The drug addiction issue in London, Ont. has been described to be at a crisis level. The Middlesex-London Health Unit reported that in 2017, Opioid misuse was the third leading cause of accidental deaths in Ontario. And a report prepared by the The Ontario Drug Policy Research Network in 2020, stated that there were 1,018 opioid related deaths recorded in Canada in the first three months of 2020.
In this episode of Our Stories, we dig deeper into the topic of drug addiction where I have discussions with people with lived experiences about how they overcame their addictions. I also speak to an expert to give us more insights on the rehabilitation and recovery process of drug addiction.

How is it like living as a transgender person in Canada? According to the Survey of Safety in Public and Private Spaces, in 2018, approximately one million Canadians aged 15 and older said that they were part of the Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Trans community, also known as the LGBTQ+. Out of that number, an estimated 75,000, said that they were transgender. Transequality Canada revealed that 74% of transgender youth have experienced verbal harrassment and 37% have experienced physical violence. Transgender individuals in Ontario face unemployment over three times the national rate. As a result of discrimination and bullying, the trans community faces high rates of mental health issues.
In this episode of Our Stories - We take a dive in to transgender issues. What is it like living as a transgender person in Canada, the challenges transgender people face and the tools and resources available to help them.

In 2020, the Ontario Human Rights Commission released a report confirming that Black people are disproportionately subjected to use of force by the Toronto Police Service. The same report revealed that between 2013 and 2017, a Black person in Toronto was nearly 20 times more likely to be fatally shot by the police than a White person.
Although this report was based on Toronto statistics, there have been other reports showing the same trend when it comes to the relationship between Black and Indigenous people and the police in communities across Canada.
In this episode of `Our Storiesâ, we look at the over-policing of Black, Indegenous, and People of Colour and the outcomes of systemic racism and other discriminatory practices by our police services.
