Update:

Phi and Jess of the Subversive Social Workers Podcast will not be moving forward as a partnership. After several months of a break and discussion of where each of us are with life, we have decided to continue to move forward with individual endeavors.

We want to thank all of you for your support of our project and of us since our conception. We are grateful for the experience and all of the feedback that we received from all of you. We are going to be out here continuing to do what we do and hope that you all will connect with us on our individual platforms. You can follow Phi and Jess .essence
This Instagram will remain as an archive. It feels bitter sweet to walk away from what we put so much time into, and we are happy to have been able to be a part of your listening space.

With love and gratitude,
Phi and Jess

Did you know that gratitude not only has mental but physical health benefits? Gratitude isn't just saying thank you for the positive things, it's also saying thank you for how challenges have shifted your perspective and/or for getting through that tough time period that you thought would never end. It also aids in sleep regulation, stress regulation, and reduces pain.

A research team out of UCLA found that a daily gratitude practice does change the neural structures in the brain and leads to us feeling happier and content.

"It is not happiness that brings us gratitude. It is gratitude that brings us happiness."- Unknown.

What's something you are grateful for today?

Hey ya'll. The last couple weeks, but especially this week was a reminder for me, Phi, that I am worthy because I exist. And that everyday I do the best I can with said existence and that is good enough. My superpower? I am in full agency of how I show up in the world despite the systems and societal background noise that say otherwise. Liberation is rooted in intention, a gentle reminder I hold onto after taking one of courses. So intentionally I choose to shut out anything that isn't elevating me, raising my spirits, helping me to feel that I am dope or doing a great job because the fact that I woke up and am breathing is indeed great. What intentions will you set today and for the upcoming weekend? What goodness will you cling to?

It's a Friday and we are excited! If you ever noticed the episodes have gotten a bit longer and that is because there's more that we had to discuss! From She Said What She Said, to The More You Grow, to For the Culture all segments in this episode are packed with knowledge, tea sips and spills, and of course laughter which is our favorite. Make sure to check it out and let us know what you think!

Some of us grow up not knowing who believes in us, or we grow up having our dreams put down and dismissed. This internalizes to the point we lose trust and faith in ourselves.
You are inherently worthy of more than that.
Do the things. All the things. Trust yourself. Show Yourself as Elsa would say, Step Into Your Power.

Rp from Phi

I said what I said. I've seen a lot of think pieces, some very thought provoking actually, on what occurred last night between Will Smith and Chris Rock at . I'm not ready to fully comment.

What I will say as someone who does have two chronic illness who lives life as a black woman, hair is sensitive in our community and always has been. It's interesting for someone who made a whole documentary about black hair to even comment on it but hey, that's not my place to judge. At the center of this is a black womxn's pain and medical condition. I know whyte folx and women will have a different take and respectfully? This ain't for ya'll.
****************

Did ya'll watch the ? Outside of Will's slap heard around the world, he did win his first ever Oscar for King Richard and CODA (Child of Deaf Adults) won big and we think that also deserves some praise as it was the first time a deaf actor has won an acting Oscar! And CODA also won for Best Picture, which was really well deserved!

Your experience is your experience. You don't have to explain it, justify it or war/trauma story battle with someone.
This also reflects in relationships/friendships.
If your friend tells you something, normalize listening and not saying oh, yeah, me too, I get it and proceeding with your story.
Use your experience for empathy, not to diminish the other person's story.
This has definitely happened to me (Jess) often, and I'm like 😮‍💨 welp, let me just not keep sharing.

Y'all ever had a moment you remember, not necessarily the person's name or the company or the day, but the moment, that stands out?
Someone who helped you feel lighter? Appreciated? Understood? Valued? Seen?

This woman has been on my mind for weeks, so I felt it in my spirit to just start a thread. For moments like these.

What is a moment you can't forget? Me telling her I was hurrying, and she stopped walking to tell me it was okay. She saw I was doing it alone. She didn't see us running from one flight to the next, with bags and luggage and a three year old, but she saw us. She gave me a moment to breathe that has stuck with me. This was about 7 years ago.

Let us know your moments.

Jess here, and y'all! I have done had it with these Reels and TikToks talking about some, "I was 230 lbs, depressed and miserable" "My weight caused me to" "I was overweight and so unhappy"....then shows the weight loss or tries to sell a weight loss product or use a photoshopped photo.
I am all for people doing what makes them happy and making whatever changes they see fit AND to constantly see fat bodies compared to misery and assumed to be unhealthy, that has got to go.
What are y'alls thoughts?

Please take 2 minutes and call! Her life depends on those fighting for her justice!

Who is Melissa Lucio?
She is a mother of 9, who has a history of extensive physical, sexual, emotional, and mental abuse. In 2007, her two year old daughter, Mariah, who had a physical disability with her feet, fell down the stairs when they were moving from the home. She was prone to falling and injuries as a side effect of her limitations. She was examined with no physical signs of injury.

Two days later, Melissa put Mariah down for a nap, and she did not wake up. She was declared deceased at the hospital.

Melissa was immediately taken into custody, pregnant with twins, and was interrogated, berated, and intimidated for 5 hours. She was grieving, pregnant, and this was the middle of the night. Interrogation used tactics like maximization and minimization. She maintained her innocence and expressed wishing it was her instead
At 3am, after 5 hours, she says, "I guess I did it".

Corrupt DA at the time, Armando Villalobos, sought the death penalty, as it was an election year, and he wanted to win votes and support by being tough on crime....sounds familiar to VA case with
Armando was later sentenced to 14 years in federal prison for extortion and bribery.

He claimed she abused her children when there are 1000s of documents from CPS with her children that said the exact opposite.

Her defense lawyer, later joined the DA office
Jury was not given all of the information regarding the case, such as extensive abuse history and how this can relate to a false confession, and yet, a TX ranger was able to testify and say her posture and lack of eye contact was a signified guilt.

Your tactics aren't new. Come in, get "tough on crime" to show your voters you mean business....these are people's lives! Not your political pawns to prove a point of continued abuse of power and whyte supremacy values.
Terrence and Ferrone have been locked away for decades for a crime they did not commit. They have suffered. Their families have suffered. And you come in like a hot shot immediately writing letters to withdraw support? To gain what? You're not original or impressive. You are here to represent ALL that you SERVE. Not only those that agree with you. Lets remember you won by a landslide.
These men are innocent. Period.

Anyone like to read for self-care?
For those who listened to our most recent episode, y'all know, I, Jess, had plans to support the newly opened Black owned, Woman owned book store in Richmond, VA. The Book Bar. Y'all showed out on the grand opening yesterday!! Shelves were bare, but I did pick up these two gems. I have to admit, I have a ton of books I never start or finish. I am working to do better. Phi gave me a great idea, 10 pages, I may have to adjust from time to time, but I love the limit. I am someone that will start to read and be asleep asap! Even if I like the book. Anyone else?

We are now headed into year 3 of a pandemic and, as we mentioned in the most recent episode, those of us who hold space for a living have had to do so without many breaks. There are effects from that most noticeably symptoms of burnout which some of is mentioned in the above graphic. This week we are excited to navigate this conversation and more with ! We appreciate her taking time to chat with us this week. If you are a person who holds space for others, what are some ways you notice symptoms of burnout.
