We were getting a little worried about the Live Action Shorts, but one has recently become available to watch online. "An Irish Goodbye" is a black comedy about two brothers on a farm in Northern Ireland who set out to complete their mother's bucket list. It recently won the BAFTA and is quite enjoyable. The short noms are excellent this year, and fortunately many of them are available online.

The short animation is "My Year of Dicks" is a funny and poignant story of teenage sexuality by Sara Gunnarsdottir and written by Pamela Ribbon. Based in the 1990s, it's about a 15 year old (also named Pam...) who is trying to figure out how she should lose her virginity. Told in chapters and using different animation styles, it's a fun film and one of our favourites. This link is limited and will likely disappear before March, so good to catch it now. And if you have time, we suggest watching the 5 minute behind the scenes to see how it all came together. Film link, behind the scenes doc and lots of other extras are all at the films website.

We caught “Triangle of Sadness” earlier this week at VIFF. It is one of the most hilarious satires to come out in a long time. An excellent commentary on wealth, privilege, status and how fragile the balance of power is. We loved this movie and are confident this will be up for Best International Feature (Rueben Ostlund’s previous features “Force Majeure” and “The Square” both were) and possibly a best director nod for Ostlund himself. This film is a rollercoaster ride you don’t want to miss.

And so it begins…. With South Korea’s “Decision To Leave”. Directed by Park Chan-wook, who won Best Director at Cannes, it’s a stylish romance noir and South Korea’s official entry for Best International feature at the upcoming Academy Awards. We were excited to see on one of the first nights at VIFF. I guess we will see if it get a nom in January (it will).

The nominations will be announced by Tracee Ellis Ross and Leslie Jordan, but we thought you might like this little throw back to when Karl Malden and Kathleen Turner announced the noms 30 years ago.
