Simple tips you can implement to make your everyday life more sustainable:
🧼Do less laundry and buy more earth-friendly products. Laundry is harmful not only because of the water and energy needed to wash the clothes but also because of the chemicals in detergents and the microplastics released by certain synthetic materials.

🍏Use your own produce bags instead of taking disposable bags every time you buy fruit and veg.

🥛Bring your own cup to events if possible, it means you won’t need to use disposable plastic cups! (Thanks Gabija and Sam for the tip!)

👚Buy second hand :) There are so many places to find pre-loved items: Charity shops, Facebook Marketplace, E-bay etc...

Greengrowth vs Degrowth
Both perspectives agree that the current model for growth which involves an ever-increasing consumption of natural resources is not the way to go, however their respective solutions are very different.

Greengrowthists believe that through innovations and regulations we can reach a system in which our economic growth is based on a sustainable, 'green' use of resources.

Degrowthists, however, think that economic growth and environmental protection are incompatible and that in order to preserve the planet we need to stop growing and even shrink the size of our economy.

This is an extremely complex topic, but one that is interesting to think about.

Circular Economy: From the line to the circle: how can changing the economy can help with the environment?
The current lineal economy is based on the manufacture, use and then disposal, leading to a massive waste accumulation, intensive energy use and extraction of raw materials. Circular economy however is based on reduction, recycling and reuse. By using biodegradable materials environmental damage is eliminated and the rest of non-degradable materials can be recycled and given a new role.

A number of international and national organisations have recognised that while the creative industries may have the power to generate change, the first step is for change to happen within the sector. For example, Arts Council England has created an Environmental Programme. There are reports and resources for helping organisations become more sustainable 🌿

'Climate crisis' or 'climate change'? The terms are similar, but climate change does note highlight the urgency of the situation. The term 'climate crisis' acknowledges the fact that the changes we are experiencing in our world - melting of ice sheets, the loss of biodiversity and a rise in the global average temperature - will soon be irreversible unless we drastically transform the way we use the planet's resources.

Greenwashing means providing misleading information about how environmentally sound an organization and/or its products really are. Greenwashing is an attempt by companies to capitalise on the increasing demand for 'green' and 'sustainable' products.

That's why its important to look critically at the claims companies make regarding their sustainability 🧐

And lastly team member #4 😊

Vinciane is French and British. She studied History of Art before working in Paris for an online art marketplace. Vinciane is currently studying towards a masters in Arts and Heritage at Maastricht University. She is interested in cultural policy and the contributions museums and visual artists can make to help combat the climate crisis.
Tips for living more sustainably: Buy second hand clothing (you can find so much in charity shops!), Make collages with old papers/magazines that you have lying around ✂️ Spread awareness but don’t pass judgement on others - criticising people doesn’t encourage change 🤝

Meet the team! 2/4 ☺️

Danae comes from Thessaloniki, Greece. Having finished her studies as an Archaeologist, she decided to focus on the interaction between sustainability and the arts, which brought her to Maastricht as a MA in Arts and Heritage.
She is interested in the creation of sustainable cities and communicating climate crisis through art.
If you ask her how you can start being more friendly to the environment she will reply: Bring your own thermos, always carry a tote bag with you, start composting, do you really need the plastic packaging? Food markets are much more fun 🥳

Meet the team! 👋 1/4

Francesca grew up close to Milan, Italy. She has a degree in Communication Design and she is now a master student in Arts and Heritage. She is passionate about cultural policy, post-growth economy and finding creative solutions to the climate crisis.
Fun fact: she loves donkeys! She has adopted one, Alin.

To live more sustainably she thinks it is smart to: eat more plant-based food, fly less, spread awareness about the climate crisis, always with love and kindness ☺️
