Mast Cell Tumours or MCTs are one of the most dreaded tumours in veterinary medicine. Though they are easily diagnosed in the consult room, they immediately pose an issue as to grading, staging and treatment. Grade I MCTs, as we know, are usually easily surgically removed and pose a low risk of further metastasis, while high-grade MCTs may require multimodal treatment and careful monitoring. In this episode, we will be reviewing the new grading system for MCTs, as well as treatment advances for high-grade MCTs and reviewing the science on what treatment protocol is going to give us the best outcome for our patients.

Snake bites are one of the most common reasons for presentation at an emergency hospital, and also unfortunately at common cause of sudden death in small animals. With us starting to head into summer over here in Australia, snake bite season has already started. While there isn’t enough research in humans in regards to snake bites and how to best diagnose and treat them, the reality is even worse in animals. Today, we are looking at several recent papers, in particular Elapid Snake Envenomation in Dogs in New South Wales: a review, hoping to elucidate at least anecdotal evidence on what the best approach for diagnosing and treating snake bites might be.

If you live on the Eastern coast of Australia, you will be very familiar with the paralysis tick, which causes 20,000 cases of envenomation a year. Paralysis ticks attach to and feed from both cats and cats, releasing a toxin that causes ascending flaccid paralysis causing progressive hemiparesis, respiratory failure and death. In this episode we review the latest research on diagnosis, treatment and prognosis, as well as new technologies coming down the pipeline.

If you’ve ever worked in a shelter environment, you’d be well accustomed to treating very emaciated animals and having to place them on a treatment plan to avoid a so-called refeeding syndrome. This is a collection of metabolic changes and fluid and electrolyte redistribution that occurs following prolonged starvation or severe malnutrition. While rare in general practice, it is important to know how to prevent and treat it as it can be life-threatening. In this episode, we’ll review a collection of case studies to determine what the signs are, how to diagnose this condition and how to treat it.

While NSAIDs are the most effective treatment, they can also worsen kidney disease. Presenting Solensia, a revolutionary new treatment for arthritis in cats based on a monoclonal antibody against Nerve Growth Factor that has just been released. This is given as a monthly injection to reduce oral dosing. Find out how this treatment works, how to administer and what further avenues of research are needed to tap into the full potential of this drug.

If you’ve ever had undiagnosed cardiac patients who you thought had routine heart conditions suddenly develop cyanosis and respiratory distress, then you may want to listen in! You may have not heard of Eisenmenger’s syndrome, which is a rare complication of multiple congenital heart conditions causing a left-to-right shunt, which over time and with pulmonary hypertension, reverses to a right-to-left shunt. This can lead to polycythaemia leading to cyanosis, lethargy and exercise intolerance. This condition is so rare and understudied that there is very little evidence in animals as to treatment, prognosis and long-term monitoring. I’ve therefore tried to pull together as many case studies, expert opinion and comparison with human medicine to try and get a picture of how to diagnose, treat and manage this condition.
