Some armed youths have killed a man, identified as Honest Martin, in a renewed cult war in Bayelsa State.

Our correspondent gathered that the incident happened on Wednesday in Sagbama, headquarters of the Sagbama Local Government Area of the state.

The killing was reportedly triggered by a supremacy battle involving members of the Bobos, Greenlanders and Icelanders cults.

The assailants were said to have invaded Martin’s home around 1.45am, dragged him outside and cut off his head.

A source said the hoodlums thereafter displayed the severed head of the 30-year-old on a stake in the area.

He said, “We gathered that he was shouting, but the guys slit his throat and cut off his head. When we woke up in the morning, we discovered the headless body of the victim.

“Upon further search for the missing head, we discovered it hanged on a pole at the centre of the town. We were later told it was a clear message of war against their rival cult, which the deceased belonged to.”

The state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Asinim Butswat, confirmed the incident.

He said, “On March 9, 2022, around 2am, police operatives were informed that a suspected cultist, Honest Martin, 30, was found outside his house at Sagbama community beheaded by a suspected rival cult. Police operatives took the co**se to St. Luke Mortuary, Sagbama. Investigation is ongoing.”

The United States will send $13.6 billion in humanitarian and military aid to Ukraine after the US House approved a $1.5 trillion spending bill to keep the government’s doors open for the next six months.

The bill included more than $4 billion to assist Ukraine and others in Eastern Europe grappling with the millions of refugees fleeing the former Soviet republic after Russia invaded two weeks ago.

Nearly $7 billion would backfill the transfer of US military equipment to Ukraine and its allies, as well as cover the current and future deployment of American troops and equipment to defend NATO in the region.

US President Joe Biden said he would not send troops to Ukraine.

“We are becoming a witness to one of the worst humanitarian crises we have seen in generations, which is why this bill provides $13.6 billion in humanitarian assistance.

“The defence support and economic aid to help the Ukrainian people in their most desperate hour of need,’’ said House Appropriations Chairperson Rosa DeLauro, D-Connecticut.

The bill was divided into two parts; the defence portion was approved overwhelmingly by members of both parties, 361 to369.

The remaining pieces had less support from Republicans but were approved 260 to 171, with one present vote.

The 2,741-page government spending bill attempts to avert a shutdown as soon as Friday evening.

The bill now moves to the Senate, where leaders hope to approve it quickly, but they have a brief, stopgap spending bill on deck if needed to avert a shutdown.

Justice Daurabo Sikkam of the Gombe State High Court has convicted and sentenced an impersonator, Wadaji Lawan, to 15 months’ imprisonment.

Lawan was arraigned on two counts of forgery and attempt to commit an offence contrary to sections 95 and 362 and punishable under Section 364 of the Penal Code Law.

A statement by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Wednesday said in February 2021, Lawan made representation to the public, offering to procure grants for them from the Tony Elumelu Foundation.

He was said to have made about N2.5m from the scheme.

Following the receipt of complaints on his activities, undercover operatives pretending to be interested in the fraudulent scheme presented N10,000 each to him to be registered.

“According to investigation, Lawan and his accomplices used the Hausa/Fulani Progressive Development Association and two other unregistered companies; Creative Global Technology and Wul Nigeria Limited, to perpetrate the fraud.

“Tony Elumelu Foundation confirmed that neither the defendant nor his accomplices had any connection to the foundation and Lawan’s name was not found in its alumni database. The suspects were subsequently arrested,” the statement added.

The defendant pleaded guilty to the charges upon his arraignment.

Justice Sikkam sentenced him to three months’ imprisonment on count one with an option of N30,000 fine, and one year on count two, with an option of N100,000 fine.

Speaking at an event held at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Onikan to commemorate International Women’s Day on Tuesday, March 8, the governor noted that buses that have closed for the day would indicate by switching off its inner lights.

According to him, when BRT drivers switch off their inner lights, Sanwo-Olu said the buses were expected to be taken back empty to their yards.

Iconic brands like PepsiCo, Coca-Cola, McDonald’s, and Starbucks have announced they are suspending business in Russia after that country’s invasion of Ukraine.

The decision to do so comes after Pepsi, Coke, McDonald’s and Starbucks drew criticism for continuing to operate in Russia while other U.S. companies announced suspensions and paused sales.

