I never got the chance to tell you about my film, Merick.

It embodies you- your courage in life, your joy in hardship, the magic and wonder you saw in all things living. You, my heart, are bioluminescence, you are living light even after death.

This film is now yours. We hope to make you proud.

My dear friend, Merick, I miss the heck out of you.

Light pollution affects not only our ability to experience the night sky (and bioluminescence); but it can affect our health, make for a less safe environment, waste money, and energy, and devastate wildlife!

We’ve heard a lot in the last couple of days about how the heat wave has been affecting our waterways’ ecosystems. Sealife being boiled alive along the shores, water grasses scorching in the sun, migration patterns being confused by storms and warmer waters. The climate crisis can not be ignored.

Continuing our conversation about light pollution, did you know that certain types of light are more polluting than others? Tucson, Arizona, for example, has drastically reduced their light pollution after swapping all of their street lights to LED lights. Just another example of small, easy steps communities and individuals can take to reduce light pollution!

To witness the wonder of the beautiful stars and galaxies, we must reduce light pollution as much as possible! Studies estimate that over 80% of people live under light-polluted skies. Light pollution interferes with the rythms of the natural world, from our sleep patterns to bioluminescent firefly communication. We hope to bring your attention to the environmental issue of light pollution in Maine and elsewhere—when you see the Castine night and bioluminescent dinoflagellates, you will understand why the darkness must be preserved!

Here today with more bioluminescence fun facts: Another organism that can illuminate are fungi! There are 71 known species of bioluminescent fungi, a few of which can be found in Maine including the honey mushroom, Armillaria Mellea. Bioluminescent fungi can often be seen in soil or on trees, and the primary purpose for their light is to attract insects. In turn, the insects distribute the mushrooms spores! https://www.inaturalist.org/guide_taxa/517498

Check out this amazing photo of bioluminescent dinoflagellates , taken by ! The dinoflagellates are single-celled organisms, glowing through a photosynthetic reaction between oxygen and luciferase. The reason for their bioluminescence isn’t known, but it is most likely a way to scare off or confuse predators !
