DR LINDA AYADE CELEBRATES THE GIRL-CHILD TO MARK THE INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE GIRL-CHILD 2021

11th of October has been observed worldwide as the International Day of the Girl-Child since 2012 following a resolution of the United Nations General Assembly in December, 2011.

The wife of the Governor of Cross River State, Her Excellency, Dr. Linda Ayade, yesterday celebrated this year’s International Day of the Girl-Child at Government Girls’ Secondary School, Big Qua Town, Calabar with her NGO, the Mediatrix Development Foundation (MDF), a celebration that calls attention to the need to address the challenges faced by girls and to promote girls’ empowerment and the fulfilment of their human rights.

This year’s theme “Digital Generation, Our Generation” is meant to draw attention to the gender digital divide in connectivity that exist in this digital age, and to encourage more girls to take a step into the constantly growing world of technology.

Speaking while addressing the girls at the event, Dr Linda Ayade, said the girl-child is very important that is why the united nation has set aside a whole day every year to celebrate her, and because of the how important the girl-child is to her, that is why her foundation, the Mediatrix Development Foundation (MDF) in conjunction with the Office of Wife of Governor (OWOG) was at Government Secondary School, Big Qua Town to celebrate the girl-child in Cross River State, just to express the love they have for the girl child and as future women. She charged the girls to come up with positive resolutions that will help them grow into great leaders of tomorrow as they are the digital generation that the theme of this year’s celebration is talking about.

Dr. Ayade said the presentations that were earlier given by the resource persons were to help guide the girls to become that important digital girl of tomorrow and nothing less. She advised them to avoid cultism, pre-marital s*x and other things that constitute distractions that could hinder them from achieving their purpose in life.

She encouraged the girls to be free to reach out to her through MDF in case of any distress they may be passing through, and their problems will be handled with confidentiality. She thanked the students, principal and staff of the school for making the event possible.

Earlier in her opening remarks, the principal of the school, Mrs. Arit Ota Onaga expressed her excitement to be celebrating the International Day of the Girl-Child with Dr. Linda Ayade and the MDF Team.

Mrs. Onaga said the girl-child is never given opportunity in the African society where we belong even though all children are a gift from God. She said every child is a child, but it is what you put into the child that makes that child what he or she will become, using herself as an example, she said despite being a girl-child she has grown to become the Principal of GGSS, Big Qua, stressing that girls can become anything in this life. She thanked Dr. Linda Ayade for choosing her school to celebrate the day, and wished everyone a happy day.

While giving his address the Chief Operating Officer of MDF, Mr. Jeff Adamade said the day was for the celebration of the girl-child, and outlined MDF’s four Thematic Areas of interventions to include; Health, Rights and Justice, Education and Volunteering and lastly Sustainable Livelihood. He said the event of the day cuts across all the four thematic areas of MDF because it affects the girl-child; Adamade said MDF has gone through the length and breadth of Cross River State through their school-based interventions.

In Her Excellency’s entourage were the Special Adviser on Finance and Administration, OWOG, Mrs. Philo Inyang, the Special Adviser on Women Affairs, Surveyor (Dr.) Gertrude Nanja Njah, the Special Adviser on Events, OWOG, Hon. Torita Odey, amongst others.

