**ONE TO WATCH** Jack Moser: Opening act review, The Skram Spooktacular - Whammy Bar Auckland, 31 Oct 2024.

We often turn up early to gigs, but it's rare for an opening act to match the calibre of the headliner.

If you read our Skram Spooktacular review, you'll know just how blown away we were by the magnificence that is Skram, but we felt it was only right to dedicate a full post to the outstanding performance of their opening act, Jack Moser.

In a word, Jack Moser is best described as dreamy. You might have seen Jack busking in downtown Auckland, twinkling piano keys and busting out a range of covers and originals with ease. But to see Jack own a stage is a next level experience.

Think Elton John, Stevie Wonder, and Diane Warren meeting to write songs with Radiohead and Pink Floyd, building a classic, progressive, and lightly psychedelic, jazz, blues, folk, pop fusion.

When artists present acoustic versions of their songs, it can highlight their strengths, but Jack is clearly a master of both his voice and his piano, channelling talent at equal levels over both disciplines with ease.

Jack's mesmerising vocals are a thing of beauty, raw, emotive, solid, and sincere, carefully controlled with a depth of tone, exploring an extensive range. Paired with exquisite jazz pop piano vibes confidently showcasing impressive technical skill, the whole experience is simply magical.

After we were quite warmed up, Jack dove headfirst into something rather impressive: Your Song by Elton John. When it comes to covers, Your Song seems like an ambitious choice, but Jack owned the stage and performed as if he'd written it himself.

Speaking of originals, Jack's songs are like friends who support one another so well it's tough to single out a favourite, so here's his set list to get you started:

Lying To You*
Where You Are*
Break My Heart Tonight*
Cupcake*
Something In The Air
Your Song (Elton John Cover)
All These Drugs
So Wrong*
I Don't Know Who I Am

*Available on Spotify

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Highly recommended for your playlists!

**GIG REVIEW** The Skram Spooktacular - Whammy Bar Auckland, 31 Oct 2024.

We've been to Whammy Bar countless times and seen all levels of artistic brilliance grace that stage but this one wins by miles. We haven't felt this kind of transformational experience since C.R. Avery's NZ tour shows in 2023.

In a nutshell, what you missed was like seeing David Bowie's famous Ziggy Stardust show at the Hammersmith Odeon. It was an absolutely mind-blowing experience.

As huge Bowie fans who've watched that DVD a thousand times, we completely understand the weight of that statement, however, we stand by it 100% and here's why:

Skram transformed that stage during every track. Whether original or cover, Skram's mighty driving force, Henry, took it, owned it, and delivered showmanship in spades, weaving and diving across the stage like it was their home, even Whammy's famous 'always in the way' stage pole became part of the show.

On drums, Felix knocked our socks off! Every swipe at the skins landed with precision and accuracy, channelled by passion and emotion, delivering a level of musicianship that never missed a beat. Think II from Sleep Token.

Most wouldn't look twice at your average keyboard player because if we're honest, they often get drowned out, but not with Dylan at the keys.

Performing a critical role - and all of them really perform - we've never seen a keyboard player own the stage from the side and make such an impact on a band's stage presence.

You'd think everyone would be focused on Henry, but Skram are a team, a Skramily (as they're affectionately known). This was clear in the way this well-oiled machine delivered, and then over delivered to an excited and fully engaged crowd.

Between songs we were informed that Skram had played one gig every week of this year and that they were exhausted. Despite this, Skram transformed the room, crowd in the palm of their hands, allowing them to experience Skram's vibrant and exotic world filled with energetic moves, powerful vocals, and infectious swagger.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Easily our Gig of the Year

**THIS IS IMPRESSIVE** 1 human. 112 songs. 11 albums. 7 singles. Almost 30 years of live performances, relentless touring, and over 40 festival appearances worldwide. Then there are the films, hip hop operas, cabaret shows, neo-expressionist paintings, and stunning books of poetry.

He's currently writing his first novel, recording another new album, and has started production on another epic film. One thing this Canadian outlaw troubadour knows how to do is create.

If this is your introduction to C.R. Avery, then we hope this is the start of a long and loyal journey to embrace his stories and his unique forms of artistic expression. Once you get into it, you'll see he's got wonderful things to say, presented in beautiful ways that are worth listening to.

We've taken the time to review his works, and we hope you'll take the time to explore our reels and grid posts before jumping on your favourite streaming platform or pulling up his channel on YouTube to inject some interesting and thought-provoking art into the soundtrack of your life.

And if you're hunting for some icing to top this most delicious of artistic cakes, we've got some good news! We recently stumbled upon a CD for sale which Avery produced in 2007. It's called Midnight Goldmining and we think this hidden gem might be one of his very first studio recordings.

Because it's only available on CD, and because it is such a fantastic album, we've asked C.R. if he would be interested in remixing and remastering it for a special release and he's keen! So as soon as we can get it sorted, we'll be supporting him to roll out this release so we can give it the credit it deserves. Look out for our review in the coming weeks.

**IT WAS A SATURDAY NIGHT** Lucky for Me by C.R. Avery is a must listen, 17-minute, country blues storytelling epic that starts off slow before sweeping you up in a killer chorus that's worth the 3-minute wait, though once you're on board, it won't feel that long at all.

"Cause it's real as it gets, just not another drunken night scenario", Avery takes the time to paint some beautiful and relatable poetic imagery supported by an equally poetic soundtrack.

Allowing for full vulnerability, his vocal delivery gives the impression it's just you and him catching up over a drink at a bar, one that becomes even more interesting and animated once the band kicks in.

Forming the finale for his concept album, The Bar Without a Neon Sign, Lucky for Me follows One Hell of a Ballgame and a track titled Epilogue, where Avery claims he's got one more left in him, and he certainly left the best for last.

