love at frost site ❄️⛸️

Wild ice season is here and like larch season it’s usually not here for long! Here’s a carousel of some of my favourite photos from last Friday:

Would you hike 20 km to camp and wake up with this view?

You’re sleep deprived, your alarm is going off at 6 am, someone’s yelling at you because “you’re alarm went off ten times” (side note: it went off once), and you wake up to this view. There’s no clouds in the sky but you have the prettiest view of the moon and the sunlight rising on the mountains. In my opinion, there’s no better way to wake up than in the mountains.

Saturday was my birthday and I was lucky enough to spend it with my favourite people! I can’t think of any better way to celebrate than going for a hike, beers, and brunch with your girl gang! Same season, same hike, same rock. Last year vs this year.. which one do you prefer?

Do you ever repeat hikes? This hike is one of my favourite larch hikes in Alberta and I’ve done it the last two years. Hiked last year and backcountry camped this year. Only thing missing this year was Duke! Maybe this will be a new fall tradition.

and I have a hike we do every February and I can’t wait for that one!

Why do you travel and hike alone? Why don’t you wait until you have someone to go with?

These are questions I hear all the time. Life is short and we never know when our time will come to an end. If I waited for someone else to travel with me, I wouldn’t have had a water fight with elephants in Thailand, visited Hobbiton in New Zealand, sun bathed on Almalfi Coast, or hiked in Madeira.

So here’s your reminder that it’s okay to do things alone! Don’t wait to do things you want to do just because of fear or wondering what people will think of you. Educate yourself on safety and just do it! You will never feel more empowered or independent and in my opinion, there’s no better feeling.

Today I start my new job. Two days ago I got back from travelling solo with the dogs for the first time. Maya Angelou once said, “if you don’t like something, change it. out of one job and into another that is! My coworkers be hatin 😅 Todays the last day at my current job and I will be starting a one year temporary position once I get back from vacation! I’m excited for the change but also only have vacation on my mind so nerves have yet to kick in. When’s the last time you changed jobs or experienced a big change?

Started my larch hunt last week on Wednesday in Kananaskis with snow covered larches then spent 3 days at Lake O’ Hara in which one night was -5. Larch season is here my friends.. don’t blink or it will be goodbye larch season!

So apparently when my friend I went camping with and I just met, she asked me if I liked camping and I said, “I don’t think that’s my thing.” That was probably me 5+ years ago but now look at me… camping almost every weekend 😅 a full out granola. There is nothing quite like spending time with your girls. Of course when the girl gang wanted to plan a camping trip on a weekday, my immediate action was to book it off work even though I’m limited for vacation. My girl said it best yesterday… make time for your friends 🤍 friendships are not convenient. Your friends will be there for your best and worst and your ups and downs (or at least they should be or they are not a friend). I’m so grateful to have met this group of girls on this app. Although we haven’t known each other a long time, we instantly connected and have made time for each other since 🤍

Did you know there are red chairs placed throughout Canada’s National Parks? 18 chairs were originally placed in lesser known locations in 2011 but now the red chairs can be found in over 100 locations! I think I have found 4 hikes with these red chairs! Have you seen any of these iconic chairs?

I was once told, “you can be such a butterfly when you want to be.” Did I let this affect me longer than it should have? Yes but I also learned how to love myself and that I can fly on my own. So here’s a reminder that you are capable of anything despite what anyone has to say. A butterfly doesn’t need anyone to tell it how beautiful it is 💙

campers have s‘more fun 🔥

There’s just something about a fire, making s’mores, and sleeping/waking up in the outdoors that just fills my cup. Anyone else feel this way? I have another camping trip booked this weekend and I cannot wait! I’m also getting better at remembering all my gear 😅 and I find having a camping bin helpful! Am I walking on Mars or Madeira?

Vereda da Ponta de São de Lourenço was one of my favourite hikes on Madeira! It’s also known as the PR8 (PR stands for pequena rota which means small route)! The landscape was so unique and I definitely felt like I was walking on Mars at times 🤯

a few favourites from our first backcountry trip of the year 🏕️

What’s a first backcountry trip without a few fails? 😅

Fail #1: I packed the but didn’t realize there was no fuel left. Also forgot to pack bug spray 🤦🏻‍♀️

Fail #2: I ran out of propane for the 🤦🏻‍♀️ I was able to cook my dinner but no hot coffee in the morning for me 😭

Fail #3: Refer to fail #1 because Duke’s face swell up from mosquito bites, poor guy! He ended up being fine and didn’t seem to even notice. Also a good reminder to pack Benadryl!

Asides from the fails, we had the best time and can’t wait to get back out camping! What fails have you had when camping? Please make me feel better 😅

I 🫶🏻 Portugal

Portugal has been one of my favourite countries to visit! From the Algarve to Lisbon to Madeira, I loved it all. Here are some must do’s in Portugal:

🥾 Hike! Madeira was my absolute favourite for hikes and the landscape varies from peaks to forests to black sand beaches. The Algarve also has beautiful coastal hikes!

🥐 Eat all the pastries including their famous pastel de natas! I still dream about them 🤤

🚡 See the tram in Lisbon! I also loved the tile buildings in Portugal.

🏰 Visit Sintra which is popular for it’s Peña Palace! I highly suggest visiting first thing in the morning and booking tickets in advance.

🦀 Eat fresh seafood! Do I need to say more?

Don’t forget to stop and smell the roses 💐

I am that friend that will stop and take photos of flowers everywhere I go. I love flowers, especially roses! They are one of the flowers that reminds me of my grandma (her favourite was white roses)! I even have roses and wild roses tattooed in my sleeve which is dedicated to her along with hummingbirds and raspberries. What’s something that symbolizes fond memories for you?

Story time 📖 (buckle up!)

It’s my last night that I’m spending in my campervan in Portugal. After hiking 12 km in 30+ degrees and bonking my head on the door, I finally find a campsite to shower at before heading back to Lisbon in the morning. On the drive, I feel like I’m passing little ghost towns. I think, “I feel like I’m in a movie and driving to a cult.” It seems I have arrived but maps took me the wrong way and I’m lost. I call the campsite but lose connection. I’m able to find my way using maps and the guy who lost connection with me came to find me. I drive up and realize the campsite is gated. As the guy who came to find me walks up to my campervan, the gate opens and a man who appears to be a long-haired Nick Offerman walks out with only a towel (barely) covering him. The guy from the phone then asks me if I know this campsite is a nudist camp… and I respond, NOPE 😅 He tells me I can wear clothes inside but have to be n**e at the pool. To each their own but this was not for me especially as a solo female. I politely decline and then spend the next hour finding a campsite. I receive a text from my mom, “why does it look like you’re turning around?” I text her back, “long story, call you later.” 😂

So if you’re ever looking for a campsite make sure you read the entire description 😂 I’m going to blame this one on the heat and goose egg to my head..

Must do hike in Spain ✨🇪🇸 [ save for future planning ] 🥾 Caminito Del Rey is an aerial trail that hangs 100 meters above the gorge walls. The trail is fairly linear and 8 km one way. It was once the most dangerous hike in the world but was restored in 2015. 🎟️ You can purchase a general ticket or an official guided ticket (I did the guided as the general was already sold out). Tickets can sell out so make sure to plan and purchase ahead! A bus ticket will also be required to get back to the parking lot. ⛑️ Helmets are mandatory and yes you will get to look as cute as I did 😉 Would you hike an aerial trail or have you before?
