The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is cracking down on unfit players with a new selection policy. Going forward, only players meeting specific fitness standards will be considered for national selection. This policy is a response to the team's recent struggles, including their disappointing knock-out in the group stage of the ICC T20 World Cup. Former team director Mohammad Hafeez has blamed the team's previous management for neglecting fitness, leading to issues in both the World Cup and the Test series against Australia. Hafeez alleges Mickey Arthur, Grant Bradburn, and Babar Azam dismantled the system prioritizing fitness. In an interview, he said this neglect also impacted the team's performance in the Tests against Australia.
"When I asked the trainer why the players weren't fit enough, his surprising answer was that the previous management had instructed to leave fitness matters until the World Cup 2023 and let players play as they want. I followed their instructions," Hafeez said. He further added that due to this, Pakistan struggled in the final innings of the Test against Australia, with players appearing tired due to not achieving the desired fitness level.
There is a possibility of a training camp in Karachi for the Pakistan cricket team for the home series in July. Senior cricketers will train alongside the Shaheens, who are set to tour Australia. New red-ball coach Jason Gillespie will arrive in Pakistan next month to oversee the camp. Test captain Shaan Masood is currently playing county cricket in England and will return home before the season ends. Pakistan will play a two-Test series against Bangladesh in August, followed by a tour by England in October, and then the Green Shirts' tour of Australia in November.
Three ODIs and as many T20 matches are planned for the Bangladesh series, and a decision on Babar Azam's captaincy in limited-overs formats will be made in the coming days. Construction work is underway at Qaddafi Stadium in Lahore, and National Stadium Karachi and Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium may also be upgraded before the Champions Trophy scheduled for next year. Rawalpindi and Multan are potential venues for the home Test matches against Bangladesh, and the PCB will announce the final schedule and locations in the next few days.
