Medical Advances! My knee(s) are busted everyone. Like need surgery busted. When I had the first one fixed at age 18 it was a brutal and miserable recovery. I am promised that now, some years later, the surgery for the other knee is much better. While the recovery will still be so long, it hopefully won't be as hard. So today I am grateful for medical advances that make all of this possible.

Central Air Conditioning. I don't have it. I have a 100 year old house with no ducts and lots of other things to fix first. When I go anywhere that does have it though, I am so incredibly grateful. This heat wave is trying to break me and I'm hear for all of the central AC.

Dating shows, the sillier the better. I don't really have a good reason to love these shows. I just do. The drama. The nonsense. The cringe. The possibility for love. I want it all.

The privilege of taking vacations. I didn't get to take a lot of vacations as a kid and it was something that I always felt ... less than about. I am so grateful to 1) have a partner who values travel as much as I do, and 2) have the capacity to actually take those travels together. It is a joy and a privilege.

We are very lucky to live where we live and one of the main reasons is because of the town pool. I was never a member of a pool growing up and it is such a treat at the end of a long week to be able to head to the pool for a quick swim. Even more fun when a little storm goes through and the pool clears out.

How are you kicking off the weekend?

I love hydrangeas. I can barely spell them. I certainly can’t grow them, but I can’t resist taking a picture of them whenever I see them. Especially blue ones. I don’t know what happened during a former life or my childhood, but it must have been something good, because it had made me love these flowers. 🩵

About 7 or 8 years ago, I realized our neighboring town had what looked like to be a fantastic 4th of July parade. I always forgot so I put a reminder in my calendar for the following year. Now it’s a family tradition. There’s music. Candy thrown from floats. Patriotism. And when necessary, dissent.

What is your favorite 4th of July tradition?

It’s no secret that I love parks and one of my favorites is Central Park. Not just because objectively it’s a great park, but also, and perhaps more importantly, because it pops up in the middle of a very bustling city. No matter the time of year it provides an amazing view of respite from the outside world.

What are you celebrating today?

Last night I was lucky enough to attend our 25th high school reunion. The first part of the evening we all acted like the real grown ups that we are, but by the second half of the evening it seemed that we really were still in high school. There is something really special about reuniting with people who knew you when you were young, to remind you how much fun it is to have fun. 🤩

We accidentally had a week without summer camp. It was hard. I am so grateful for summer camps, camp counselors, people with so much energy and excitement who fill my kids days with magic. I am so grateful for camp, and the privilege of being able to send my kids to camp. It is truly life changing for all of us.

I am grateful for friends who love my kids as if they are family. For people who continue to show up for me in my life, whether I ask them to or not. I am thankful for the people who are like backup parents to my kids. The people that check in and ensure that all is well or as well as it can be. For trips to town, rides to practices, swims, BBQs and hangouts. I love the village I am building and I am so grateful for it.

I am grateful for the first sip of coffee each morning. There are a million reasons for that gratitude. Not only do I truly love coffee, I love the ritual of making coffee. The quiet I try to get in before the house is up and chaotic. The way that steam comes off the cup. The memories from each mug (we buy them on vacation) - so where we bought it, what we were doing, how much fun we had. There are so many good memories, feelings, thoughts, connections with coffee. I am thankful for all of them.

I am grateful for all the weirdness in the world. The way that people express themselves, the bizarre quirks we all have, the things that add color to our lives. I love an unexpected conversation that leaves me thinking, a squirrel lamp in the living room, a funny pair of socks. Life is too short to waste it hiding your weird. Let it all out.
