Ever feel like you're just behind the action? Like you're always just a few days behind, hunting last weekend's sign when the deer seem to have moved on? Or maybe you've fallen into the trap of following trail camera photos from this year and you're often too late to the party? Situations like these are why many hunters are beginning to rely more and more on historical data. Using historical data to tracks certain bucks' seasonal patterns or when certain areas seem to switch on every season has garnered a good bit of attention in the last few years. And there's one good reason for this: it works! But it only works if you gather, analyze, and track the right data in the right way and then ACT when the time is right.

In this episode of the Southern Way Hunting Podcast, Josh talks with Brandon Barlow about using historical data to hone in on big bucks! Brandon has lots of experience tracking specific bucks and specific areas and has been able to consistently capitalize on his intel when the time is right. In fact this season, he nearly called his shot and was able to take a public land stud in September.

In this episode, the guys discuss Brandon's overall approach to historical data, how he uses both SD and cell cameras, how mock scrapes play into his strategy, and how he times his hunts to make sure he's there when the buck he's after finally shows. This is a FANTASTIC episode for anyone looking to take their hunting strartegy to the next level. Enjoy!

In this episode of the Wisconsin Sportsman Podcast, Josh talks with Pierce Nelles about how he recently scored on a double bearded WI gobbler.

Pierce encountered a series of unfortunate events that led to him missing out on a few of the tags he was hoping to have for earlier in the turkey season. Needless to say, by the time Pierce's turkey season rolled around, he was chomping at the bit! After a couple of unsuccessful outings, Pierce made it happen on his first "real" turkey hunt of the year. And the bird was a beaut! 1"+ spurs, 21.5" of total beard length, and a beautiful fan to boot. The guys close out the conversation with a few lessons Pierce learned from this turkey!

Turkey hunters in the south are off to the races, chasing gobbling birds through the swamps and pines. Meanwhile, much of the rest of the country waits for the temps to finally warm and the last of the snow to melt, still a couple weeks away from thinking about turkey hunting. But what if there was a way for you to hunt turkeys RIGHT NOW, weeks before the season begins in your state?

In this episode of the Wisconsin Sportsman Podcast, Josh talks with Paul Campbell about extending your turkey season by heading south. Paul is a diehard turkey hunter from Ohio, and he's no stranger to traveling to turkey hunt. This year, he got his earliest start ever, and it resulted in him taking his very first Osceola Turkey. Give this one a listen as the guys discuss turkey hunting stories, tactics, and some tips for those hoping to extend their turkey season.

In this episode of the Wisconsin Sportsman Podcast, Josh talks with about turkey hunting, learning from the best, and filming your hunts.

Dylan is a Wisconsin native and long time hunter. Growing up primarily as a gun deer hunter, his passion pushed him to spend more time afield so he picked up a bow. That same passion has now led him to a career path where he has gotten the opportunity to film for and hunt with some of the best hunters in the country, including The Hunting Public and Woodhaven Custom Calls. In this episode, Dylan shares some of the biggest lessons he's learned from some of the greats, how his hunting style has changed over the years, and some tips for filming your own turkey hunts.

Buckle up! It's a good one!

There’s nothing quite like that first bird you call in by yourself.

This was my second turkey ever, and the first I called into gun range. I first saw him in an ag field the evening before and had a pretty good idea of where he was heading to roost. When packing in for the evening, I heard him gobble after flying up to roost on the other side of the 140 acre farm. After driving over for a closer listen, I was able to get one shock gobble out of him, then nothing. He was close and I was on a field, so I assumed he was in a small corner where he could see my vehicle in the road. Pin pointed.

The next morning, I went in from a different direction and heard him gobble as I walked a secluded edge of the field. Using a high spot in the field, keeping a single bushy tree between us, and crawling through the knee high grass kept me concealed. I crawled under the drooping branches of said bushy tree and had a small rise in the between us. I gave him a few soft yelps. He gobbled hard but sounded distant. I began to crawl further in the tall grass hoping to close the distance, but he gobbled again and sounded much closer. Must have turned my direction on the limb. I quickly retreated to the tree and stayed put.

I never heard him fly down, so when he gobbled on the ground it was quite a shock. Soon, I heard hens further down the field cackling as they flew down. When they started to yelp, I feared they would pull him away. So I threw everything I could at him. I yelped. I Jake yelped. I clucked and purred. I scratched in the grass. Anything to get him over the rise that was about 25 yards away. Then I saw the tips of his tail fan crest the hill. He strutted back and forth for what felt like hours. “Is this really going to happen?”

Moments later, the bronze tips of his tail feathers disappeared and a head peaked about a foot over the rise, and my aim was true.

Can’t wait to play the game again in a couple weeks!

Time to get boots on the ground!

The next two months are arguably the best time to get in some post-season scouting for whitetails. Antlers are dropping, snow is melting revealing even more sign from last fall, and the woods are as open as they'll be all year. These conditions create a real opportunity for whitetail hunters to maximize their time in the field. Couple these conditions with the fact that bumping deer this time of year will have no impact on your hunting next fall, and post-season scouting is a no brainer.

This week on the Wisconsin Sportsman Podcast, I talk with outdoor writer and Wisconsin native Paul Annear about post-season scouting for whitetails. Paul spends tons of time each winter scouting for deer and scooping up shed antlers, putting the pieces together for next year's fall game plan. In this episode, Paul shares a bit about his background, what makes scouting this time of year invaluable, how to read and weigh winter sign, and much more. This is one you don't want to miss!

🚨NEW EPISODE!!!🚨

While turkey hunters in many states ring their hands about the future of the wild turkey in their states, Wisconsin turkey hunters have a lot to be thankful for. Once extirpated from Wisconsin, the wild turkey is an incredible testament to the impact sound conservation practices and volunteer organizations like the National Wild Turkey Federation can have for the game animals we love. As a turkey hunter, it's important to understand where we are, where we cam from, and where we're going in the future if we want to pass down the pursuits we love so much to the next generation.

In this episode of the Wisconsin Sportsman Podcast, Josh talks with Taylor Finger, Wisconsin's Game Bird Ecologist, about wild turkey conservation in Wisconsin. The guys discuss the history of the wild turkey in Wisconsin, conservation efforts that have led to the restoration of the wild turkey in Wisconsin, and why Wisconsin is a premier turkey state. Enjoy!
