Today’s start of power generation in marks a key milestone. It reached this stage in tandem with construction progress of early generation. It has proved the water flows downstream has not been interrupted & flows regularly as hydropower doesn’t consume water
Ethiopia’s approach to filling & operation of GERD is crafted based on the bounds of agreed Declaration of Principles (DoP) & subsequently negotiated rules & guidelines among the downstream countries. On completion, it similarly provides water bank for: regular renewable power generation in Ethiopia, enhanced power generation in downstream countries in existing dams. safeguard against flood & drought and highly improved water management not wastage.
GERD should be the source of cooperation, not conflict, for shared prosperity not bringing scarcity, regional integration not competition, a true symbol of achieving multiple goals of SDG like goal 6 on water, goal 7 on energy, goal 13 on climate change and above all goal 1 on poverty. At the center of this is the poor Millions of People of Ethiopia without access to electricity and potentially neighbouring countries who are currently connected to Ethiopia’s Grid.
Ethiopia honestly cares not only it’s benefits but also the well-being of brothers & sisters sharing the Nile River!. Our call is let us use our God given resources judiciously & realize the win win for all.

H.E. Demeke Mekonnen, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia met today (August 26) with Ambassadors of the member states of the United Nations Security Council.

Mr. Demeke called on the ambassadors to reject the draft resolution submitted by Tunisia on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam.

Present at the meeting, Dr. Sileshi Bekele, Minister of Water, Irrigation, and Energy of Ethiopia, briefed the ambassadors on the status of the construction of the Renaissance Dam and the content of the draft resolution submitted to the Security Council by Tunisia.

He said the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam is a development project and should not be considered by the Security Council.

Recalling that the case was referred to the Security Council in July 2021, he said a direction was set for the three countries to continue the tripartite talks held by the African Union and reach a solution.

He said that it is inappropriate for Tunisia to refer back the resolution to the Council since it violates Ethiopia's right to use its natural resources and maliciously tries to advance the unjust interests of the downstream countries.

He called on Sudan and Egypt to abandon the status quo and the so-called “historical right” over the Nile River basin and refrain from unnecessarily politicizing and internationalizing the matter.

The Minister urged the international community to influence the downstream states to continue participating in the AU-led negotiation and sign and ratify the Comprehensive Framework Agreement.

He added that the Democratic Republic of the Congo is preparing to incorporate the ideas of the three countries and reach an agreement that will benefit all parties.

Finally, Mr. Demeke said Ethiopia is committed to reaching an agreement in the trilateral talks to be held under the auspices of the African Union and called on the member states to reject the draft resolution submitted to the Council by Tunisia.

Ethiopia rejects the unwelcome meddling by the League of Arab States on the matter of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) following the League’s submission of a letter to the UN Security Council and UN General Assembly to intervene in the matter.

The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia, H.E. Demeke Mekonnnen sent a letter to the president of the UNSC on Monday (July 05) stating that his country is disappointed by the Arab League for addressing the UN on a matter that does not fall within its purview.

The League of Arab States has a reputation for its unfettered and unconditional support to any claim Egypt has presented on the issue of the Nile, the letter adds.

The approach followed by the League risks undermining the friendly and cooperative relations between AU and the Arab League since the trilateral negotiation on the GERD is underway under the auspices of the African Union (AU), the letter adds.

The letter notes that the AU, as a common organization for Ethiopia, Egypt, and Sudan, offers the tripartite a platform to negotiate and reach a win-win outcome guided by the conviction of finding “African solutions to Africa's challenges.”

The letter further states that Ethiopia is engaging in the trilateral negotiations in good faith and continuing its utmost commitment to make the AU-led process a success and calls on the two lower riparian countries of the Nile to remain faithful to the ongoing African Union-led negotiation.

Ethiopia also reiterates its request for the international community to encourage Egypt and Sudan to abide by the accepted principles of international law on the utilization of transboundary water resources.
