How To Build Light Up Marquee Letters
Building light up marquee letters by hand isn’t as hard as you think it would be as long as you follow this guide.
You’re going to need the right tools to get the job done
1. 12in compound mitre saw
2. Table saw
3. Jigsaw
4. Brad nailer
5. Adjustable square
6. Drill
7. Hole saw
8. Staple gun
Materials needed:
1. 1/2in 4ft X 8ft plywood sheet
2. Brad nails
3. String lights
4. Paint or stain
5. Staples
Step 1 [ Draw The Letters On A Plywood Sheet]:
Draw the outline that you require for the letters to be on a plywood sheet. We recommend using 4ft x 8ft 1/2 in pine plywood sheets. It is quite easy to do a block style shape or you are looking for a relatively basic build. If you need blueprints for professionally designed letters we have the plans available that show the measurements so that you can make professional looking letters for download below. Tip make sure and draw 1in holes throughout the letters to put the string lights inside at the end of the build.
Step 2 [Cut Out The Drawn Outline Of The Letters]:
This step is easy. Simple cut out the letter backing that you have outlined in the last step using a jigsaw.
Additionally if you made outlines of holes for the lights take a drill with a 1in hole saw to the holes.
Step 3 [Cut Strips For The Outer Pieces]:
Take your plywood sheets and cut into many 4in strips.
Tip: A 3ft marquee letter build generally requires 16ft of length total per letter.
Step 4 [Paint The Letters & Strips]:
Use a mini roller and paint everything. My preference is Behr marquee white paint.
Step 5 [Find The Angles For Outer Pieces & Cut Them]:
Put the angle finder at each point where 2 outer strips are going to connect on the backing of the letter and cut the angles so that your outer pieces connect.
Step 6 [Brad Nail The Outer Pieces To The Backings]:
Brad nail the outer pieces to the backing.
Step 7 [Staple String Lights On The Backside Of The Letters]:
Staple the string lights on the back of the letters
That’s it.
