The liberation of Paris after over four years of Nazi occupation is complete, following the surrender of the Wehrmacht garrison in the city. After six days of fighting and significant contributions from the French Resistance, the U.S. Army's 4th Infantry Division and Free France's 2nd Armored Division rolled through the city in a show of triumph.
General Dwight D. Eisenhower had originally wanted to bypass the city to keep the Germans on their heels, but the provisional president of Free France's government, Charles de Gaulle, persuaded Eisenhower to carry out the symbolic and morale-boosting operation before turning his focus east.