It's probably quite healthy to experience a piece of art that doesn't prompt you to scroll on after a few seconds, and if you really get into this, not only do you get insight into Avery the human and Avery the artist, but you also get to experience poetry in motion driving a story shaped by thought-provoking themes and imagery - it's a snapshot of modern life beyond the digital world.

The music video is a visual feast of sights basking in the evening lights along the Expo Line of Vancouver's Sky Train tracks, Avery walking the streets of Vancouver, and a live performance of the track on stage with a full band.

In a musical landscape dominated by the 3-minute pop song, Lucky for Me goes firmly against the grain, making the most of every minute. Fans of legends like Kenny Rogers, Billy Joel, George Thorogood, and Don McLean will be scrambling to add this gem to their playlists.

While Avery ends on a sombre note, the journey his story takes you on flows with ease through highs and lows, making Lucky for Me a beautiful way to round off this outstanding album which if you haven't heard yet, now is a great time to seek it out.

**WISE WORDS** Only Take What You Need by C.R. Avery is a short, thought-provoking, honest, punchy, stripped back groove that highlights his talent on harmonica, with a subtle harmonica beatbox slid in at the beginning and end, clearly marking this as something definitively his.

As if this was a collaboration between himself and his favourite instrument, this single puts harmonica in the forefront where it takes the lead for the last word of every chorus line, cleverly harmonised with subtle backing vocals.

However, each harmonica line is delivered in such a soulful way that you might wonder what the lyrics to the harmonica solo might have been if it had been sung, because Avery’s playing style really gives the instrument a voice of its own.

Forming part of the world Avery created within his concept album, The Bar Without a Neon Sign, Only Take What You Need appears as the third track, strategically placed between Robert Redford by Default (Golf Pro Blues) and After Seeing a Sh*tty Poster for a Gig.

The music video for Only Take What You Need begins with the last verse of the Robert Redford poem, “Here stands a musician who was taken off the road, who stuck with the decision to live by an old thieves’ code”.

This is where things get interesting. Curious about said ‘code’, a quick search sent us down a rabbit hole of thieves’ codes appearing in many different presentations from ways for 16th century beggars and crooks to communicate, to Russian organised crime, Native American values, and even old Pirates’ codes.

It appears to explain a lot about Avery and his outlaw lifestyle, though we're careful not to dig too deep as he often expresses a desire to remain elusive, so staying true to that, we'll leave any conclusions you might draw from this up to you.

But in a world where a recent focus has been on decluttering, self-improvement, and prioritising what you really need to get by, the perceived message behind this track could be seen as a reinforcing narrative that’s worth taking on board.

**ANOTHER SIDE TO CHRISTMAS** East Van Xmas Blues by C.R. Avery was released as a single in 2022 in a roll out of releases that also included Amtrak Blues, Swagger, and When the Honeymoon is Over.

Every parent whose situation separates them from their children will surely feel their heart swell to this equally heartwarming and heartbreaking track and if you've been following the narrative in some of his other tracks, you would have pieced together that Avery understands this firsthand.

Set on Christmas Eve, this revealing and compassionate work lyrically draws emotion straight from the heart as Avery finds himself "surrounded by strangers, but I'm in good cheer, one consolation is my daughter, who's four and a half the reasons why I'm still here", before hitting home at the end of each chorus with the line, "the only thing I said was true, I came back for you".

One thing this track highlights is the balanced nature of Avery's writing style. Approaching topics with a kind of yin and yang mindset, he often provides narrative for multiple sides of a topic. In East Van Xmas Blues, Avery makes room to express not only love, but also the frustrations of his situation.

Writing in this way allows Avery to build strong connections with listeners to the characters in his work, even when the subject is himself. In this track, Avery achieves this by revealing that while he has a bad cough and hasn't been sleeping too well, he still has the heart to remember the smile on his daughter's face.

With carefully considered instrumentation and beautiful harmonic arrangements, this track also features one of Avery's most vulnerable vocal performances, reinforcing truths laid bare in lyrics that, on this rare occasion, in part appear to stray from his regular abstract poetic style, bringing you into his world beyond the stage, reminding you in the most relatable way, he's only human.

**STILL GONNA BE TRUE** When the Honeymoon is Over by C.R. Avery is a divine display of poetry, wisdom, emotional expression, and subtle humour, supported by a harmonic and instrumental arrangement that paints like Monet.

From those first notes, you'll feel at home, and at different points within this song there are likely to be a few lines you will directly relate to. This is the art behind Avery's craft.

Very few artists can maintain such a transformational air within a song or even across a body of work, but it's common for Avery to park up wherever you are and bring an entirely new situation, perspective, and atmosphere to your surroundings.

When the Honeymoon is Over is just one of many examples within Avery's varied and prolific back catalogue where you're bound to be swept away, and this time the destination is a really wonderful place to be.

Observing the ways we navigate different journeys through life, love, and relationships, Avery's vulnerable lyric approaches this topic with a beautiful honesty and sincerity, supportive of his perspective that 'life is not just one thing' by highlighting situations from romantic and plutonic, to humourous and sombre, all underpinned by a hope delivered in the final lyric's heartfelt silver lining.

The cover art for this single is a stunning original painting by Avery, visually providing the listener with a supplementary representation of his perspective for the tone on this track.

If you're looking for a delightfully abstract and thought-provoking musical experience, with carefully crafted poetic lyrics, gorgeous tones, harmonies, and melodies, fused with a perfectly pitched instrumental arrangement, When the Honeymoon is Over is the perfect heartfelt ballad to learn from and fall in love with, making it one we're sure you'll revisit regularly.