THE WORLD IS EXPERIECING ITS BIGGEST REFUGEE CRISIS SINCE WORLD WAR II
– Dr. Linda Ayade
The wife of the Governor of Cross River State, Her Excellency Dr. Linda Ayada, LKSJi, was a special guest at a one day workshop organised by Children of Rural Africa, Nigeria (CORAFrica) with the theme “Agro-Business and Education Opportunities” for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaces Persons yesterday 13th September at Transcorp Hotels, Calabar.
In her address, Dr. Linda Ayade, who was ably represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Barr. Tina Banku Agbor, said that the world was experiencing its biggest refugee crisis since the Second World War as a staggering 22 million people are forcibly displaced by war and persecutions. Drawing reference from neighbouring Cameroon crisis and the effect it is having on Cross River and neighbouring states, Dr. Ayade said apart from being a humanitarian and legal obligation, welcoming refugees taps into the resourcefulness of some of them that are very creative.
The Governor’s wife outlined some of the work her NGO, the Mediatrix Development Foundation had done with refugees between 2017 to 2021 to include training and set up of businesses for about one thousand and eight hundred and fifteen (1815) refugees with support from UNHCR and another one (100) refugees in host communities around the state with support from Julia Taft Refugee Fund.
She commended CORAfrica for organising the workshop and express her happiness to be a part of it while assuring that she will continue to work together with stakeholders for the good of the refugees.
While delivering his welcome address, the founder and CEO of CORAfrica, Rev. Fr. (Dr.) Peter Obele Abue said the world was passing through a historical moment marked with alarming frustrations from wars, terrorism, kidnapping, and insecurity generally and as a result life as we know it will never be the same again. He therefore called for not only a cautious lifestyle but also to care more for the vulnerable in our society.
Fr. Obele said CORAfrica was committed to helping vulnerable children now more than ever and said the workshop was an indication that they are poised to relive their vision of building vibrant and healthy rural communities where every child can prosper and youth find opportunities to grow and thrive locally. He congratulated Dr. Linda Ayade for the work she is doing with the refugees in the state.
In his goodwill message the National Program Director, Dr. Jimoh Odunayo said the Corona Virus pandemic took a negative toll on the economic activities of many and most of the affected are the refugees, internally displaced persons, youths and women in Africa.
Dr. Jimoh said CORAfrica was providing solidarity to poor households; mostly with educationally disadvantaged children having poor access to health care facilities and living in degraded communities, without any tangible form of livelihood that will create hope of a better tomorrow. He said they offer support through CORAfrica’s Africa Community Education Centers and boosting economic empowerments among our youths and women mostly from Cameroonian Refugees settlement and poor household in the communities by giving micro credits to help them succeed in their various vocations.
Highlights of the event were keynote address by Prof. Lateef Sanni, presentations by the Commissioner for Agric, Hon. Ntufam Okon Okona, DG, SEMA, Mr. Prince DG, Migration Control Agency, Mr. Mike Abuo, Prof. Eke-Ejiofor amongst others.

WEEKEND FILE: DR LINDA AYADE DISAPPROVES UNDERAGE HAWKING.

Over the weekend while attending the traditional marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Christian and Kate Ugkpoji Paul, visiting family members and touring the German Hospital, currently under construction in Obudu, the wife of the Governor of Cross River State, Her Excellency, Dr Linda Ayade met two underage children hawking Okro on the busy newly constructed expressway. Moved with compassion, she stopped the convoy, called on the children and bought all their stock with extra gift of cash then sent the children home.

The governor's wife was shocked at the way the society flagrantly breaks Child Rights Laws which clearly prohibit underage hawking and protect children from various abuses being meted out to them.

Later while attending the wedding of Mr. and Mrs. Christian and Kate Ugkpoji Paul, Dr. Linda Ayade wished the couple well in their marriage and advised them to live in love and understanding, avoiding the third party syndrome.
She was accompanied by some distinguished women of Cross River State, including the Chairman of Calabar South, Hon. (Mrs.) Esther Bassey; the Chairman of Biase, Hon. (Mrs.) Ada Charles; a Special Adviser in the Office of the Wife of the Governor, Mrs. Philomena Inyang and several wives of Chairmen.

While Dr Linda Ayade was inspecting progress of work at the site of the German Specialist Hospital currently under construction in Obudu, the site engineer, Mr. Collins with CIBA Construction took time out to take us on a guided tour of the facilities by section and I was amazed at the vision of the brain behind the hospital, the hospital when fully operation would be world class, the sections includes the general waiting area, the admin section, drug dispensary, male and female medical wards, radiology section, morgue, pediatrics and obstetrician unit, a big restaurant, massive laundry space, and dental unit amongst others while the L-shape building facing the main road houses the wards (general wards, cardiology ward, orology ward, orthopedic ward and private wards), consulting rooms and treatment offices, it was evidently also noticeable that to meet international standards some sections were being redesign, portioned and reconstructed.

With passion in her eyes Dr. Ayade said she was already fighting gender-based violence having facilitated the prosecution of s*x offenders and carried out several advocacies to schools, markets, communities, amongst others to educate the people on how to prevent SGBV and the need to speak up when it occurs. She expressed her readiness to partner with the group as she hailed their activities describing them as laudable.

Briefing Dr Linda Ayade on the purpose of their visit, the Country Director, Ms. Ulla Elisabeth Mueller said they were there to first of all seek partnership with her on the NGO level for programme implementation and secondly to solicit her support to use her office as wife of Governor to drive for policies that will enable UNFPA carry out its mandate which is to work in partnership with the Government of Nigeria to implement development activities that provide universal access to s*xual and reproductive health, promote reproductive rights, reduce maternal mortality and accelerates progress towards the achievement of the ICPD declaration.
She revealed that Nigeria has the highest prevalence of Vesico Vaginal Fistula (VVF) in the world and that is why UNFPA is establishing VVF centers in Nigeria, one of which is located in Cross River State.