A Yale Professor Jeffrey Sonnenfeld had compiled and made public a list of U.S. companies that have withdrawn from Russia following President Vladimir Putin’s invasion  and those that hadn’t.

On Tuesday afternoon,  Coke said in a brief statement: “Our hearts are with the people who are enduring unconscionable effects from these tragic events in Ukraine. “We will continue to monitor and assess the situation as circumstances evolve.”

Pepsi, on the other hand, said it will suspend Russian sales of its Pepsi-Cola, 7UP and Mirinda brands, along with capital investments and all advertising and promotional activities.

“As a food and beverage company, now more than ever we must stay true to the humanitarian aspect of our business,” Pepsi CEO Ramon Laguarta wrote in a memo to employees viewed by CNBC.

McDonald’s also announced on Tuesday all 850 of its Russian restaurants would temporarily close. Until then, the fast food chain had stayed silent on the war, drawing stronger criticism than the handful of restaurant companies that condemned the invasion but kept their locations open.

A tea seller, identified only as Hamidu, has been arrested for allegedly killing one of his customers at Arepo, in the Obafemi Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State.

Acording to punch news, it was gathered that the victim, Musa, bought a cup of tea from Hamidu and paid N40 instead of the regular rate of N50.

Hamidu, in a bid to get the balance, resorted to violence, which started a fight between the two men.

The suspect reportedly punched Musa in his chest as the victim fell.

A leader of the Odua People’s Congress (New Era), Olayiwola Ogunsolu, told our correspondent that Musa gave up the ghost before he could get any help.

He said, “Last week Wednesday, we were at the Arepo under bridge area when we heard a noise around the Hausa community there.

“On getting to the spot, we saw that someone had died and when we enquired what happened, we were told that the tea seller there killed him over his refusal to pay N50 for a cup of tea. We immediately called the Warewa Police Station and when two policemen came from the station, the Hausa community resisted them.

“We called the DPO of Warewa Police Station and he sent reinforcement. The police later took the suspect away.”

A relative of the deceased, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Musa was punched over N10.

He said, “Musa went to buy a cup of tea but he had N40 instead of N50. This got the seller angry and they started fighting. The tea seller, who is not really well known under the bridge here though some people said his name is Hamidu, punched Musa in the chest. He fell and died. Some of our people intervened. The police came and took the tea seller away.”

The leader of the Hausa community in the area, Usman Shehu, said he was not aware of the incident.

“Such an incident would not have passed me by as the head of the Arewa community in this place,” he added.

The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, promised to share more news on this.

Reacting in his statement, Adegboruwa said, “The gory details of the cold-blooded murder of Miss Oluwabamise Ayanwole is too chilling to swallow. Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command on Monday have arrested the driver of a Bus Rapid Transit who drove murdered 22-year-old Oluwabamise Ayanwole.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Adekunle Ajisebutu, made this known in a chat, even as he confirmed that the dead body of the lady has been found.

“The driver of the BRT has been arrested,” Ajisebutu stated.

He also said the killers of Ayanwole, who got missing in transit while onboard the bus, would face justice.

According to the PPRO, the abductors dumped the remains of the lady on the Carter Bridge by Ogogoro Community.

It was learnt that Ayanwola got missing while returning to Ota from Ajah on February 26 when she boarded a BRT bus with number 240257 going to Oshodi at about 7pm at Chevron Bus-Stop.

It was also gathered that the victim worked as a Fashion Designer at Chevron Estate, Ajah spent her weekends in Ota, Ogun State, with her sister.

Sensing danger as the bus did not pick any other passenger at subsequent bus stops, Oluwabamise had engaged a friend using voice notes on her phone.

The voice notes showed that the bus driver said he liked Oluwabamise and asked for her name and other details.

She told her friend to pray for her as she became suspicious of the bus driver and in response, the friend told her to alight at Oworonsoki bus stop — before Oshodi bus stop.

Oluwabamise had also sent a video to her friend showing how dark it was in the bus and said, “There are three men and one woman in the bus. The woman is sitting at the back. That’s the number of the bus in case. Please pray for me.’’

That was the last that was heard from Oluwabamise, according to her mother.

