Ben Roberts-Smith resigns from Seven after losing defamation fight against Nine ( Amanda Meade for The Guardian)

Seven’s chief executive thanked Roberts-Smith for his commitment to network and wished former soldier ‘all the best’

Ben Roberts-Smith VC has resigned from Seven West Media a day after a judge found he murdered unarmed civilians while serving in the military in Afghanistan.

The finding was made in the context of a civil case, where several newspapers successfully defended a defamation claim brought by Roberts-Smith by arguing what they had written about the former soldier was true.

The billionaire chairman of Seven, Kerry Stokes, financed Roberts-Smith’s legal costs in the high-profile trial after appointing him general manager of Seven Queensland in 2015.

The managing director and chief executive officer of Seven, James Warburton, told staff on Friday that Roberts-Smith has offered his resignation.

“As you’re all aware, the judgment in the defamation case was handed down yesterday,” Warburton said in an email seen by Guardian Australia.

“Ben has been on leave whilst the case was running, and today has offered his resignation, which we have accepted. We thank Ben for his commitment to Seven and wish him all the best.”

The ex-soldier stood aside from his job in Queensland in 2021 to focus on the trial.

He was supported in court by the network’s commercial director, Bruce McWilliam, who attended court and gave evidence.

On Thursday, Stokes said he had not spoken to Roberts-Smith but “the judgment does not accord with the man I know”.

“I know this will be particularly hard for Ben, who has always maintained his innocence,” Stokes said after the verdict. “That his fellow soldiers have disagreed with each other, this outcome will be the source of additional grief.”

Stokes had backed Roberts-Smith financially and publicly, insisting his employee was innocent as recently as last year.

At Seven West Media’s annual general meeting, Stokes said:“Ben Roberts-Smith is innocent and deserves legal representation and that scumbag journalists should be held to account. And quote me on that.”

During the defamation trial, one of the SAS witnesses for Roberts-Smith told the court Seven was paying their legal fees, which was at odds with Seven’s claim that the soldier’s evidence about the source of the payments was “not correct”.

A Seven spokesperson later clarified the witness fees were being “reimbursed” by another arm of the Stokes empire.

“The fees were reimbursed by Ace [Australian Capital Equity], the chair’s private company,” the spokesperson said. “The chairman felt it was unfair that soldiers were being brought before the inquiry without representation.”

The court heard that the request for reimbursement was not made to Stokes’s private company until after the evidence about legal financing was revealed in court.

Roberts-Smith took out a loan, believed to be $2m, from Stokes to fund his defamation case. He now appears almost certain to lose his Victoria Cross medal that he surrendered as collateral.

Nine investigative reporter Nick McKenzie on Thursday criticised Stokes for bankrolling Roberts-Smith. “This is a media proprietor who should believe in journalism, yet he was waging a huge war against investigative journalism,” McKenzie said.

Seems like we have a lot of people out there who think they have a PHD in Consumer Law but they cannot do basic maths.🙄
Just because there is sign that says a certain price does NOT always mean you get it at that price! Sometimes signs are placed incorrectly. If you see a sign for apples above the avocados clearly that is a mistake and the customer is not entitled to the discount.
If you cannot work out what the original price was, if there is now a sale for 40% off the original price and something is now $13.00, then you have no right to act like an elitist.

There are calls for austerity measures to return in order to curb inflation. We know what austerity cuts do. Cutting back on government spending is NOT the answer.

To do right by Australians struggling with the rising cost of living, the government must resist all its instincts and commit to responsible budget rules.

This is great news!! 👏

As a customer, I was sick of being asked every time I came in to the store to sign up!
If I want to get a credit card I'll go to my bank.
The article mentions that they have a new financial partner lined up? 🙄
They better not be making the staff sell another credit card! 😠
I also know the pressure and bullying DJs put on the staff to sell credit. It's disgusting.
People have been sacked for not being able to sign customers up.
As a company they should NOT be having staff on the shop floor selling credit. They are a department store NOT a bank.
The only people who should be selling credit are maybe the staff at the concierge desk who must have formal qualifications to sell credit.

The co-branded credit cards will continue to be accepted in store and online.

