After a near 66-year-long mystery, police in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have finally revealed the identity of the "Boy in the Box," also known as "America's Unknown Child." Joseph Augustus Zarelli, 4, was first found dead in a JCPenney bassinet box in 1957

Police have revealed the identity of the infamous "Boy in the Box" as Joseph Augustus Zarelli.

Also known as "America's Unknown Child," Zarelli was found in the Fox Chase neighbourhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1957.

Little Joseph was found wrapped in a blanket inside a large JCPenney bassinet box. He was naked and had been beaten and showed signs of malnutrition.

Thanking the detectives who worked on the case Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw said: "Today, after 65 years, America's Unknown Child's name was finally restored. I want to thank all who have worked tirelessly since 1957 to give Joseph Augustus Zarelli his voice back.

"However, the search for justice continues."

At the time, his face was put on a poster as police tried to catch the killer, but nobody was identified and the child was buried in a grave that read "heavenly father bless this unknown boy."

Police said they have a suspect, but that it would be "irresponsible" to name them at this time.

Zarelli, born on January 13, 1953, was finally identified after a painstaking process by genealogists helped to identify his father. Police said they would not name the parents of the child out of respect for Joseph's siblings.

The naming of the victim of Philadelphia's longest unsolved homicide case will come as some relief to police officers who worked on the investigation, as well as the families.

Before the press conference, police confirmed they would be able to reveal the boy's identity, leading the families of some detectives to express their relief.

Bill Kelly took the fingerprints of the boy on the day he was found. His granddaughter Jessica Greene said "Pop-Pop" never forgot the image of what he found.

"He was one of the first on scene that fateful day," she said to ABC. "He never forgot about that image. I mean how could you? ... He was the fingerprint expert on scene.

"Those fingerprints were ingrained in his mind his whole life, and when he closed his eyes in his mind that's what he saw."

Jessica's mum Kathleen added: "I was thinking my father would be so happy... so happy."

Experts from the Vidocq Society took up the case and detectives also exhumed the body for analysis before taking it back to a grave site in 1998.

Jessica added: "I think as a family that's why it's important, not just us, but America's unknown boy has this identity revealed.

"But now with his ID coming to the forefront, we can piece together some of the theories they had in the past."

The family of Detective Tom Augustine, who was a pallbearer when the body was reburied, said the news of the identity brought them "closure."

"We grew up with those posters plastered in his office, in his house," grandson Matthew Braxton said to Action News.

"We grew up knowing at a very young age who this was. It was a big part of not only his life, but our life. So it's kind of closure for us too."

Outlaw said Augustine and colleagues showed "unending dedication" to the case.

Zarelli's grave will now be updated to mark the landmark discovery.

‼️ BREAKING: ARREST MADE IN DELPHI MURDERS

Multiple sources indicate that a man named Richard Allen, 50, was booked into the Carroll County Jail Friday in the connection with the horrific February 2017 murders of of teens Abby Williams, 13, and Libby German, 14. He's been moved to a state facility for his protection.

Investigators will not make any statements on the major developments in this case until Monday, October 31st at 10 am ET. It appears that Allen only lived .3 miles from Delphi Community Middle School, where both girls attended. His home is only 3 miles from the Monon High Bridge. It's rumored that he worked as a Manager at the CVS in Delphi. He's previously lived in Greenfield, Indiana.

Shortly before they were murdered, the girls were walking and taking photos on the Monon High Bridge in Delphi, Indiana. Libby was able to capture a Snapchat that investigators believe shows their killer, along with a recording that is believed to be his voice. The man chilling states, "Guys, down the hill." Investigators would eventually disclose through search warrants that the recording was actually 43 seconds in it's entirety. It's also believed that the killer may have taken a souvenir and staged the girls' bodies.

Over the past few months, investigators have been searching the Wabash River, near Peru, Indiana. Peru is approximately 40 miles from where Abby and Libby were found murdered.

It's unclear at this time if Allen has any ties to Keegan Kline or the anthony_shots, catfish account.

Abby and Libby's bodies were found on February 14, 2017 along a railroad bridge near Dear Creek in Delphi.

We'll keep you updated on any new developments. Prayers and love to the families that have waited so long for answers.

Suspect arrested in 1986 child kidnapping, killing

LEXINGTON, S.C. – A North Carolina man has been arrested on suspicion of kidnapping and killing a child in Lexington County more than three decades ago.

Thomas Eric McDowell, 61, is charged with murder, kidnapping and first-degree burglary in connection to the disappearance and death of 4-year-old Jessica Gutierrez in June 1986, according to arrest warrants.

McDowell, who lived in Lexington County in 1986, was arrested by the Wake Forest Police Department at his home about 20 miles north of Raleigh Thursday morning. He is being held in the Wake County Detention Center.

“We took a fresh look at this case in September when FBI special agents and analysts assigned to its specialized Child Abduction Rapid Deployment Team and prosecutors with the South Carolina Attorney General’s Office came to Lexington,” Lexington County Sheriff Jay Koon said. “SLED agents also joined us in reviewing initial reports and interviewing more than 125 people. Because of the work we did, coming together as a team, we were able to sort and connect more pieces of the puzzle about what happened to Jessica all those years ago.”

More than 3,500 case file pages were reviewed in September, according to Koon. Ten FBI field offices were involved in the reexamination of the case last year.

“This arrest is due in part to the many years of dedicated investigative work by local, state and federal partners, as well as the resolve of citizens who have never forgotten Jessica,” FBI Columbia Special Agent in Charge Susan Ferensic said. “Regardless of how long a child is missing, we will never stop searching for answers, and we hope that this arrest is a step toward healing for the Gutierrez family.”

Koon said the case would be prosecuted by the South Carolina Attorney General’s Office, which has held the case since February 2015.

“I want to commend the dedicated and experienced members of law enforcement as well as prosecutors in the Attorney General’s Office for their tireless efforts,” South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson said. “Without this newly discovered information our office would not be able to prosecute this case.”

Wilson stressed that all defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.

“We look forward to working with all the agencies involved to get justice for Jessica’s family and, hopefully, bring her home. They’ve been waiting a long time and we’re glad to be a part of another step in the process,” Koon said. “And the community support to the family and to those who’ve worked on this case has been invaluable. We know they’ll remember Jessica and stand with her family in the coming days.”
