The Pakistan Meteorological Department’s (PMD) National Seismic Monitoring Center (NSMC) has said that a strong earthquake in the Makran subduction zone near the coast of Karachi could trigger a tsunami.

The statement came after an earthquake that hit Gwadar and surrounding areas on Tuesday night with its epicenter 50 km south of Gwadar at a depth of 25 km in the Makran subduction zone.

“After a long time an earthquake of this magnitude has been reported in the Makran subduction zone and was felt from Gwadar to Ormara,” an official said.

ISPs across Pakistan have been notified by PTCL that an outage on one of the international upstream networks has occurred once again.

First Islamabad-Istanbul train reaches Turkey.

After a pause of around a decade, the first freight train between Istanbul and Islamabad via Tehran reached Ankara via Lahore, Taftan and Zahedan on Monday, completing its 17-day journey in 13 days. A second train is already on its way to Turkey.

“The first train that departed on Dec 21 from Islamabad carrying goods (mainly pink salt) reached Ankara (Turkey) on Monday evening. Before reaching its destination, the goods loaded onto the train were shifted to other bogies (trans-shipment) compatible with the Iranian and Turkish rail/gauge system,” Pakistan Railways Director (Operations) Imtiaz Ahmad told Dawn. “The train consisted of eight wagons carrying pink salt weighing 150 tonnes.”

NCOC Reduces Age Limit For COVID-19 Booster Doses.

The National Command and Operation Center (NCOC) has decided to lower the age limit for receiving a booster dose of COVID-19 vaccines to 30 years, with the directives taking effect from 1 January 2022.
Citizens who have been fully vaccinated against Coronavirus for 6 months or more can go to their nearest Mass Vaccination Centers (MVCs) to get a booster jab of their choice.
The NCOC met earlier today and decided to expand the booster shot coverage after the country confirmed its first two cases of the Omicron variant recently.
On 1 December, the NCOC had originally started administering booster doses to citizens aged above 50 years, healthcare workers, and immunocompromised individuals after the Omicron variant emerged at the end of November.

PTA to Launch 5G in Early 2023.

Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has set a target to launch 5G commercially in the first quarter of 2023 in the country.
The authority will complete various stages before commercial launch, including the issuance of a strategic plan, the hiring of the consultant for the auction process, finalization of policy directives by 2022-end, and the finalization of incentives in the upcoming finance bill.
In a draft on the “5G Strategic Plan and Policy Guideline,” the Ministry of IT and Telecommunication (MoIT&T) has rolled out its tentative plan for launching 5G technology in Pakistan.

World's First SMS "Merry Christmas" Auctions for $120,600 as NFT.

The first SMS ever sent over a mobile phone in 1992 was sold recently as an NFT at auction for 107,000 euros ($120,600), the Aguttes auction house said.
The buyer, whose identity was not disclosed but is a Canadian involved in the tech sector, is now the owner of a unique digital replica of the first SMS message in the form of a Non-Fungible Token, or NFT.
The first SMS was a 15-character message sent to Vodafone employee Richard Jarvis wishing him "Merry Christmas".
NFTs are digital items that can be bought and sold using blockchain technology. They have become immensely popular for collectors, including artwork which sold for nearly $70 million at auction earlier this year.

Apple's AR/VR headset may launch as early as next year: Report

Apple is working on the most advanced chips for its unannounced AR/VR headset and now a new report has claimed that the headset could be in customers hands sooner rather than later.
According to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the Cupertino based tech giant is planning to launch its new headset in the fourth quarter of 2022. The fourth quarter of 2022 runs from October 1 to December 31, meaning that an announcement could be less than 10 months away, reports MacRumors.
Kuo originally said that the device was scheduled for launch in the second quarter of 2022, but after several delays with kickstarting mass production, it seems that Apple may launch it's headset in the fourth quarter.

Fault in submarine cable affects internet speed in Pakistan.

A fault in the submarine cable Tuesday has affected the internet speed in the country after which the Pakistan Telecommunication Company Ltd (PTCL) started to shift internet traffic to other cables.

South East Asia–Middle East–Western Europe 4 (SEA-ME-WE 4) is an optical fibre submarine communications cable system that carries telecommunications between Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Egypt, Italy, Tunisia, Algeria and France.

According to industry sources, the fault in submarine cable has affected internet speed in the country that will create problems for users at peak hours.

Sources added that the repair work on SEA-ME-WE 4 will be completed in January 2022.

Meanwhile, PTCL issued a statement saying that arrangements had been made for "alternate bandwidth".

Pakistan Achieves Highest Ever IT and Telecom Services Exports in 5 Months.

Pakistan has reported its highest IT and Telecom services exports in five months. ICT export remittances, including telecommunication, computer, and information services, for the period July-November FY2021-22 have surged to $1.051 billion at a growth rate of 37.57 percent compared to $764 million during July-November FY 2020-21..
In November 2021, the ICT export remittances were recorded at $221 million, fielding a growth rate of 31.55 percent as opposed to $168 million reported for the month of November 2020. Furthermore, $26 million higher than export remittances were reported during the previous month of October 2021.

The number of cars sold in the country surged 29% year-on-year to 18,714 units in November 2021 primarily on the back of a low base effect.

According to data released by the Pakistan Automotive Manufacturers Association (Pama), car sales had stood at 14,533 units in November 2020. However, car sales by Pama members were down 11% month-on-month to 18,714 units.
