Mary Anning (Kate Winslet), a paleontologist who searches muddy beaches for fossils like the prehistoric creatures that give the Ammonites their name, lives in the windswept coastal town of Lyme Regis. They live with their mother (Gemma Jones) and run a tourist shop that sells tiny rocks to those who want a little sense of wonder.
