker’s disability affects them without asking, and pretending one’s disability doesn’t exist. Though it’s important to not treat anyone any lesser because of their disability, it’s equally important to acknowledge that they face different challenges and act accordingly.

We created a short video to showcase what persons with disabilities usually experience in the workplace.

We hope that this video gives you a better understanding of what they experience when working.

So let's help them and make it better for them by creating a more inclusive society! :star2:

Want to learn how you can be more socially inclusive towards PWDs in the workplace? Here is how you can do so:

1. We should always treat PWDs as equals as they are still human beings and are just like the rest of us except with a few differences.

2. We should never assume that someone has a disability as they might not have any.

3. Do not stare at PWDs as this might make them feel uncomfortable and nervous.

4. Always ask before trying to help a PWD as they know what they need best for themselves and might want to be independent in dealing with their own challenges.

5. Always empathise with PWDs as our understanding and compassion might help them to feel more accepted in our society.

Though it may seem insignificant but every simple act of kindness matters in this society so do your part now! 🥰

This is the life story of Mr Chen Chee Min, which talks about the various struggles that he had faced after becoming paralysed.

For instance, he faced difficulties in learning how to walk again as well as in finding jobs as most employers were reluctant to hire him due to the misconceptions that they have on PWDs. However, he never gave up and persevered despite facing so many difficulties.

Hence, we hope that his story will help you to empathise more with PWDs and to not stigmatize them based on their disabilities as PWDs can be very capable as well! Have you had any experiences with PWDs in your lives before? Do share with us!

Here are some important statistics that we have found about Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in the workplace. Do any of these statistics surprise you or are you already aware?

Due to their disabilities, PWDs are usually not included in social activities and people tend to stigmatize them based on their disabilities. Hence, our group believe that we should all play a part in being more inclusive towards PWDs, not just in the workplace but in our every day life.

Do you know how you can play a part? 🤔 Let us know what you think in the comment section down below! Also, keep a look out for our next few posts as we will be sharing on how you can play a part!