Maybe the chickens are finally coming home to roost?
I worked at DJs for almost a decade. When I started to work there, they had JUST introduced the Amex Card.
It was made very clear from the start that signing up customers to the Amex card was a KPI.
It was a KPI that had to be achieved in order to keep your job.
Every month you had to sign up to around 3 people to the card.
If you did not sign people up to the card you were called into the office, a few months of not signing people up and your employment was threatened. You were made to feel like a bad worker.
If you did not sign people up you were turned down for promotions and some managers were demoted.
In my time with DJs I saw some of my colleagues get so desperate that they would not inform customers of the annual fee, some would also say it was a loyalty card. They did this because they were sick of management pulling them up.
DJs would have these sales where customers would have to use the Amex card to get the discount and of course you had those customers who struggled financially but really wanted the discount and this desperation was exploited.

This article only covers the tip of the iceberg.

Woolworths/DJs need to also be investigated.

The corporate regulator is taking legal action against American Express for the way it distributed a David Jones credit card which many customers mistook for a loyalty...

To the lady who made us reopen the store, just so you could do some shopping and get your free 'goody bag', you are the type of person who needs to be put in their place!
But I guess you never will be because you are a manipulative bully and will always chuck a painful tantrum until the person on the recieving end has had enough and gives in because they are sick of your tirade.
You ring up the store, insist, no bully us into putting a goody bag on hold. (We don't hold GWPs) .
We inform you of our closing time.
You then ring us a few more times throughout the day telling us you are going to be late and may arrive after hours.
We again inform you of our closing time.
Then you call 2 mins before closing telling us that you are going to arrive soon.
We wait till about 1 minute after 5pm, (our closing time) and we close the doors.
5 minutes past 5pm you decide that you still have the right to come in and shop.
You knock on the door, then call the store up to 5 TIMES.
So we try to reason with you, we even come up with a creative solution that will still allow you to get the goody bag but you don't accept it!
You scream at the staff member and go on about how you were not told that we close at 5. You inform us that you have kids with disabilities and how you are a full time carer etc.
What does that have to do with the fact that you are acting like a bully?
Don't use your childrens circumstances to get what you want.
Your circumstances does not entitle you to act like a bully, have the red carpet rolled out and entitle you to a different set of rules.
The only reason why we ended up letting you into the store after hours was because you kept screaming, ranting, blowing up the store phones and you threatened to destroy us through social media.
When we let you into the store, we explained that we don't normally do this and you kept saying that you knew....
You also kept apologising!!
F*** off!
You should not have acted in such a way in the first place.
Why couldn't you and why wouldn't you accept that maybe you were not meant to get the bag?
You think that your opportunity to get the bag is more important than my time off the clock?
People like you are narscissictic POS. You don't give a f*** about anything or anyone but yourself.

The silly/festive/holiday season has officially commenced. For a lot of people this is an exciting time of the year. You are on holidays, you have quite a few days off and are in that relaxed mode.

You might be hosting Xmas lunch and are stressing about getting everything done. You might have a long way to travel and be feeling a bit anxious about the traffic. You may not have done your Xmas shopping and be feeling a little worried about the upcoming deadlines.

This is stressful.

You might be having your first Xmas without someone you love.

That is tough and will be tough.

You might be going through all the above.

I appreciate it all, I really do.

Please be kind during this silly season. Don't verbally abuse that person at the register when the item you are wanting to purchase is not discounted or on sale. Instead RESPECTFULLY ask for clarification.
If the answer is not what you want to hear, don't act like you have a masters degree in consumer law. Its up to you whether you buy it or not.

You may have been waiting to be served for 15 minutes in a shoe department but please don't yell at the young woman who has just walked into that department. She may have just walked back from another department where she has received verbal abuse.
Instead KINDLY ask her for assistance when she gets the chance.

There might be a burning question you need to ask but please don't butt in to another conversation.

I know that you might be time poor or perhaps have lost track of time but don't expect cheerful, quality, devoted customer service FIVE MINUTES before the store closes.

Don't expect that just because you came in minutes before the store closes the staff are going to stay back behind after closing the store and serve you in their own time.

If the store closes at 5pm then the staff finish at 5pm; they don't get paid after the store closes. Unless, of course you want to pay the staff member for that time.

Staff are NOT slaves or robots. They also have lives and homes to go to.

If the service is really slow or a staff member is rude or incompetent, please just ask for the manager or the manager's email. Don't put up a raving/ranting Google review.

If there is a product you are after and it's not in stock, a good staff member will always try to offer an alternative. Please don't insist that they look out the back, they want to hit their own sales target and potentially make commission. If the product was out the back they would have got it for you.
But if you insist.....they will go ahead and enjoy a five minute breather out the back at your expense.

