Will it be a strike? Or are we overreacting?

NASA has announced that the impact probability of asteroid 2024 YR4 with Earth on December 22, 2032, has increased.

While still considered an extremely low possibility, the chances have risen to 2.3%, or about 1 in 43. This contrasts with the initial estimate of roughly 1.2%. Despite this increase, there's still a high likelihood (97.9%) that the asteroid will safely pass Earth.

Asteroid 2024 YR4, estimated to be between 130 and 300 feet (40 to 90 meters) in diameter, was first spotted on December 27, 2024, by the NASA-funded Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) in Chile. This size is large enough to cause localized damage should it impact Earth. The asteroid is of particular interest to planetary defense because it has surpassed the 1% impact probability threshold, warranting formal notification to various agencies and international organizations.

Observations of the asteroid will continue through April 2025, after which it will become too faint to observe until around June 2028. NASA's James Webb Space Telescope will also observe the asteroid in March 2025 to better assess its size. As more data is gathered, the impact probability will be further refined, potentially ruling out any threat or increasing the likelihood of impact.

On February 11, 2025, Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.) and House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer (R-Ky.) announced the formation of the “Task Force on the Declassification of Federal Secrets.” This bipartisan initiative aims to declassify materials of significant public interest, including documents related to the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy, Senator Robert F. Kennedy, and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. 

The task force will also investigate other critical areas such as unidentified aerial phenomena (UAPs), Jeffrey Epstein’s client list, the origins of COVID-19, and files related to the 9/11 attacks. Rep. Luna emphasized the importance of transparency, stating, “We will work alongside President Trump and his cabinet members to deliver truth to the American people. From this moment forward, we will restore trust through transparency.” 

Notably, Rep. Luna expressed her belief that there were multiple shooters involved in President Kennedy’s assassination, challenging the Warren Commission’s conclusion that Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone. She indicated plans to bring in attending physicians and commission members from the initial investigation to provide testimony. 

The task force is authorized for six months, with members to be announced at a later date. Their mission reflects a commitment to shedding light on historical events and government actions that have long been shrouded in secrecy.