07/03/2022

While we are still clamoring about no fuel and no electricity, the world bank has shared their predictions.

The Country Director, World Bank, Shubham Chaudhuri, says Nigeria’s decision to postpone the full deregulation of the downstream sector of the petroleum industry by 18 months may cost the country over N4tn in subsidy payments on petrol in 2022.

He said this when he led some executives of the bank on a courtesy visit to the head office of The PUNCH in Magboro, Ogun State on Thursday.

The World Bank country director, however, noted that while the World Bank could come up with advice on subsidy removal, its role was certainly not to dictate as it had no ability to do such.

Chaudhuri said, “With economics, really, you are not meant to make a political decision. What you are meant to do is to lay out what are the cons and consequences of different decisions.

“So that is what we are doing, we are just being very clear that this would come with a fiscal cost and the fiscal cost is the number, perhaps N4tn this year.”

He said despite the fact that the price of oil had gone up, the rise in global crude oil prices was not helping Nigeria that much.

Industry figures seen on Sunday showed that the price of Brent, the crude against which Nigeria’s oil is priced, was $118.11 per barrel at 5.06pm Nigerian time, as it traded at the same rate the preceding day.

On why the rising oil price was not helping Nigeria as anticipated, Chaudhuri said, “The reason is that the cost of the PMS subsidy is going up. So at $85 per barrel, the NNPC was projecting that the cost of the PMS subsidy will be around N180bn to N200bn per month. In January when crude oil prices had already gone up to $90, $93, it (subsidy) still went up to N250bn per month.

04/03/2022

Nigerian movie marketer, Kazim Adeoti, has broken the silence on his marriage to ace actress, Mercy Aigbe, as he opened up on how they got married.

This is as the couple graced the front cover of the March 2022 issue of Media Room Hub magazine, marking the first time Adeoti opened up on their quiet marriage.

Adeoti revealed that he and Mercy had been business partners for 10 years, and he had always noticed something special about her.

“Mercy has always been a business partner and I’ve always seen something very special. The first thing that got me attracted to her was that she was very open and truthful to me from the first transaction we had together,” Adeoti said.

He revealed that when he gave her money for movie production, the actress returned some part of the money that remained after the production. Adeoti noted that he had never experienced such in his dealing with movie production.

The movie marketer also noted that he advised Mercy against leaving her first “abusive” marriage with her former husband, Lanre Gentry.

According to Kazim, the actress wasn’t happy with his advice and that slowed their business relationship.

However, they reconnected after a very successful movie produced by Aigbe, which she sold to Adeoti.

After the success of the movie, Adeoti said he gave Aigbe some money and invited her for dinner; an act that rekindled their relationship and eventually led to their marriage.

He also affirmed that he was never friends with Lanre Gentry though they knew each other before the recent marriage.

04/03/2022

The Minister of Labour, Employment and Productivity, Dr Chris Ngige, has stated that the Federal Government does not have the funds to meet its obligations in the agreement signed with the Academic Staff Union of Universities.

Ngige said the government was considering a renegotiation of the terms of the agreement with ASUU, in the effort to end the ongoing strike by university lecturers.

The minister made this known while appearing on Politics Today, a current affairs programme on Channels Television monitored from Abuja on Thursday.

When asked if he agreed that the government had failed to fulfil its side of the agreement with ASUU, Ngige said no.

On when the conflict would end, the minister said, “I am hoping that ASUU should do the right thing and contact their members on the renegotiations that we have had in the last two weeks. First, the issue of earned academic allowances, we have agreed, giving a timeline to the NUC to go back to the old template used in working out the 2021 earned academic allowance – 10.8 per cent of personnel cost.“We want them to go back very quickly and use that same formula and get us what we are supposed to pay in 2022. That is agreed by everybody.”

On revitalisation of the universities, Ngige said “the amount is not very clear, what has been paid.” He said the actual amount paid is being determined.

On the release of N1.3tn between 2013 and 2018 to revitalise the universities, with N200bn released in 2013 and only N70bn released in the last seven years, the minister, who noted that government is a continuum, stated that the N1.3tn was promised by the Goodluck Jonathan-led administration. According to him, oil was selling at between $100 and $120 per barrel then, while the revenue of the federation was rich.