If you need to return something, review the returns policy. If your sitiation is going to go against that policy, and you still feel you need to return the item, nicely ask for the manager straight away; this will save any arguing/back and forth.

Finally, if you find that the bathrooms are a mess, don't abuse the cleaner, instead go to the concierge and KINDLY report it.

Staff in the retail, hospitality, pharmacuetical, healthcare, transport and travel sectors DON'T have time off in this period. They are working extra days with increased hours. They are spending less time with their partners, friends and family and are both mentally and emotionally drained.

With this in mind, please spare a thought and be kind this holiday/festive/silly season.

In fact, be kind all the time.

IF, the government were to bring back the Baby Bonus, it would need to be adjusted to for the current times we live in.
Make the bonus $10K to adjust to cost of living.
(Paid in 5 installments of $2K)
There would also need to be limitations.
For example, it would need to be only for a limited time, say 5 years.
For only 1 child per mother (twins etc exception), the mother can only claim the bonus once.
The mother must be 18+, a Permanent Resident or Australian Citizen, must be working and earning a minimum of $15K pa but max of $80K. Partner income would also have to be factored in.

Before I get the pile on,

I support an increase in the Jobseeker Allowance to $88 per day.
I am glad the Cashless Debit Card has been abolished.
I believe that the current points system/mutual obligation requirements are excessive.
However I do not believe that a person who is soley relying on government payments should be recieving further financial support to have a child.

It has now come to the stage where the girls and women (even some men) of Iran realise that things have to change!
They are realising that it's either they and their next generation continue living in this oppression with no hope, no freedom or no quality of life or they die trying to change things.
People are willingly laying their lives down to create change.
They would rather die than live like this.
I am praying for them.
Hopefully this revolution moves across the entire Middle East.

I am now getting to the stage where I think every Covid restriction MUST go and we need to move on. The exception is the mandatory 7 day isolation/Covid Payment when having Covid. The 7 day isolation period should have stayed.
We as the world have done all that we can, we did all the right things when there was no vaccine ie lockdowns, border closures, social distancing and mask wearing.
When vaccinations were available we did the right thing, strongly encouraged and even mandated vaccines, we still wore masks when cases were high, we still had restrictions, borders were still closed.
We are now at the stage where we are 4 doses in, borders are open and cases are falling.
People are fatigued and they want to move on. I get that.
Covid is here to stay. Covid is a nasty virus but so is meningicoccol, shingles, pertussis (whooping cough) and chicken pox.
South Korea are scrapping the mandatory pre departure testing this Saturday(people now don't have to show a negative result before bording a plane to South Korea). They still have to get tested upon arrival.
I work in pharmacy and we provide a service of supervising RATs. I can tell you right now, these people are over it. Some were telling me how they were not happy about getting tested then hopping on a plane for a 12 hour trip and doing it again when they arrive. Some were anxious about testing, all they wanted to do was go home.
The small island nations will be forced to follow suit very soon because they desperately need the tourism.
With the cost of living people are not wanting to spend $55-$75 for a test and will not travel to countries that require them.
I do think that mandatory testing should remain in place for aged care and visiting hospital patients.
At this stage of the pandemic all we can do is look after ourselves and our loved ones.
Exercise our own cautions. Wear a mask in crowded places, social distance if you can, keep updated with your vaccines and isolate when sick.

His refusal to resign speaks volumes about the sort of person he is.

This dangerous, power hungry control freak is not fit to serve in ANY Democracy. The Liberals need to expel him from their party and have a by-election in his seat. If they EVER want a small shred of respect from the Australian Public again that's what they will have to do....otherwise they are finished. What a amoral person Morrison is and what a disgrace the LNP are.

The reason why Morrison will NOT resign is because he has no where else to go and no one who will hire him.

No. You knew exactly who he was.

For four years, you witnessed him lead the most corrupt Government of a generation and you said nothing.

You knew when he was lying, you stood by his side and assured us he wasn't.

You forgave his absences, his careless words, and his pernicious white anting of his perceived enemies.

You cheered on his culture wars and championed his cheap politics.

You regurgitated his slogans, you echoed his personal attacks.

You concealed the rorts, the dodgy deals, and the jobs for the boys.

So no, do not clutch your pearls and tell us you had no idea who this man really was. You had four long years to show an ounce of moral conviction and not one of you did.

You rode on his coat tails, if he had won you'd be by his side once again gas lighting us for our concerns.

