BAYLOR UNIVERSITY PUBLISHES LARGEST STUDY EVER ON MASSAGE THERAPY USE

This month's Teaching Tip:
Practicing Feedback is Critical to Learning

Getting feedback on hands-on skills and treatment planning is critical to the new practitioner's development. But getting quality feedback can’t happen without teaching the student-receiver how to describe their experience. One way to help them understand what it takes to facilitate the learning process is to practice being present in their own body experience. They must practice this, in order to give good feedback. And they must practice giving feedback over and over, to refine their communication skills.

When doing classroom trades, try this activity:

Before the student-practitioners begin their practice treatments, have the receiving students get on the table, close their eyes, and do a body scan.

Ask them to notice what they are feeling and what parts of their body are getting most of their attention right now.

Ask them to describe to their student-practitioner what they are experiencing.

Then, once the treatment starts, have them pause every 10-minutes and describe what they are experiencing at that moment.

At the end of the treatment, have them do another body scan and describe what has changed.

Students who practice describing their experiences to their student-practitioner, are becoming better communicators and better practitioners themselves. The student-practitioner better understands their effects on the body they are touching. And the student-receiver is learning how to help their future clients give them feedback on their treatments as well.