Does this means students will remain at home?

Today we start with the crazy things that are happening.

A customer, identified only as Blessing, has been arrested by the Lagos State Police Command for allegedly bathing a Point-of-Sale operator, Bisola Kolawole, with hot soup in the Ikorodu area of the state.

It was gathered that Blessing visited Kolawole’s shop on Igboolomu Road, Isawo-Agric, to buy N1,500 data. After payment, she could not, however, connect her phone to the Internet.

The situation was said to have degenerated into a scuffle as Blessing allegedly tore Kolawole’s clothes and cut her gold chain.

Kolawole, on Thursday, said she went to her customer’s house to demand her missing chain when Blessing bathed her with hot soup.

The Ogun State indigene said her breasts and chest peeled, adding that she was immediately rushed to the Ikorodu General Hospital for treatment.

The Abuja Bureau Chief of the Nigerian Tribune, Leon Usigbe, was attacked by suspected armed robbers at the Phase 4, Federal Secretariat junction, Three Arms Zone, of the Federal Capital Territory.

The robbers were said to have stabbed him multiple times and at different parts of his body.

The incident was said to have happened on Tuesday night.

A colleague of his, Lawrence Bajah, said Usigbe car had developed a fault around the area and he had alighted to place reflective triangle behind when he was attacked.

Bajah said the robbers took away his phones and other belongings.

He said, “The robbers, three in number, attacked and stabbed him in several parts of his body, living him with deep gashes on his right hand and backside.

“He had just left a meeting between former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and the Peoples Democratic Party House of Representatives Caucus hosted by the House Minority Leader, Ndudi Elemelu, at his Lobito Crescent, Wuse residence on Tuesday night when the incident happened.

A Kenyan woman has been charged to court for biting off her lover's ear during a fight over insufficient transport fare.

Zainab Ochero was said to have committed the act after Joseph Karanja gave her KSh 100 as transport back home.

At Kibera law courts on Tuesday, March 1, Ochero was charged with unlawfully causing serious injuries to Karanja.

She allegedly injured him at a bar where they were taking drinks at around 2am on February 21, at Kangemi, Nairobi.

The two had disagreed in an attempt to resolve their relationship issues touching on infidelity.

Mr. Karanja had reportedly called Ms Ochero to meet him at the bar in Kangemi to discuss their affair and she went but they disagreed and she left for her house in Kawangware.

He called her back hours later and she joined him again at the bar and they continued arguing over infidelity while taking drinks.

He accused her of having affairs with other men and an argument ensued as they continued imbibing drinks amid disputes.

After they were unable to agree, Ms Ochero asked Mr. Karanja to hire a bodaboda to take her home in Kawangware but he gave her Sh100.

Ms Ochero told police she insisted that Karanja hire a bodaboda rider to take her home but Karanja allegedly started insulting her.

She also told cops that she was totally drunk and only remembers waking up at Kangemi police station later the same day.

Karanja carried his ear to a hospital but his attempts to have it sewn back turned futile after doctors said a reconstruction surgery could not be done as the ear could not function.

She was released on a bond of Sh300, 000.

Fuel stations are not smiling neither are the queue reducing.

The cost of transportation is on the increase across the country following the hike in the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit, popularly called petrol, in fillings stations in states.

Motorists still besieged the few filling stations that dispensed PMS in Abuja and neighbouring Nasarawa and Niger states on Tuesday, as many outlets in Nasarawa and other states sold the commodity at N200/litre and above.

This was in contrast to the Federal Government’s approved pump price of N162-N165/litre. In Abuja, black marketers freely sold petrol at N400/litre and above.

The National Public Relations Officer, Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, Chief Ukadike Chinedu, told one of our correspondents that the price of petrol in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, was above N200/litre in filling stations.

“The queues in Port Harcourt are clearing out and filling stations sell at N200 and above for a litre of petrol,” he said.

In Ilorin, Kwara State, the transportation situation grew worse on Tuesday, as petrol scarcity continued.

Many petrol stations locked their gates, as only a few outlets, such as Bovas and the NNPC  dispensed petrol to motorists at the approved price of N162/litre amidst long queues.

How have you been, without fuel? If you have been buying, how is the struggle? Let us know in the comment section.
