For me he was Jackie Robinson
For me he was James Brown
For me he was my first black super hero.
He didn’t make jokes about the disfunctionality of black culture to get famous.
I mourned Kobe’s death because I realized that a father and a daughter no matter who they are including the other passengers on the helicopter couldn’t run from the reality that Superman’s cape means nothing in the face of death. To die feeling helpless at any given moment.
I mourn Chadwick because he was my third hero behind my dad and Muhammad Ali.
I put him in the rankings of a man that stood for what he believed even when he knew it would cost him everything, because he stole nothing from me.
He didn’t run from me like tiger
He wasn’t as quiet, neutral, and expensive as Jordan
He wasn’t as angry, and condescending as Oprah.
For me he held his head high as he showed me what was possible and didn’t fold.
He humbled himself to make Movies like “A Message From The King.” On Netflix so I didn’t have to pay $4.99 when I wanted to see him display his talents
For me he made a commercial for the NBA about how influential Kobe was on his life, while fighting cancer.
For me.... I hope we don’t let that energy die with him