But now he is subdued and left impotent on the back bench you suddenly develop the spine to call him what he is?

Well WE put him on the back bench, us, the voters you failed to deceive. WE confronted him and won... because you never did.

May your legacy forever be tainted with his name.

Since mask mandates are not going to be enforced nor are they going to work, all the state governments need to give Work From Home orders.
This will reduce spread of Covid but still keep our economy open.

26/07/2022

I understand the ALP government have a lot to do and I acknowledge what they have done so far.😊
However with the current Covid cases around the country, I feel that this government is falling short. There are no mask mandates for indoor settings (I know this is a state issue but still.... )
Sure we all can wear a mask ourselves but a lot of people are not.
The hospitals are NOT coping, services are inconsistently running or not running, businesses are closing due to staff being sick. The list goes on.
If the government are so worried about the protests and riots from the freedom fighters resulring from mask mandates then essentially these people have won.
I think at the LEAST work from home orders need to comeback.
Just bring in the work from home orders to reduce the spread and help the hospitals.

I'm getting really fatigued by the mental health cop out regarding mask mandates.
So many people are sick. These are teachers, doctors, nurses, pharmacists, transport workers, truck drivers, police officers, hospitality staff, retail staff amongst many other workers, businesses owners and the vulnerable.
Services and businesses cannot operate to their full capacity.
This is a community crisis. This is impacting everyone.
Albo and the rest of the ALP are looking more and more like the LNP with their lax attitude.
They are scared of the wrath of Murdoch about enforcing mask mandates.
I know this post may 'offend' some people but Albo needs to step up.
If Albo and the rest of the ALP are afraid of Murdoch then Murdoch has already won.
The ALP are soon going the lose the faith, respect and votes from those who voted for them. They need to get the police force ready and pull in all the resources needed to enforce the necessary mandates.

We have reached peak ridiculous.

Just put on a mask and stop whinging.

I’m not sure if John Barilaro has his passport up to date.

Mind you - I’m not sure he’s going to need it.

I think it’s looking more and more unlikely that he’ll be going to New York.

Last Friday he was appointed as a Trade Commissioner to the USA.

It’s a NSW Government appointment.

And a week later - it’s looking more and more likely it won’t be happening.

There are too many damaging details.

And I’m staggered that the people in charge thought this would go unchecked.

They must have poor eyesight.

Because they should have seen this coming!

As we’ve told you - Mr Barilaro has been appointed to a plum position as Trade Commissioner to the US.

The job carries a salary of $450,000, plus a $100,000 allowance.

And business class flights.

However - the actions around his appointment have a certain ‘stink’ to them.

We now learn that the search to find the Trade Commissioner ended, just before John Barilaro resigned from Parliament.

On October 3 - Investment NSW advised a global recruiter - their services were no longer required.

An email from Investment NSW CEO Amy Brown says the role would now be an “internal matter” and decided by “ministerial appointment.”

According to the Guardian - the next day - Mr Barilaro announced his resignation.

This development creates two new questions for the State Government.

Firstly - someone is lying.

The Premier says:

“A recruitment process was undertaken by Investment NSW with a global recruiting company that made a recommendation.”

But you also have Investment NSW saying that at the last minute- it was a Ministerial appointment.

It doesn’t stack up.

We also learn that the Government had been extremely close to appointing the successful candidate 2 months before Barilaro’s resignation.

Internal emails from August 23 advised staff to prepare a press release to announce the New York trade position.

It was to be Treasury official Jenny West.

Jenny West had been informed by the former Premier Gladys Berejiklian she had the job.

It was later revoked - and Jenny West was given a private settlement.

She’s since left the public service.

The Trade Commissioner position was created by Mr Barilaro when he was Minister.

Other Commissioners had to be approved by cabinet.

But then the rules were changed before Mr Barilaro’s appointment.

There are now going to be two separate inquiries into the matter.

One by the Upper House.

Another by the Department of Premier and Cabinet.

Good luck.

There are landmines all over the place.

John Barilaro has got plenty of credentials.

But Jenny West had more qualifications for the role.

We’re not suggesting John Barilaro has done anything wrong here.

But the circumstances surrounding this appointment don’t pass the pub test.

It leads to a perception of favouritism.

And “jobs for mates.”

John Barilaro has been working recently with a property developer.

If I was him - I wouldn’t be resigning from that position just yet.

I don’t think he’ll be going to New York.
