GO BE GREAT!
THE WORLD'S FIRST ELECTRIC ROLLER COASTER:
Granville T. Woods (April 23, 1856 – January 30, 1910) introduced the “Figure Eight,” the world's first electric roller coaster, in 1892 at Coney Island Amusement Park in New York. Woods patented the invention in 1893, and in 1901, he sold it to General Electric.
Woods was an American inventor who held more than 50 patents in the United States. He was the first African American mechanical and electrical engineer after the Civil War. Self-taught, he concentrated most of his work on trains and streetcars.
In 1884, Woods received his first patent, for a steam boiler furnace, and in 1885, Woods patented an apparatus that was a combination of a telephone and a telegraph. The device, which he called "telegraphony", would allow a telegraph station to send voice and telegraph messages through Morse code over a single wire. He sold the rights to this device to the American Bell Telephone Company.
In 1887, he patented the Synchronous Multiplex Railway Telegraph, which allowed communications between train stations from moving trains by creating a magnetic field around a coiled wire under the train. Woods caught smallpox prior to patenting the technology, and Lucius Phelps patented it in 1884. In 1887, Woods used notes, sketches, and a working model of the invention to secure the patent. The invention was so successful that Woods began the Woods Electric Company in Cincinnati, Ohio, to market and sell his patents. However, the company quickly became devoted to invention creation until it was dissolved in 1893.
Woods often had difficulties in enjoying his success as other inventors made claims to his devices. Thomas Edison later filed a claim to the ownership of this patent, stating that he had first created a similar telegraph and that he was entitled to the patent for the device. Woods was twice successful in defending himself, proving that there were no other devices upon which he could have depended or relied upon to make his d

The MAS is hosting a very special guest soon! Come hear and meet former NASA Astronaut Joan Higginbotham on Thursday, October 17! We will be hosting a completely FREE Community Lecture and Reception from 5:30- 7:30pm that night!

Read a little more about her here:

Third African American woman to travel into space
Distinguished 20-year career with NASA as a real life rocket-scientist and astronaut, logging more than 308 hours in space
Inspires audiences with her trailblazing journey into space and beyond, sharing how to tackle any endeavor like a NASA astronaut for success

A retired NASA Astronaut, Joan Higginbotham flew aboard Space Shuttle Discovery in 2006 and became the third African American woman to travel into space. On the nearly 13-day mission, the seven-member crew continued construction of the International Space Station (ISS), embarking on four space walks with Higginbotham operating the station’s robotic arm. A real-life rocket scientist and trailblazing engineer, her journey with NASA began in 1987 as an aerospace technologist at the Kennedy Space Center where she soared through the ranks and participated in 53 space shuttle launches from the firing room. Selected as a NASA Astronaut candidate in 1996, she logged more than 308 hours in space, retiring from NASA in 2007. After her twenty years at NASA, she has held leadership roles with numerous large companies and now runs her own aerospace consulting firm.

She'll share insights and lessons learned during her distinguished career, while inspiring and captivating audiences with her personal journey of breaking barriers to boldly go where few have gone: space. In doing so, she'll highlight the keys to succeeding in her missions – including seizing opportunities, being prepared, perseverance, working with diverse teams, and thriving in demanding, high-stakes environments – as well as how these tactics can be applied to any endeavor.

PLUS, see the "Hubble Space Telescope: New Views of the Universe"

before it closes on October 26th. Experience the life and history of the Hubble Space Telescope through this interactive and stunning exhibit designed by NASA.

Meet Wes and Elijah! They live on Sesame Street with Wes’ mom and their beloved dog, Bubba. Wes loves using his imagination, playing with friends, and going to kindergarten. His dad, Elijah, is a meteorologist who loves to be outdoors, preferably on a nature walk with Wes. They both love to cook – especially food from Trinidad, like roti!
