BRITISH SCIENTIST DISCOVERED OXYGEN!

On this day, August 1, in 1774, British scientist Joseph Priestley discovered oxygen by removing it from air.

This experiment was groundbreaking for understanding what oxygen is and how it works. Priestley isolated oxygen in its gaseous state not only to discover the element oxygen but to understand what it does.

Priestley was not the first to experiment with oxygen, as Carl Wilhelm had similar findings the year before. However, his discovery was not published until 1777, making Priestley officially the first person to discover oxygen.
This discovery has helped millions of people today.

NEW PLANET DISCOVERED!

On this day, July 29th, in 2005 Astronomers announce their discovery of the dwarf planet Eris.

Eris is the most massive and second-largest known dwarf planet in the Solar System.

It is a trans-Neptunian object (TNO) in the scattered disk and has a high-eccentricity orbit. Eris was discovered in January 2005 by a Palomar Observatory–based team led by Mike Brown and verified later that year. In September 2006, it was named after the Greco–Roman goddess of strife and discord.

Eris is the ninth-most massive known object orbiting the Sun and the sixteenth-most massive overall in the Solar System (counting moons).

It is also the largest object that has not been visited by a spacecraft. Eris has been measured at 2,326 ± 12 kilometers (1,445 ± 7 mi) in diameter; its mass is 0.28% that of the Earth and 27% greater than that of Pluto, although Pluto is slightly larger by volume.

A MAN ONCE ALLERGIC TO CHLORINE AS A CHILD BECOMES FIRST SWIMMER TO BREAK RECORD!

On this day, July 28, in 2001, Australian Ian Thorpe becomes the first swimmer to win six gold medals at a single World Championship meeting.

As a young child, Thorpe was sidelined by an allergy to chlorine. As a result, he did not swim in his first race until a school carnival at the age of seven. The allergy forced Thorpe to swim with his head out of the water; despite this ungainly technique, he won the race, primarily because of his significant size advantage.

Thorpe gradually overcame the ailment and progressed to the captaincy of New South Wales for the Australian Primary Schools Championships in 1994. He subsequently won nine individual gold medals at the New South Wales Short Course Age Championships in September of the same year.

At the age of 14, Thorpe became the youngest male ever to represent Australia, and his victory in the 400 metre freestyle at the 1998 Perth World Championships made him the youngest-ever individual male World Champion.

After that victory, Thorpe dominated the 400 m freestyle, winning the event at every Olympic, World, Commonwealth and Pan Pacific Swimming Championships until his break after the 2004 Olympics in Athens.

At the 2001 World Aquatics Championships, he became the first person to win six gold medals in one World Championship. Aside from 13 individual long-course world records, Thorpe anchored the Australian relay teams, numbering the victories in the 4 × 100 m and the 4 × 200 m freestyle relays in Sydney among his five relay world records.

A COUNTRY GETS ELECTRICITY AFTER 15 YEARS!

On this day, 26th July, in 2006, Power Restores in Monrovia After 15 Years.

The Liberian President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf today flicked a switch to restore electricity to the country’s war torn capital, Monrovia, after a gap of over 15 years.

At a ceremony to coincide with the 159th anniversary of the country’s independence, Mrs. Sirleaf-Johnson, who was elected at the end of 2005, pulled a switch draped in the Liberian flag illuminating a suburban clinic in the city.

"The switching on today is symbolic. It symbolises our journey from darkness to illumination," President Johnson-Sirleaf said in a speech.

She was joined by the Ghanaian President John Kuffour who said “…with the restoration of power to Liberia the period of gloom and darkness engendered by political turmoil must come to an end." Ghana provided equipment and manpower to assemble Monrovia’s electricity infrastructure after it was largely looted by soldiers during the decade of turmoil in the country.

Pumped water was also restored to the capital at a ceremony on Tuesday, which the World Health Organisation has declared high quality. These two major milestones demonstrate visible progress to the Liberian people that the country is making progress, and will add optimism during the anniversary celebrations.

"My last daughter does not even know what a street light is. When she saw it she did not want to leave," one 45 year old Monrovian told Reuters.

After becoming Africa’s first female head of state, Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf promised to restore power and water to the capital within 150 days, a target she reached it.

A LITTLE IDEA THAT SPREAD AROUND THE WORLD LIKE WILDFIRE

On this day, July 23, in 1904, a gentleman named Charles E. Menches who was serving at a party decided to try something new.

He filled a pastry cone with two scoops of ice cream and that's how The First Ice Cream Cone was created!

It must be said, however, that he is one of several claimants to that honor: Ernest Hamwi, Abe Doumar, Albert and Nick Kabbaz, Arnold Fornachou, and David Avayou all have been touted as the inventor(s) of the first edible cone.

Interestingly, these individuals have in common the fact that they all made or sold confections at the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition, known as the St. Louis World’s Fair.

It is from the time of the Fair that the edible “cornucopia,” a cone made from a rolled waffle, vaulted into popularity in the United States.

Exactly 42 years ago today (July 22), entrepreneur and founder of Australian Geographic Dick Smith completed his first solo around-the-world helicopter flight.

The sojourn was also the first solo flight from the US to Australia by helicopter and the first solo helicopter flight across the Atlantic Ocean.

For the ambitious journey, Dick flew his helicopter – in which he usually took his family ‘helicamping’ around Australia. The trip across the globe turned out to be much more than a leisurely activity, though, as he battled exhaustion, freezing temperatures, torrential rain, turbulence, extreme heat, dust and tropical storms.

He was even mysteriously shot at when he was over Alaska, with bullets hitting the helicopter’s reserve fuel tank.

Dick believed that a helicopter was a better way to record his flight through the various stages of his trip and he later turned his remarkable journey into a documentary.

On this day (21st July) in 1924, a young man made history as the first to gain the world speed record on land and on water.

Major Sir Malcolm Campbell MBE pulled the groundbreaking stunt using vehicles called Blue Bird, including a 1921 Grand Prix Sunbeam.

Campbell broke the land speed record for the first time at 146.16 mph (235.22 km/h) at Pendine Sands near Carmarthen Bay in a 350HP V12 Sunbeam, now on display at the National Motor Museum, Beaulieu.

He broke nine land speed records between 1924 and 1935, with three at Pendine Sands and five at Daytona Beach.

His first two records were accomplished whilst driving a racing car built by Sunbeam.

In 1925, Campbell set a new lap record of 100 mph (160.93 km/h) at Brooklands in a streamlined Chrysler Six.

Alan Webb broke a record that had not been broken for 25 years in the whole of United States!

The 2004 Olympian and Olympic Trials champion at 1500 meters is the current U.S. record holder in the Mile (3:46.91) that he set on July 21, 2007 in Brasschaat, Belgium, breaking Steve Scott's 25-year-old record.

Alan was also the fourth U.S. high school athlete to break 4 minutes in the Mile and the first prep sub-4 indoors when he clocked 3:59.86 at the New Balance Games in New York City on January 20, 2001, and later in the year, at the Prefontaine Classic on May 27, he made history again, racing to a stellar 3:53.43 and breaking Jim Ryun's 36-year-old national high school Mile record.

Webb, a three-time USA champion at 1500 meters (2004-05 and 2007), retired from competitive racing at the 2014 NYRR Millrose Games Wanamaker Mile on February 15.

In 2018, Alan Webb was fittingly one of 30 athletes inducted into the National High School Track & Field Hall of Fame, inaugural class.