In her goodwill message the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Betta Edu thanked UNFPA for their contribution to the development strides the state has made in providing
s*xual and reproductive health, in the provision of free surgeries for Vesico Vaginal Fistula (VVF) repairs and treatment in the state at the VVF Centre, General Hospital, Ogoja, and other activities to promote reproductive rights, reduce maternal mortality.

Dr. Betta said in terms of partnership their quest to collaborate with Dr. Linda Ayade were not misplaced as her NGO, MDF were already carrying out some of the activities of UNFPA and have the experience and manpower to implement their activities.

DR. AYADE LEADS WOMEN TO APC IN SUPPORT OF HUSBAND

Wife of Cross River State Governor, Dr. (Mrs.) Linda Ayade has led the women of Cross River State in Mega Rally in support of her husband, Senator (Prof.) Ben Ayade in the All Progressives Party (APC).

The rally which started with a road walk from the Millenium Park (11-11roundabout) early hours of the day had CRS women in their various colours turn out enmasse to participate in the exercise led by the Governor’s wife.

Speaking in Calabar during the rally at the Millennium Park, Dr. Ayade expressed appreciation to all the women of CRS for their support to the Governor, describing them as resilient women of honour who are never tired, ready to weather the storm, inspite of the rain, adding that the women of CRS are very dear to her.

She used the occasion to present the women of CRS to the Governor and informed him that the women have come out in their colours to express their gratitude to him for all that he has done for them, having a great number of women in leadership positions in his administration, as well as to rally support for him, while describing Senator Ayade as a man with a compassionate and tender heart, who is always thinking good about the state and trying to see how he can change the narrative of CRS, especially in the area of unemployment and has therefore reduced the number of youths in the streets of CRS.

According to her, Senator Ben Ayade has been a job creator in his own capacity long before he came into politics which led to his plan to construct a super highway and deep seaport in order to create job opportunities for Cross Riverians, adding that being a dynamic and wisdom-filled governor, her husband thought it wise, in the immediate interim, to expand the government in order to give people a sense of belonging and also to make a way for them to have food on their tables, as well as build industries across the state in each local government area.

Dr. Ayade lamented the situation, where there is currently no CRS woman at the national assembly and prayed God to create an opportunity for that seat to be filled.

Responding to the issue raised by his wife on the absence of a CRS woman at the National Assembly, the Governor, who was present at the rally, promised the women that they will have a female representative at the national assembly, adding that, for coming out to honour them, especially his wife, God will also honour all the women of CRS, while thanking them for their support.

In the same vein, the State Deputy Governor, Prof. Ivara Esu, thanked the women of CRS for “seeing a good thing and following that good thing”. He expressed thanks to Dr. Ayade for all that she is doing for the women of CRS, describing her as prayer warrior and a pillar of support, while thanking the women for their prayers and support. Also speaking, the Speaker, CRSHA, Rt. Hon. Eteng Williams, commended the women for their initiative in organizing a rally in support of the Governor and urged them to continue to support him to the end.

In her remarks, the Secretary to the State Government, Barr. Tina Agbor used the occasion to thank Dr. Linda Ayade for her love and support to the women of CRS, describing her as the first lady of its kind, while also thanking her husband, Senator Ayade for instilling in Cross Riverians the spirit of enterprise, which is demonstrated in the number of industries in the state.

In their remarks, the Commissioner for Local Government Affairs and Chairman, Central Planning Committee for the One million match, rally, Hon. Stella Odey Ekpo and the President of Cross River Women Emancipation Initiative (CROWEI) and Vice Chairman, Bakassi LGA, Eti-Eka (Mrs) Lawrencia Ita, said that the women of CRS have demonstrated their love and support for Senator Ben Ayade and his dear wife Linda while thanking the Governor for giving CRS women the voice, as well as creating a veritable platform for women in the state in appointing women into various leadership positions in his administration and for employing many youths in the state.

Also present at the rally were members of the state House of Assembly, Executive Council members, political appointees, women groups, amongst others.

Highlights included; road walk, rally, free speeches, goodwill messages from representatives of the south, Barr. (Mrs.) RoseMary Archibong, central, Barr. (Mrs.) Mary Ekpere and northern senatorial district, Mrs. Regina Anyogor, amongst others.
