DAY 26
I’m not a big drinker. So you’ll never find me drinking during a session…….unless the Shipwrecks decide to make a stop by the studio. Then debauchery ensues. We must have drank 3 cases during this session and I don’t really remember doing the gang vocals. But somehow through all the haze came a pretty solid song.

DAY 23
So the whole idea behind Classics vs Classics is for a band to do 2 classic cover songs. 1 song within their genre. 1 song outside of their genre. The “outside genre” songs have been some of the most fun I’ve ever had producing music. This cover of “Drive” by The Cars done by Black Suit Youth is the perfect example. It was such an eye opener learning the ins and outs of this song and how well crafted it was. They did a great job on this one.

DAY 20
Reason Enough NYHC, the boys from Staten Island (along with Jerry Ex) came in and did a hardcore version of Rockwell’s 1984 hit “Somebody’s watching me”. This is exactly why I chose to include an “out of genre” songs on these comps. It’s wild what they made the song into.

DAY 20
Early 2018 my friend Lou made a post……something about wanting to do a punk cover comp with a bunch of bands. I kind of jacked his idea, put a little twist on it and came out with Classics vs Classics concept. 2 classic cover songs per band, 1 song in genre, 1 song out of genre. After seeing The Ice Cold Killers I quickly made them the first band to sign on.

DAY 19
Todays song is brought to you by the now defunct The Avoiders. John Browne delivers what may be the most perfect sung line I’ve ever recorded. It’s the first line in the 3rd verse.”If you’re out on a moonlit night”. Something about it is perfect to my ear. Go check it out.

DAY 17
The original guitar player in Cherry Pop contacted me some years ago to do some work for them. Turmoil ensued and he was ousted. They recruited Austin Hennings to sling the guitar and shortly after they were in the studio making the “Sue Me” EP. I can distinctly remember Cherry Bee walking in about 4000 circles doing vocals to this song.

Playing Dead is a producers wet dream.
They got talent, work ethic and are open to collaboration. The holy recording trinity. Not to mention Sam’s seemingly boundless ability to continually write new music. I’m very lucky to be in the mix with them. Oh and they also always make videos. What a bonus.

This is the most recent work I’ve done and just got released. It’s so new it’s not out on all streaming yet so you get the whole EP today. Tony Morace contacted me about doing a single for an upcoming comp The Stress was looking to get on. To my delight the single didn’t happen……instead they ended up doing 9 songs.

DAY 13
Steve Shields approached me to mix some Space Graves material that they had been recording themselves.……the beauty of digital. Shortly after I had them signed up for Classics vs Classics vol 3. This is a strong contender for my #1 all around favorite track of the close to 60 songs on all the comps. Easily top 3.

I’ll be honest I’ve totally forgotten how I hooked up with Discipline Theory. It was kind of like all the sudden they were here with their dark goth, industrial metal ways. Being a child of the 80’s this song really hit for me. Check out Eddie Castillo’s huge voice on this track……that scream at 3:02!

DAY 10
A few years back a saw vid of Sally May singing something a ca****la with a Billy Holliday flair to it. I knew I had to somehow get ahold of that voice. Around the time I was collecting bands for CvC 4 I had noticed that she hooked up with Butterbrain…….a “funk rock ska punk kinda hard to nail down genre” party band. There’s like 9 group members and a whole horn section. So it was a perfect opportunity to get her into the studio. I shot her a message and shortly after I was scheduling dates with Aaron Collins. I’d say Aaron is the brain behind the Butterbrain and a hell of a musician. Guy smokes on bass. This is another great ”out of genre” cover. Credit to Chris Arbisi for tracking the horns.

DAY 9
Sometime around the release of CvC 2 Mike Flaherty contacted me and told me that he loved this project and if I ever needed a drummer that he’s down to help out. So when it came time to do CvC 3 I took him up on his offer. I had always wanted to redo Sabotage by the Beastie Boys…..but at the last second decided on this instead. On a side note Mike turned out to be a BEAST behind the kit and totally took this song from average to stellar…..thanks brother.

DAY 8
Ive always said to myself that Elvis Costello’s “Pump it up” would be an awesome cover done in metal fashion. So to my surprise Robots and Monsters chose it as one of their covers for CvC vol1, and I was right…….defiantly translates well to the heaviness. They made a cool video around it too.

DAY 7
This is my first introduction to the boys and girls that make up Playing Dead. While gathering bands for CvC vol 3, I asked my buddy Joe Hess what other bands I should reach out to. He recommended a few but Playing Dead stood out because I was slightly aware of them already. I reached out to Sam and he seemed instantly sold. The “out of genre” cover songs that the bands pick for these comps are always really fun to produce. This showcases their talent perfectly. To be able to take this song and make it their own is no small task.

DAY 6
I’ve done a TON of live show recordings over the years but for one reason or another most never saw the light of day. A few years ago a good friend and past band mate (Lou Harding) passed away way before his time and we put together a 2 day benefit show for him. This is Crazy Eddie NYHC. Listen to the sweet harmonics Lenny Bednarz gets out of his guitars at the end of this song.
RIP Lou

DAY 5
I occasionally dabble in hip hop. I hooked up with Skriptkeeper about 7 years ago after seeing him on a Danny Diablo video. I was like holy cow that’s Josh! We went to high school together. He was fully engulfed in hip hop during high school and it turns out he got really good at his craft over the years. So he sent me his vocal and I created the track around it. I can’t believe this is 7 years ago!

Day 4
The Maisons / Matt came in solo a few years back and had a song he wanted to record. We work on the song for like 4 hours but it never seemed to go anywhere. I was about to wrap the session up cus we weren’t getting anywhere but Matt said “I got something else that may work” ….and out flowed “Blue”. It was like magic it came out effortlessly. Matt laid down drums and then overdubbed the guitar and then vocals. He let me add the orchestration and keys and we came out with this.

DAY 3
Blueblack a 3 piece (2 guitars and drums) sans vocal project. The guys brought me this project already tracked. So I only mixed this, I’ve grown to love mixing work I didn’t track. These guys make some really cool landscapes of sound. Tell me this song doesn’t belong in a Tarantino flick.

Fake Lighters record is one of my most recent productions only a few months old at this point. William Steckman (drummer of the Shipwrecks) contacted me about a new project he was doing. Part rock part punk rock, all good stuff and a key change to boot.
