We met with Craig Buerstatte, deputy assistant secretary for regional affairs, to learn how the agency is meeting the needs of and in rural areas and cities across the country.

🐟🐟🐟 Are you eating fish full of plastic and other harmful contaminants? Turns out many of us are, with 60% of fish containing microplastics according to a 2020 study by the Marine Pollution Bulletin.

Commissioner Kevin Shutty represents Mason County, WA by serving on a variety of boards, councils, and commissions.

One major initiative involves cleaning water and leading restoration projects to purify and protect the county’s salmon runs and shellfish growing opportunities (ever heard of a geoduck oyster?).

Before joining NLC, Anthony was the mayor of South Bay, Florida, a small rural city off the shores of Lake Okeechobee. Fun fact: Anthony was elected mayor of South Bay at age 24, and served as mayor for 24 years.

“It took me 40 years to become authentic about where I grew up and my life experience and being a Black man in this kind of role,” Anthony said during our interview. “It took me a while to own it. But now that I do, I own it every day.”

Thanks to Monroe County BOCC - Florida Keys' Florida Keys Canal Restoration Program, the water quality of the canals has improved by leaps and bounds. Now, it’s safe to swim and fish in the canals, and like shrimp and manatees can be seen swimming in the canals every day.

We met with Monroe County Commissioner Michelle Lincoln to dive into the county’s program and how it’s not only making residential communities look nicer and smell better, but improving the quality of their reefs as well.
